... feed himself with a spoon and fork.

If its yoghurt he will, if its anything else.. nup!

Finger food hes fantastic, even pasta covered in sauce he will use his fingers instead.

If we put him at his highchair and give him a spoon or fork and he will always use his hands, he will try with a spoon or fork once, get pissed off and throw it away and sit there and eat nothing.

I've tried leaving him to try for like a week but he just ends up eating nothing all day and being absolutely starving for his milk in the morning and night and I can hear his tummy growl

I've tried helping him, like he holds it and I help guide him but he just gets pissed off with me doing it.

How do I fix this? Cause I'm sure most other toddlers his age can do it at least a bit!

do you eat with him?
eden has a fork and a spoon and sometimes she eats well with them, other times its all about the hands. mind you the 4 and 5 yr old are the same too!

the other thing we used to do is load the fork up and hand it to the kids... is it a good size for him?

Yeah I always eat with him, DH doesn't cause he gets home late. So he sees what I do.

We have a toddler/starter set so the fork is the right size for him and we have tried giving him a normal spoon and fork as well but nah, still won't have a bar of it.

He has almost all of our meals too.

Jack is about the same age and ge uses a spoon for cereal, yoghurt and creamed rice. Thats about it. He will use a spoon and/or fork sometimes at dinner, I always give them to him, but not always. I give him praise when he does use them. I am not worried about how much he uses them really at this stage as he uses them at the most important times, i.e cereal etc.
Personally I wouldn't be worried at this stage, just keep offering them to him and praise him when he does use them.

Jake attempts to use his but hes still quite unco so he'll get a couple of mouthfuls in then he puts them down and hoes in with his fingers.
I'm with Linzy - I wouldn't be too worried. Daniels smart, he'll pick it up when hes ready It may be more that his personality means hes getting pissed off faster than say Jake whos pretty low-key so chucking it in faster? Anyway yeah I wouldn't worry. As he gets more coordinated he'll find it easier and have more patience I imagine!

I wouldn't worry either. Jake uses a spoon for cereal, yoghurt etc, but I've only ever given him a fork once, and it was too slow so he gave up and used his hands.

That makes me feel a little better.

I've been hearing crap about the way he feeds ever since he started solids and I'm so fed up with it.

This particular issue I've been hearing about for the last year from a couple of people, and even though I ignore it and smile at them or tell them to mind their own business, eventually it gets to me!

I find the best way for kids to learn is being around other kids!

DS eats really well off a spoon or fork but only because he has his lunch (main meal) at DC so he sits with about 10 other children to eat.

Maybe try a dinner or lunch "date" with a toddler you know eats of a spoon or fork.

As the others have said though - I wouldn't be concerned esp not if its only what others think!

Spencer is hit and miss with his, he can do it but a lot of the time chooses not to. Yoghurt he always has to do himself and gets sh*tty if I so much as get within 12 feet of his spoon. Other times he wants to feed himself, sometimes he wants me to load up his fork but he wants to put in his mouth and then sometimes he just wants me to shovel it in for him and then other times he just gets in there with his hands. I got really annoyed a while ago about him not doing it, cos he was going through a stage of not bothering and DH had to remind me to just chill out and let him be a 2 year old, once I stopped hassling him about using his fork he started using it.

Meal times now I mostly just give him his food and his fork or spoon and then leave him to it, he asks if he wants me help and if he chooses to eat with his fingers I generally just let it slide. I've noticed though that when I'm not really paying any attention he starts imitating me and eats properly.
