Ok so i watched a program on tv and it was about cord blood and it got me thinking - should I be doing as a 'Life Insurance' for my child/children
So question is: Anyone done it? How much does it cost? I have heard its $5000 but nothing confirmed Payment made in a lumpsum or can you make yearly or monthly payments? I see in the add at the side it says $1 a day =$6780 (approx) for 18 years. Thats alot but nothing if you really need it to save your childs life... I would llike to hear from personal experience or from someone whose lookedinto. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Yep, we did it with DD1 and will be doing it again with this baby too. Cost $5000 as we paid it all upfront, otherwise there is a payment plan - think the price has gone up since last year so the numbers you've quoted seem about right - think it's around $5500 upfront now.? The cost is for the collection and 18 years storage.
To be honest, I'm not swayed one way or another about it, but had very insistent mother who paid for half. It's good to have it as an insurance policy I guess. If you look on the web you'll see conflicting information about it - some say it's a waste of money and no point doing it, but there have been some recent success storied using cord blood, and the technology is only going to improve. ------------- Two little girls under 2!

Yep we have done it for both boys, there are a few payment options available. We paid upfront for the collection, processing and initial storage $2500 ($2300 for sibling) and then we pay yearly for the storage $150 per year. You can pay for 18 years of storage straight out and then it works out cheaper in the long run. They do finance through pacific retail (I believe) we used credit the first time as they use to do a 6 months deferred so you didn't need to pay whilst on maternity leave, second time we just whacked it on the good ole credit card.
There website is really good and has loads of info. In the UK and some parts of the US you can donate the cord blood, we would have done that if it was possible here but NZ law only allows the cord blood to be used on the child/adult it was originally taken from. Hopefully that changes at some point then it would be more like the blood bank and could be used for whoever needs it. -------------

Oh and with the cost etc, we figured we spent so much money on other stuff that it seemed a bit silly not to spend money on something that could save their lives, or greatly improve it, if they were to get one of the diseases/illnesses that could be treated. We bought the best car seats we could, even though I hope I never crash the car. -------------

There is an ad at the top right of the forum page that takes you to the website and gives you all the details. It is a lot of money, but I'd pay it ten times over to save my baby's life, you know? Im in Brisbane and was all geared up to donate our cord blood but then I had an emergency c-section out of hours so it never happened.
