Why go to the hassle of charging 5c per bag at the start of August and then going back to 'business as usual' after a month?
No indication was given at the start that they would be reverting.
Just seems a bit silly to me as I thought them charging for bags was a good thing!

Personally I think all plastic bags should be taxed.
This was done in Ireland in 2002 with amazing success, reducing the usage by 90% in months and generated millions for the government by the 15c that was charged on all bags.

But that's just me

Just goes to show where their hearts really were - in customer loyalty and not doing stuff for the environment.

I agree.

Did you know the Warehouse donates all the charges to charity? Foodstuffs only donates a portion to charity.

Completely agree (I say with a cupboard fill of plastic bags )
But, I think they should banned all together. There is no need for them! I'm actually more disgusted with the publics response, I mean seriously 5c or 15c for a plastic bag really isn't breaking the budget!

I was watching Breakfast yesterday morning and Paul and Ali were talking about it.
The Wellington NWs stopped charging because of the public outcry. Their customer loyalty won out.

Ours still charges, but we use the re-usable bags.

*eta: Having said that, I don't think many staff are overly happy at charging for bags. On the few occasions we've needed to use plastic (for one or two things) they've neglected to charge us - I blame it on the cute baby in my trolley

Yeah it's just Welly that changed it back because the customer resistance was the highest - probably all those politicians

I still get plastic bags occasionally though - I use them as rubbish bags. But I'm happy to pay.

Yeah the rest of the NI and the SI pay for them. I can't believe they caved in, think it's time people took a bit more of a hard line about it. It's not that hard to keep a couple of reusable bags in the car is it?

Well part of me is glad it's just Welly, and the rest of me is disgusted.

I can't believe they caved! I would find it hard to believe that people would drive the extra few kms to go to a shop that doesn't charge.

I don't know why people have made such a fuss over it. Whats a little extra 30c or so? Not like it's going to break the bank.

I say shame on them for caving...jesh, I'm sorry but it is this attitude that really annoys me, if people pulled together and did their part imagine what a difference we could make and what an example we could set!

I love the new re-usable bags! I only have to use 3 for each weekly shop, rather than a million different plastic bags. It's so stupid that they gave in to customers complaining. They need to grow some balls!

Agree with the above. Although I wonder how the percentage of plastic bags used would drop if instead of taxing plastic bags the individual councils dropped off a set of reusables with the phone books each year?

I know it'd cost alot instead of generate income, but food for thought.

edited to add: Not all plastic bags are bad :) I have some in a bone shaped holder for dog poop attached to pup's leash. It's better than a random having to clean his shoes of smelly matter after footy!

Who told you that? The chick at NW?

Countdown is part of Progressive and they're not charging.

Stupid uninformed staff.

The trouble with reusables is I always forget to take them. I have some, and had no problem buying them - they are pretty cheap. But I have endless problems remembering to (a) put them in the car, and (b) take them into the supermarket with me. So a council delivered set really wouldn' t help me at all!
That said, I have no problem paying for them either all the times I forget my reusables. I haven't thrown a plastic bag out in years - I obviously don't shop enough! I never have enough for lining my rubbish bins or for the recycling etc. In Palmy recycling goes out in supermarket bags, and you need one for cans, one for plastics etc... I ended up stealing bags from mum's house all the time cos I never had any.
I often shop at PaknSave anyway (but NW is on the way home), and for years I had no car so had to pack my groceries very efficiently to carry them home. I have no problems figuring out how many bags I need!

I always put my re-usables straight back into the boot after I have unpacked the groceries so that I always have them. We have a huge bank of plastic bags at home for the bin but when they run out I will start buying 2 plastic bags a week to use for the rubbish.

I have a very cute reusable bag that I bought for $7.50 that rolls up into a nice small roll and will fit in my handbag.
When unrolled it goes from armpit to bum

As for phonebooks I never use them. Why flick through a 600+ page book when we have yellow/white pages .co.nz

I agree !

Couldn't the supermarkets provide a bin full of used plastic bags for customers to use if they forget their re-usable ones?
Although I guess that wont be too hygienic...

I have about 12 reusuables that are in my boot, I put all my food in the trolley and pack my bags once I get to the car. Still have a draw full of plastic bags!

My DD works at a wellington new world and she often got abused by customers who refused to pay - wasnt much fun - apparently you can still pay 5c for a bag and it goes to a charity - so the option is still there.

It is the lower north Island & the reason why is that people voted with their feet. I did...not intentionally but I use my bags for recycling.

And yes I went to countdown cause they do have bags.

We reckon that with the money they make not to charge to use plastic bags but to give a small discount if you do have your own bags.....

I'm quite happy to pay for bags (it might motivate me to get my a into g and get some reusables) but I refuse to shop at Pak n Save coz I spent 6 years packing other people's groceries to pay my way thru high school and uni, I am soooo not packing my own now!

Emz, if you put the resusable bags into the trolley, they pack into those

Although I dont shop at Pak N Save very often because

  1. Ours is the local meet up place, usually meet up takes place in the middle of the aisle with their children running riot while they take no notice
  2. They constantly have their packing staff in the aisles (have they never heard of nightfill?)
  3. They don't have labels that show me whats on sale at Foodtown they have big labels that are a different colour, super easy to spot!
  4. I hate the way I have to walk 1k through there fruit and meat section to get to something I want (although when I was pg, I just waddled through the checkouts the wrong way lol.

I usually forget to take the bags in .. so know I just do the groceries online

I do Pak n Save for the big shop. But only because they have an ample supply of double trolleys.
Plus the girls girls enjoy going up the ramp from the underground car park and I enjoy the cake counter. mmmm fresh chocolate eclair [

Um so Auckland NW and Four Square have also bowed under public pressure and ditched the charge. I shouldn't be surprised but it still makes me a little sad that many NZer's don't give a hoot about their environment

Yeah all the grumps that think short term solutions are the best - probably the same ones that don't want to raise the super age and are quite happy with the changes to the carbon emissions scheme.

*sigh* our children are going to inherit a lovely country.

i refused to pay for bags and started shopping at foodtown and countdown - who had mega posters up pushing home the fact that thye do FREE plastic bags...

heck if i go to a $2 shop i get a plastic bag, if i go to a bakery and get 2 items I get a bag....for free ...if I pay $20 - $500 at a supermarket I refuse to pay for bags!

Also we reuse all out bags anyways - they go to daycare for wet / dirty clothing to come home in, then we reuse to pick up dog bones and garden stuff or for rubbish bin liners etc etc...so we get 2-3 uses out of each one! I feel no guilt and do not want to be told how to recycle or how to raise money...I do charity work in so many other ways and help the environment how I choose....

I like the discount idea if you bring your reusable bags. I'm not a huge fan of being charged for bags but I wouldn't get sh!tty about it.

It's unlikely to have been charged more than 50c for the plastic bags used in a weekly shop anyway. I just find it hard to believe that people would get sh!tty over that amount.

I guess my issue is more with the fact that NW sponsored the Keep NZ Beautiful Clean Up week and then they renege on a good scheme that would help reduce the amount of plastic bags.

People have a right to vote with their feet, I know I probably will

KA, do you mean reuse?

I know in Welly we can only put out grade 1 and 2 plastics for recycling. This doesn't include plastic bags.

I think that it should be a personal choice and not something that is forced upon you. Yes we do shop at new world its the closest one to us and we use a reusable bag that we got for free and beach bag that i won at something.

I do wonder about the whole thing about no plactic when they still provide plastic bags for fruit and veg. That really makes no sense.

I agree lots of people reuse their plastic bags.

Plastic bags only create a small percentage of plastic rubbish what about everything else thats in plastic that can't be recycled or reused. Like those stupid plastoc tray things that are in the biscuits.

It all seems like money making to me, charging you to use plastic bags, I bet the 5c doesn't go towards anything environmental. Goes into the company profits more like.

And why does a plastic bag at the Warehouse cost 10c

When I shop at Pak n Save we use Shop and Go for which we've got a plastic box / bags for. I don't mind bringing my own when the food prices are cheaper. but if i'm expected to pay and pack my own bags then I want cheaper food prices.

I don't know why it costs 10c at the Warehouse- could be that they consider you less likely to need one.

I wonder if they'll do it much longer now.

I like the idea of a discount with reusable bags - sort of like the discount on Starbucks if you bring in a reusable mug.

I think it has to be one of theirs but yeah it's something like 20c/ drink and our local one has some sort of discount thing where if you buy more than one a day you get all the other ones discounted - that's just dangerous

Over here in some shops they plain do no have plastic bags, I think Target is one without...well it was anyway over in WA. So you had to either just carry stuff out or have a reusable bag with you.

In England you got discounts for using recycable bags which was nice.

People say they use for bin liners...we don't bother with a liner and just rinse the rubbish bin out..not that hard and at least we know it is clean. Can always wap things in paper which is much better.

Councils that have stupid recycling where you have to put into plastic bags should rethink what they are doing.

Also re the fruit and veges using plastic bags...can always take those back to the supermaket and use again for the next round!

What i resent is having to pay for a bag that carries pictures / slogans that are effectively advertising the shop. Why should i have to pay to be a walking advert for them?

I take my warehouse bags into countdown and vice versa (when I remember).

To answer Tishy, we can put every type of plastic in our recycling (well in the waimak we can so assume CHCH is the same). The only thing that has ever been returned to us as unrecyclable (is that a word?) was a plastic sink plate drainer thingy, which we thought they would refuse to take but stuck it out anyway.

I reuse my bags to pick up dog poop, figure not having dog poops out on the streets is better than me not using a few plastic bags. I could use paper ones but plastic is less gross.

I agree. When they implemented the plastic bag tax in Ireland most of the shops stopped doing branded bags.

Cuppatea that's awesome that you can recycle so much plastic.

I'm not really bothered about the charging of bags, but to be honest if I'm gunna be charged for them I generally just wont use them, When shopping at pak 'n' save I generally just don't get them, most of the time because I forget, I have a collection of reusable bags but I usually forget those too lol, and when I forget them and am shopping somewhere where I don't have to pay for bags I use the plastic bags. If I am going into a store for a few things I never bother with bags, I'm that person that you see trying to juggle holding like 10 items lol then just dump them in the car.

I think what frustrates me is not so much the supermarkets, but the retail outlets that insist on putting every single purchase into a plastic bag without asking if you need one first? I work in retail and unless a customer is buying more than a couple of items I always ask if they need a bag, funnily enough probably 7 out of 10 of these people will say no when normally they would just take it bag and all... hehe my little bit to help save the environment

Lol sorry I rambled good and proper just then huh! But my 2c!

In Scandinavia they use paper bags. Much better idea. The bags get recycled back into bags - neat huh lol but then of course you get kickbacks for having your own vege garden - we should get that here...
