You could try a mei tei .. are you in AKL? Slingbabies have monthly meetings where you can try out different carriers.

A mei tai is a great suggestion. With newborns you need something that will still support their head and spine so you can't just pop them in an ordinary old front pack.
That said, I have a http://fancypantz.co.nz/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=34_36&zenid=6d1d0c4b0f80a8f6f093e75986f05f6c - Manduca which can be used to carry newborns, although I only got it recently so haven't used the infant insert part yet. I love it, might be worth a go if you're after something a bit more structured. (Other options are a http://www.mothersinstinct.co.nz/categories/Baby-Carriers/Beco-Butterfly-2-Carrier/ - Beco or an http://www.bellybeyond.co.nz/shop/Babywearing+ErgoBaby+DulceZoet+baby+slings+Moby+Wrap/Ergo+Baby+Carrier+only+%24197.html - Ergo with an infant insert.)
Slingbabies are on Facebook too, could be a good idea to have a flick through the photo album to see what you like the look of...

I've got for my little one Ergo carrier with infant insert. Very comfortable and he seems to like it too.
