I've decided to get Ashleigh a nice dolls house for Xmas. But I can't decide whether to get a nice wooden one (very spensy) or go with a plastic one (fisher price have a good one). I've been looking on TM for a few weeks now and nothing really jumps out at me - apart from the plastic ones but I'm not sure if I should spend the extra $ and go wooden? I really don't want to spend over $150. Do you have an other half that is handy with a hammer? They could make a decent size wooden one, and you could paint it up? Or you could always wait and let your wee girl decide on paint/carpet colours. I found it so much fun to be the "interior decorator" for my dolls house when I was little. (I had a kitset wooden one that my parents helped me put together - it was relatively cheap but came out really nice).
Otherwise whatever you can afford, I'm sure she will love it  ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

LOL funny you should ask coz right now the gremlins are "helping" my mum put together http://www.kidscentral.com.au/p-2554-dolls-mansion.aspx - this dolls house that they bought them for their birthday. It's a little OTT I think, but hey, I have four girls so it will get plenty of use!
They also have the Little People house which is much smaller, and Maya has a huge plastic open-out dolls house which she got for her second birthday and it's still going strong, so I'm sure whichever option you go with, it will be great. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Emma, that is VERY cool and exactly what I would ideally like to get! But eekkk at the pricetag  ! Hope your girls like it!
Littlebug, nah DH is useless lol!! I have been looking for a run down one though so we could paint it up and carpet, curtain etc. But still haven't come across the right thing yet! we have been having this very same discussion in our household for the past month. In the end we decided to go Wooden, as I figured it is something that (hopefully) lasts for a while and it is quite a nice toy to pass down to family. I really wish my parents had kept the one that Dad made for me and we could have passed it onto Ella. Luckily DH is really into that sort of thing, so he is going to make one.

I'm a huge fan of wooden dolls houses. The great thing about them is all little girls fall in love and if you don't mind spending the extra dosh they live forever. Which means when she grows out of it you can pack it away and give it back to her when she has a daughter of her own  I think thats such a special idea.-------------

Personally... I prefered my wooden one when I was a child! If you get a plastic one that needs assembling, it can be a real bummer if something snaps! Wooden one was great as it came assembled and had wallpaper and carpet and stairs etc but was pricey ($700 from Kircaldie and Stains in Wellington). However plastic ones are just as good if you have the patience to set it up carefully! But thats just my opinion!
I agree with the whole wooden one and passing it on from generation to generation, I'm glad my parents got me one as now I'm having a little girl and she gets my one  . I treasured it and it still looks brand new.
I know farmers has a plastic one atm, it comes with a family of 4 and some furniture, it might go on sale round Labour Weekend or Xmas/Boxing Day if you want to wait that long! We have a homemade one here that DH's grandfather made for Lauren, but I have seen some great wooden ones at Toy World and they come with all the furniture too.

We just brought Sienna one for her xmas pressy its a wooden one and i think it was about $200 on special but that came with a whole heap of wooden furniture.

Anthea that one from baby warehouse looks awsome for $83!!!! We have a very basic wooden one, its great as the playroom is very sunny, so after a couple of years the paint is starting to fade. DD and I are going to give it a "makeover" in the Christmas holidays!

Makayla got a wooden one last christmas similar to Emma's one, got it at kmart was bout $150 got and elevator on the side and comes with furniture, she has loads of barbies and plays with it all the time ,lives in the lounge, thank goodness we are moving in two weeks and have a kids lounge again !!! -------------

I havent read all the other posts but ill tell you my story lol...
I decided to build Taylah a nice wooden dolls house. I have finished the house however havent painted it. I have been looking at buying wooden furniture to go in it, and even on TM the cheapest set is about $20-$30 just for one room. I wish i had of just gone and got a plastic one that came with all the furniture, would have been much cheaper. Weather you go plastic or wooden id get one that comes with furniture -------------
