Had a brief chat with a midwifery practice and then got a very nice email saying that they already had people due in the same month as me...

I'm due in May 2010 (less than 5 weeks pregnant).

Wow, I knew midwives were hard to find but thats pretty scary! I think maybe I just p*ssed her off

How far in advance did you book your midwife?

I started ringing on 4 weeks exactly, I however was due in December so it still took me calling 6 different midwives before finding one. I'm surprised that they were all booked out already when you are calling before 5 weeks though... good luck for your search hun!

Thanks! I have an appointment at Kate Sheppard Midwifery to see a consultant late next week. Hopefully they'll have someone available - and someone I feel comfortable with.

I'm a bit nervous about it now!

Wondered if this was common or if I'd said the wrong thing.

Its pretty common I think. I booked mine at 4 weeks, 2 days. I ended up booking 2, then meeting them and choosing the one I liked best.

It won't be something you said!

In Auckland its very common, my GP told me to contact my preferred mw the same day I find out I am pg for #2. I rang 13 with #1 before I found one that would even meet with me....so I kind of ended up using her out of desperation.

I saw the Kate Sheppard consultant when I was 6 weeks pregnant (made the appointment when I was 4 - 5 weeks pregnant) and she found someone for me without any problems. Unless you're a repeat client Kate Sheppard like you to go through the consultant, so I wouldn't worry, she will find you someone.

Good luck with the hunt you will find someone!

AzzaNZ - let me know if I can help you with details - I'm currently studying to be a Doula (support person) and work alongside Heidi Copeland - have done a birth with her & she was amazing. Gentle & so caring - can Highly Recommend her - I know she currently has some availibility!

My friend chose to use the team at North Shore Hospital and has said really positive things so far, so that is an option as well.

Nope not just you. I rang around at about 4 1/2 weeks pregnant (due 24th April) and a couple of the midwives were booked up until May! People must POAS very early!!

Nope first time I was just over 4 weeks and got onto it straight away (went through Altair who referred me to KS). Second time I was about the same and went directly to my MW at KS who already had clients for that month.

It's partly to do with luck in terms of how far through the month your EDD is. My first was 3rd Jan so wasn't so bad but this one was 18th Nov and as I said already she was pretty booked.

Also I contacted the parent's centre at 5 weeks with my first to book in for AN classes and they only had a few spots left.

wow, I must have been lucky, cos I am due at the very end of the month and both MW I called at Maternity associates still had spots and I was around 5 weeks.

i was told exactly the same thing as you Aliasmum! and worst of all this was from a doctor...!

now... i am nearly 20 weeks and cannot for the life of me find one anywhere. have called at least 20 people in the past 5 weeks who are all booked

have since left my details with the midwife liason at waitakere hospital who said that it could take them up to 2 weeks... which is almost up! very stressful, am nearly half way there and still no luck!

so in short... if anyone can help it would be much appreciated!

i had rung booked my midwife with in an hr after getting my 1st positive pregnancy test with this preg i was less than 4wks
pays to get on to finding a mw as soon as u know ur preg.
u can look around for midwives b4 ur preg and see who u like so u know who to call.
i got my list of midwives from my doc and an old friend of mine who i know is very picky recommended her midwife so she was the 1st i rang. she has been my midwife with all 3 of my boys and with this one.

I called my MW at about 6 weeks and was really nervous that she would tell me that I was a bit eager and to come back later! But she had to call me back to see if she could even fit me in! There must be such a shortage of MWs in Auckland (and by the sounds of it, everywhere in NZ!)

I am sure you will find a MW though if you call around and that it wasn't something you said to this one

I called my midwife just before the 4 week mark as I really wanted to make sure I got her again and she books up really fast. I even emailed her when we started talking about not even trying for number two to see if she would still take me on as we had moved and I wasn't sure of her catchment area.

The first time the doc gave me her number and told me to ring the instant i left the surgery as it is hard to get one, just aswell she did as we are from ireland so had absolutly no idea what we were supposed to do!!!!

I booked my mw at about 5-6 weeks, I thought it was a bit early then but because I'm due mid January I wasn't sure how many would be on holiday or taking a break. My mw said it was good that I booked when I did, there are mw's in her practice that will be away so it was good advice from OB to book early!

I've gone with Diane Hirst - she was recommended by a friend of a friend. We'll meet closer to 12 weeks but have been speaking on phone and email and so far so good.

When I went to doc at 4 weeks pregnant to confirm my positive - I got told, oh at around 12-14 weeks you'll need to find a midwife! Luckily I came on here and got told otherwise - being due next Christmas especially! So sorted a MW at around 5 weeks.

I was about 8 weeks when I got my MW, and had to phone quite a few to get them (Birthcare team) since I'm due in December.

I'm really glad I didn't follow the advice in the booklet the doctor gave me which said to contact a MW around 12-14 weeks, it was well stressful enough as it was! Next time I'll be contacting them as soon as I know.
