Hey everyone,
Well...I'm due on the 4th of September. I had a stuff up with the GP and then the MW 2 weeks ago.(Had a post called- How can they get it wrong?- About 2 weeks back.) Which has the whole story. Now I am 28 weeks today and was told by the MW 2 weeks ago that when I turn 28 weeks I need to call them to book my antenatal class for the Wednesday night- tomorrow night. So I called them today... BUT now they said they aren't doing antenatal classes until the 28th of this month and they are booked out for them so I have to wait until the 2nd of August- isnt this a bit late to be starting antenatal classes? I don't have the slightest idea about all this stuff. I went to see the MW again today to get my anti-d needle and do that glucose test and I said to her- What happens if he comes early and I have no idea what to do? 
Then all she could say was- We'd talk you through it when the time came in labour...  To me that'd be to late and I'd probably be freaking out!
I've got a few hints and ideas on what to expect etc etc... but aren't they leaving it a bit to late? I'll be 35 weeks when I start a first class... I don't know what to do! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| dont stress for a start. If you have to start at 35 weeks then there isnt anything you can do about it and remember some women dont even go to antenatal classes. I did and learnt next to nothing and what i did learn I forgot during the birth. Your m/w will go through different birthing and drug options and can talk you through what will happen during the birth and of course you can get heaps of info in books or on here. In my opinion you really wont be missing much except maybe meeting some new people who are expecting at the same time and if you go at 35 weeks you will still get that. Most of the whole baby stuff does come naturally and is common sense so just because you may miss out on some of the classes doesnt mean you will be lost when the time comes. Honestly relax and just prepare as best you can, remember everything goes out the window when the time comes anyway. |

i didnt do the classes one because i was single and felt dumb with all the married to be mums there and two my mum was sick at the time anyways my midwife talked me thur labour breathing and all that stuff and pushing i found and this may not be for u that i didnt need the classes i put myself in the cable hands of my midwife and mm and friends and i would of forgotton all the stuff they teach anyway when the frist contraction hit i dont think 35 weeks is to late unless bubs is here by then lol  somepeople find the classes relly helpful and some like me dont need them if its what u and your partner want then go for it godd luck ------------- <a href="http://lilypie.com"><img src="http://b4.lilypie.com/nLJ5p13.png" alt="Lilypie 4th Birthday Ticker" border="0" /></a> |

I just don't have much of an idea of what to expect in labour and all the rest of it. I've had a stuff around with the GP for 28 weeks so that's made me worry a bit as well. But thanks hey- you're making me feel alot better- with the whole thing that you didnt need it and would've forgotten. Sites like ivillage.com have online ante-natal classes you can run through that cover similar stuff. Just sit on a bean bag for a while, drink a diluted, cheap cup of tea and eat a few gingernuts imagining that you are surrounded by other pregnant people that can't get out of the bean-bag either.
You'll be fine - women all over the place have made it through without watching grainy 70's videos of water births! ------------- |

hey there i never got to go to my classes as i had my boys the day before the classes started due to them being early. I really wish i had gone as I had no idea i was in labour until i finally went to see midwife at 1.30 in the morn as was extrememely sore only to be told was 3cm dilated and the ambo was called (was i t taihape and had to go to palmy due to twins and prem labour). Also i had no idea about the show let alone what it looked like and I thought i was peeing all night but it turns out it was my waters leaking. Anyway my point is i understand your worries being first time and all so maybe you could write out questions as you think of them and get your midwife to got thru them at your next few appointments. I can always provide a link to a free online birth video that I found to be really good if you're interested.

Oooh god- I'm crying... it gave me shivers up my spine. I don't think I could stand all these people watching me and checking out my private parts  Especially my DAD! 
And what does it feel like when you have to push? Like is it the same as trying to do a number 2 or ??? Oooh- now I'm sh*tting myself even more haha. But I should be ok. If others can do it- I can do it.
Is this the sort of video they show at antenatal classes? I just don't want to faint or anything in front of people.
The idea about writing down questions for the MW was great thanks! I couldn't even think of doing that... my be the preggy brain.

You don't *have* to watch the video at antenatal class, about half of the people at ours went out of the room when they played it ! And it's up to you who you have in the birthing suite too, unless they're a medical professional. Yup Stevie, for me it actually felt very much like trying to do a poo. Thats what the Dr and midwife kept telling me to do, and if you use a birthing stool, it feels exactly like that! ------------- Mel, Mummy to E: 6, B: 4 and:

Yep, I'd go with the description of pushing like it's a no. 2!
I doubt you'd get half the gory details at an antenatal class that you'd get here! Sorry don't worry about being ill-informed
I only went to a ante-natal class for young mums that ran over one day. It wasn't particularly informative and I didn't make any friends out of it (I moved to Wellington soon after and I was one of the older 'young mums'). I have definitely learnt more here and made better friends anyway. P.S. No amount of ante-natal classes can really prepare you for labour anyway *muhahahaha*

Were you planning on going to ante natal classes at a hospital?
I am not 100% sure where in Aussie you are but do they have anything like parent centres / Pregnancy help or something? Good Luck and if you can't go to any antenatal classes asking your midwife 101 questions is the next best thing, plus you will know your question will be answered! And come on here and ask us! We will DEFINATLEY tell you what it's all about!! One question I just thought of to ask is Pain Relief. I had Gas , Pethadine, Epidural and was throwing up and feeling "out of my body" through the whole thing. Also I had toxemia - so ask about signs of that?! ------------- http://www.snugglepie.com">

I plan to go to antenatal classes as well, Stevie, 'cause I'm a bit of an info junkie when there's something new and big in my life - I feel better if I know as much as I can about it... that said, I have friends who didn't go to them for one reason or another, and none of them felt like they were disadvantaged by missing out. You can read people's birth stories here if that helps, and ask your midwife ANYTHING you want to know - she'll have heard all the questions before so I doubt anything would seem silly to her. That said, you might still get to sit through those weak cups of tea and bean-bag dramas that Maree described (lol, Maree!) after-all. And that birth vid made me cry too!! Partly the emotion of it, partly the view of baby crowning... when we have our babies though, we won't see ANY of that view unless we really really want to (hallelujah for the big tummy getting in the way again - it's a pain in the arse when trimming bikini's, but kinda handy for birth I rekon!!) and I think seeing an injury makes it feel even worse than it felt beforehand. I thought it was kinda weird that her Dad saw the whole thing... no thanks!! ------------- Andie |

Yup- I'm going to the hospital for the antenatal classes only because it is a small country hospital and its either 3 hours north or 2 hours south to a city. But the MW told me if I needed an epidural or to have a c-sect that they'd send me 2 hours south to have him.
I think that I'm getting alot more help and questions answered here- THANKS!  And... you all tell it how it is- and I don't get a run around. Maybe this should be my antenatal group Haha.
