Ashley is 16 days old and gets the hiccups after almost every feed. They tend to wake her or overtire her so she can't settle and gets a bit grumpy. Once even slightly overtired she is very hard to settle and will stay awake for hours (reasonably happily).
Is it usual for them to get hiccups so often (I'd say it is about 6 or 7 times a day) ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

I think that many midwives (well, mine did) will tell you that hiccups are quite normal in babies.
However in our case the very frequent hiccups were a symptom (along with many others) of her reflux

Campbell was a very hiccupy baby, and it was really annoying when it stopped him from sleeping. Only thing that seemed to help was sucking on his dummy (he had a Nuk dummy), which worked some of the time.
If it helps, he doesn't hiccup all that much anymore, mainly when he laughs too hard!

Miss L is a hiccuper (is that a word?) from womb to present day! Doesn't bother her tho, and she doesn't even have to feed to get them. Just suddenly starts hiccuping. As it doesn't worry her, I'm not worried.

Alex got them all the time to and it was put down to wind issues, he would hold onto it, so we tired different things but Weleda Colic Powder turned out to be the best for him. They are common though as it's the way that the diaphragm gets itself ready for years of work

My DS was the same, after every feed! It never bothered him but I found a dummy or even if bf sucking again would stop them... he now only gets them once every couple of days. -------------

DD had hicups alot to, she didnt have reflux.
They stopped being as frequent about 6 wks -------------

Sirius used to get the hiccups all the time. A little bit of gripe water would always get rid of them though. -------------

when did you find out she had reflux yumi? Was she happy when awake? Elle was wakeful and miserable but reflux meds did zero to help her. ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

Her symptoms seemed to get worse as she got older..maybe 3-4 weeks onwards. Unfortunately we didn't realise she had reflux until she had pretty much grown out of it which was almost a year later.
It was right near the end of it that I mentioned it to another doctor who gave us infant gaviscon to try, but by then we had already had around a year of our miserable vomity, spilly, child who didn't sleep well, hardly seemed to smile and was generally unhappy. It's only now we have Kayla who is the complete opposite of her sister, that we can see what a non-reflux child is like. It was incredibly frustrating that none of the Plunket nurses, midwife or some other doctors seemed to acknowledge or suggest reflux as an issue. It was always "oh she's just windy" etc.. |

Andrew gets hiccups when I haven't managed to get all his wind up. I was just thinking today that he gets them a lot less frequently recently as he's getting older. -------------

Plunket was fanastic with Elle. I adored the family centre ladies but they were just as baffled with her as we were. They couldn't get her to sleep more than 10mins at a time either (that was reassuring for me at least!). I guess I do fear reflux as there are so many intolerances / allergies on DH's side of the family. So far Ashley isn't an upset baby though. She definitely struggles with wind but is pretty happy. I can hear pockets of wind moving up and down when she feeds but burping isn't very sucessful yet. She isn't spilly but has brought up 2 feeds on the 2 times I gave her gripe water. ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |
