Just curious about what happens if your waters are leaking.

I am 38 weeks and pretty sure it is my waters leaking. Def not pee and not too sure but think there is too much and its too watery for mucous. Started on Tueday night but have been holding off ringing MW as my own one is away and I would have the back up.

Bubs is happy as and moving. Have a sore bakc but have had that for ages anyway. No cramps etc. No show but have had some snot looking stuff from time to time.

If I rang would they induce me or leave me. Am hoping to hold out until Monday when my MW is back.

Thoughts please!

Ring the midwife - if it's your waters you need to be on antibiotics for you and baby. If they've been broken for more than 24 hours then make sure you get the antibiotics. I didn't recieve antibiotics when I had extended rupture of waters (just leaking, no puddles IYKWIM) and because of that we had non specific septicemia

Ring your mw

but a good way to check its your waters , put a pad in , lie down for 15 mins and then check it , if its your waters , the pad should be saturated by the time the times up ,and , if you dare to smell it , it smells either like nothing at all, or can smell a bit like bleach

Depends on who you see and your midwife's viewpoint, some won't induce you but will make you keep an eye on signs of infection and may or may not give you ABs.

When the cervix starts to soften up the wee fibres holding it together break down and come out quite watery so it could be discharge. However I think it would be agood idea to ring the back up and let her know. If its just a trickle it might seal up again anyway.

Caitlynsmygirl - thats a really good test! Wouldn't have worked for me though, I was only leaking very slowly so a pad would last 4 hours before I changed it for hygienes sake.

I had my waters leak with Spencer, and then rupture completely (12 hours later) and then continue to leak (cos the waters refill). When I first saw midwife the plan was to come back the next day as I saw the back up and maybe go to the hospital for the test (which I have heard they no longer use cos of the number of false negative results) and she said I would need antibiotics once in labour cos of the increased risk of infection. Nothing about being induced though.
Once they ruptured completely then I was put on antibiotics and kept at the hospital on bedrest, a big part of that was to do with me being 35 weeks and him being breech as well though.

I was also told that a small tear in the membranes can repair itself.

By the way I got a negative on the test and the OB tried to tell me I could have peed myself (I was in what looked like labour at the time, turned out to be a false one) and in the end cos I got so annoyed she did a scan and what do you know, there were no bloody waters left oh and until then they didn't even know he was breech, they all thought he was head down.

Oh and also the waters quite often smell like semen.

Lol really wouldn't you know if you'd been peeing yourself continuously?

She actually thought I may have done a large pee of my pants and mistook it for when my waters went completely Despite me telling her I was on the loo when it happened and had already peed and the fact that I could feel where it came from, I don't think there is any mistaking it really.
It had also caused the false labour, I mean really, how do I trick the CTG machine as well!

far out cuppatea:( i thought the test fail proof with the black for waters?

if it were me and it was i would have to have the AB's cause of strep B... so guess it depends..

Thanks for your input, girls.

Hmm, there is a big difference between pee and what is happening to me.

Am really not sure now and am completely confused. Am not too stressed about it and kinda want labour just to start. I will ring the back up MW tomorrow to see what she says. Am hoping that she will leave me be until Monday.

Rach, would it actually leak out of you if it was discharge? Like could it run down your leg kinda thing?

This is the most information I have ever given out on such a gross type of thing.

Also I have smelt it and it smells like nothing described

My hind waters went and I did this mad dash to the toilet thinking I was peeing and got totally hysterical thinking all my bladder muscles had all of a sudden turned to putty my mum thought it was hilarious but she heard the gush so knew better than me that it was waters. It sealed itself off, I got checked out and I was fine for the next 2 weeks before my waters broke for real! Def call your backup MW though I reckon, better safe than sorry!!

Peanut I dunno if this will help, never had masses of discharge so no idea what that feels like, but with the waters it would leak when I stood up after sitting/lying for a while or sometimes him moving about would push some out. I rarely just felt it kinda trickle like you do with discharge or AF (TMI I know)

I would call your mw

My waters began to leak at 28 weeks with DD and I ended up in hospital until she was born at 34.5 weeks.

They needed to monitor me and the baby just to make sure we were both okay

I would call the MW just be on the safe side

<My waters didn't really smell of anything at all, until I started seeing the meconium in them - then they did smell funky!

Peanut, as long as they don't smell like urine , there is a good chance its your waters, so better to be on the safe side and ring your mw .

Def sound like you waters are leaking. Not tryingto freak yo out but you really need to ring your MW now as you are putting your baby and yourself at risk of infection. Anything over 24 hours needs to be monotored and you said its been since Tuesday.

They have a test that they can check whether its waters or something else.

The amnio sticks aren't actually the most reliable things as they pick up other things as well.

I'm not really sure Peanut if it would run down your leg but if it is still leaking like that I think its best to ring your mw. It really depends on your midwife to what she will recommend.

you should let the mw know. My waters were leaking and i was induced but only because I was 41 weeks anyway. There is a risk of infection and that's the main reason you should let her know

Just a quick update. Rang the MW this morning as had a small show so thought I better. She is leaving me be today to see what happens (hmm, nothing so far!) but will get me in later today for monitoring. She is pretty sure it is my waters and is thinking an induction tomorrow if nothing happens.

Thanks for all your input and advice.

Peanut, can I ask what ended up happening with this? I think I've got something similar going on.

Definitely not pee, and not enough to be too concerned about, but waaaay more discharge than normal for most of yesterday and still going today. It's kind of egg-whitey, perhaps a bit more liquid, doesn't really smell like anything. Sorry for the TMI

Very weird seeing this post again.

Mine was not egg whitey and was literally just clear fluid. It would be more so when rolling over in bed or when moving quickly. There was def no smell to it what so ever.

I believe my waters were leaking from the Tuesday (?) night around 2am when I felt wet. I ranr my MW on Friday morning as had a very very very tiny show or what I thought might be. MW left me all day to see what happened and I went in at about 5pm for monitoring and the waters swab. Bubs was fine and waters swab showed it was my waters. Sent home and was heading in for induction the next day but ended up going into labour abour an hour later and had him the next day.

Hope that helps.
