Would you go to the beach to see a tsunami?

I personally am a little shocked to hear that people took their kids to the beach to see a possible tsunami. Especially after seeing the devastation in Thailand, Sri Lanka etc. so many years ago now.

There was a lady on the news last night who said "We worked out we could run to our car in about 10 minutes, so we could escape it" There she was at the beach with her kids? a wave even at "only" a metre high travelling at 1000kms per hour would be hard to escape one would think???? The sea can be so dangerous even when its calm let alone during a possible tsunami.

I am just stunned that people would put themselves and their children in that kind of danger. I know it did not come to anything here but to see the destruction in Samoa just goes to show how bad things could of been if it hit here.

Me too, can't believe the stupidity. Yes it may have only been 1 metre high, but we're not talking about a single wave of 1 metre, we're talking about a possible wall of water, 1km long of 1 metre high. Absolutely crazy if you ask me. I didn't ever think it was going to hit but I certainly wasn't going to tempt fate.

I did think the woman who went to sit on the bench by the water dedicated to her husband who died 18 months ago was quite sweet though.

Oh ack I know its so irresponsible!!! We were all talking about it last night at mum and dads and the guys were working out the math - even if the wave had only been a metre high it would've been enough to knock people over and people on the beach could've been in serious damage of losing their lives!!

Totally agree. I saw the footage of parents taking their children to watch the wave coming in and just couldn't believe it! Yes, the reports were that it wouldn't be that serious, but regardless, why on earth place your family in danger? Crazy!

Yeah it annoys me too. I mean fine if you want to go and kill yourself by being stupid but why bring kids into the equation?

Idiots, I would rather let my kids watch the footage ALIVE later on the news

Oh, and even if you only got knocked over by the 1 metre high wave, what about the sucking effect afterwards where you could well end up being kilometres out to sea?

Madness!

I thought it was madness myself. Quite frankly would have served them blardy well right if a decent wave had come in. Yeah sure the reports where that it wasn't going to be that serious but they would have gotten a heck of shock if it had a 6m wave like in Samoa.

As for 10 mins to the car....lady, you wouldn't have made if there had been a tsunami.

idiots.

And once they get to the car (If they even made it!) Do they not factor in possible traffic jams due to all the other idiots with the same dumb ass plan?

Personally, I'd have been interested to watch from a clifftop or somewhere, but on east cape thats easy to do. There are plenty of spots you could watch from and be perfectly safe as long as the wave wasn't 200m or more high. I certainly wouldn't be heading down to the sand!!

There was a woman on the news who took her toddler and he was walking about 5m in from of her right on the waters edge - such a silly thing to do!

Also on the news there was a family with a picnic basket! Police said "There is a tsunami warning please turn around" and they said "oh we're just having lunch"

C'mon!!!!!!!

Yeah but in fairness they took the kids with them, so they would still be removing themselves from the gene pool

I was actually thinking the very same thing today. They treated like it was a day out while people in Samoa were killed.

What would these people do if a really big disaster hits? Will they be at the beach again waiting for the wave? Sitting on a fault line waiting for the next quake? I mean, seriously.

I was disgusted in the people that took their children to the beach to look as well.  I don't understand where they are coming from!!!  Even though we are well away from the beach in the Mount, we still headed for the hills, and packed the car and left in plenty of time.  When you have a family you do everything you can to protect them, not put them in the face of danger!  We didn't "wait and see" if the wave would arrive, it's ALWAYS better to be safe, than sorry.  So disrespectful for the ones that lost their lives, and homes in Samoa and Tonga.

Even after the boxing day tsunami, people still don't comprehend the seriousness of a 1 metre wall of water!

I was thinking the same as well - and I was also extremely disappointed that the media interviewed these nit-wits, some of who were laughing and joking about how much of a let-down it was! All the while concerned friends and families would have been watching for any information they could muster.
Now thats poor taste!

Equally disgusted, I think when they filmed those interviews they didn't realise how many people had lost lives - but to make light of it, is just so wrong and imagine waiting on a pier of all places to see a giant wave.

Beyond stupid

the people that said how "disappointed" and "let down" they were, made me so upset. we have family in the cooks that were luckily spared from it all, but it is a tad close to home for a lot of our friends and family

Agreed.
The media can be incredibly irresponsible when it comes to reporting.
But it goes to show the mentality of some.

What I shudder to think (after the obvious "WTF, morons!" thoughts) is that NZ has an awesome reputation in the tourism industry.
Imagine the thoughts running through tourists heads while they're watching our news coverage.

Tacky.

i know its a bit ridiculous aye. yea nothing happened and it was almost guaranteed from the start the government were playing it safe but its still incredibly stupid. i think ppl dont realise that its not a 1m wave that would crash on the shore and dissipate again but a 1m high wave that is 1m above sea level for miles coming forward with a hell of a force that would just stop when it hits the shore. man ppl are thick.
