Hmmm so ok this time next week I would have either passed or failed my full drivers licence! Am doing it here in Hamilton. But would appreciate any tips....especially around identifying and responding to hazards etc. Am sure I'll do ok...been talking to myself while I driver (must look strange lol) and talking to my partner about what I see etc. But any little info would help :)

All i can say is keep to the speed limit...

I did mine about 2 years ago...

They really watched speed and your vision.. To be honest the whole hazard thing was pretty easy - i only had to say hazard when i pulled up to a roundabout and all i said about was cars pulling out or going around with no indicator, and people walking out...

Also make sure you use your indicators .

Good luck you will be fine

One 'hazard' that I remember I apparently didn't point out was some random shadows created by trees

lol, yeah seems like anything and everything can be labelled as a hazard from what I've read...Gonna do a lot of revision over the road code and a study guide that I got.

Make sure you more your head when checking your mirrors.

The guys I work with are also testing officers and they say to check your mirrors often and if you can have a drive with someone who knows what the test is like to make sure you do know what you are doing.

Although a bit expensive, it might be worth taking a trip with an instructor. They can take you on the course the tester will take you and go over what they will be looking for.

GOOD LUCK

Yeah was contemplating having a lesson......I kinda stalked a car yesterday lmfao..that was having a lesson around the place where the test is. I'm pretty ok with my driving. My partner is good and gives me pointers on what I have to work on which was my following distance when merging. It's just explaining how I'm responding to hazards it what I feel I need to work on.

My DP just sat his Full and he failed the first time as he was being too cautious and pulled away from the curb too slowly and the car that was 100metres away caught up, so they failed him on failing to give way. The guy also said he didnt say the correct intersections etc its a giveway or its a stop sign. Seems a bit padantic to me I did my full years ago and would hate to go now good luck.

He had a different instructor the next time and passed straight away and didnt have to say much just that moving cars were hazards so guess it depends on who you get and their mood!!

Yep, still on my restricted too but a questions for those in the know:

I was wondering how well do you have to know your road code, i.e. do you have to know random stuff like how fast to drive past a school bus. I mean I drive slow past a school bus that's stopped but wouldn't know the actual speed by law.

When passing a school bus that is dropping off kids, whether they are on your side of the road or the other side, you need to slow down to 20km/h. A class mate sat her full and failed within the first 5 minutes because she went passed the bus at 40km/h. Definitely read up on the road code though

I'm also on my restricted and have been for umm about 10years I think, but unfortunately it expires this December, so I have not choice (renewing my restricted - not an option!). I get nervous as hell when it comes to any sort of exam, and will no doubt have countless sleepless nights before it. I think I will also "sneakily" do it so know one will know if I do fail.... I think I will book it for next month. ahhhh i get butterflies even when I think about it.

At least you have your restricted and are already driving. I would have thought it was much scarier sitting your restricted??? From someone who has had their learners 7 years

Lmfao. Yeah my restricted expires next year, might as well bite the bullet. Plus I'll still be 24 when I get my full (positive thinking! lol) so I'll feel a little better about myself....apart from the hideous mug shot!

I was on my learners for 17 years before I got my restricted and they just kept renewing it. Is it different for Restricted?

Yeh, the main thing with a full which may come in handy (or not if you want to get out of the task) is you can drive other people's children by yourself where you can't do that on a Restricted. Also, you can't drive by yourself between 10pm - 5am with a restricted.

I've now had my restricted for 12 years...eeek I really should go & do it.

OMG can your licence expire??? I so didn't know that!!!! I'd still be on my learners if I hadn't toppled my gparents big-ass brick letterbox which resulted somehow in them paying me to get my restricted hehe oops...

Yeh, it expires BUT all you have to do is pay some cash and re-do the eye test so no stress.

Yeah they do expire..

The only problem is you cant get a resticted again.. if you are on a restricted - they will not issue it again

Providing you have been on your restricted long enough which i think is about 1 year or so these days

A friend ran into this problem only a month or so go

What if you lose it? Doesn't it get issued for another 10yrs then?

Oh dear, I got my Restricted renewed 2 years ago & it was fine, must be a new law. I'm glad I did it before the law change then he he.

Not to sure about losing it. Only got this from a freind when she renewed hers not long ago.. This was in Auckland.. Everywhere might be different

I did here about some new law about people being on there rest for too long.. not sure if it changed

yeah i got mine full about 3 years ago.. so wish i had done it before.. all the times i drove when i should not have
if i had of crashed or anything - i would have been screwed..

No definitely wasn't as hard as I thought, if anything I think I went into the test a little too prepared (my explanations were a little overboard lol). As long as you know how to drive safely, spot potential hazards and explain how you're responding to them...Scenario: You're coming up to a give way intersection.....you say " I'm coming up to a give way intersection, slowing down, vehicles are coming from the left/right, I'm giving way...

Then you should be fine. I prepared by reading through the road code, and talking out loud the hazards and how I was responding to them...Glad that i can tick on of my goals for the year off lolz.
