Hayden is coming up 15mths and he still wont eat red meat in any kind of non puree'd form - ie he'll sometimes eat a jar of baby food spagetti bolognaise which I can only assume has some kind of mince in it lol but he wont eat the spag bol or lasagne that I make... I've tried meatballs for finger food, strips of regular meat etc but he just spits it all out - will have a little chew occasionally but not for very long.
He will eat bits of chicken if its moist like thighs or smoked but not if its a bit dry like breast. Will sometimes eat a little bit of ham. Wont eat bacon. Likes sausages. I cant believe we are still so far away from having him eat the same food as us, its really frustrating. Granted we hardly ever eat red meat so maybe I havent been offering it to him often enough, TBH its probably only fortnightly if that that we have red meat. He used to get a little bit excited about chewing on a juicy bit of meat from a roast when he was first weaning but now he isnt interested at all. Am starting to think I might even have to give into to these stupid vitamin drops the health visitors (like plunket) over here (UK) recommend as his vegie consumption isnt overly flash either. Any tips of how I can bring him back from the brink of fussy eating-dom before its too late???? ETA - I tried him with fish fingers and crumbed chicken fingers recently and he wasnt interested in either - does it sound like a texture thing and if so will he get over it???????????? -------------

Wow sounds like you've tried lots of options! Speaking from a vegetarian standpoint, (and not wanting to sound bias cos that's not where I'm coming from!) do you think it could be the texture thing? I've read quite a bit on how wee children and kids often don't like the taste of meat and it's our persistence (or insistence) with it that makes them adapt? If it's important to you that he eats red meat then maybe keep trying the different textures but if you guys don't eat alot of it yourselves then in your position I'd be tempted to just keep inlcluding him in family meals that have chicken and or fish as a base and hopefully he'll copy you eventually. From a health point of view, I'm not sure about those vitamin drops- it depends on the brand but alot of extra crap in them so be a bit careful about the quality. You don't want to be gicing him aspartame or suuchrin(sp) laced pills because he's not eating meat yet! The other thing to try if you're worried about his iron/protein intake etc is to maybe try stuff like hummus on toast or blend cooked red lentils through tomato based sauces... my kids dont like meat much either and its only now that the older only one is nearly 6 that he will eat meatballs and try other meat dishes. the 4 year old only likes sausages - oh they do like ham tho - and the 19 mth old probably doesnt eat that much of it either... i think its normal... ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

| I don't think its that bigger deal, I've been vego almost all my life and it hasn't done me any harm. But practically speaking I'd just keep offering, don't try and force the issue. I know with me right throughout my life when someone tried to force a certain food it made me more stubborn not to eat it lol. My boy eats a nice amount of meat but its usually packet stuff cause I won't cook meat unless its just stick in the oven type so he eats fish, chicken nuggets, sausages, sausage rolls, chicken cordon beiu (however thats spelt) and things like that. |

caden wont eat much meat either, he will eat corned beef if its really tender, and he will eat mince if its in a thick sauce, but anything else just gets biffed off the highchair.
I wouldnt force him either, I think its pretty normal for toddlers to be fussy. We are having major issues with Caden eating dinner, he wont eat ANY veges or meat, so I have given up trying to fight him, and he just gets whatever he will eat, which is usually fruit and sammies etc ------------- |

| My little one will eat almost anything meat! she is just over a year, major battle going on with dinner time and veges at the moment - I think she likes being indepent and feeding herself. She is getting better with fruit and I have to admit she loves ice cream (along with yoghurt) which she is getting each day as we are on a huge bottle strike (will still drink her water) at the moment too! I think it is just trial and error and perservance its so not worth pushing it. Maybe try muffins, fritters, quinche - all things that meat can be added too. I have to laugh as pumpkin is a favorite (normally) but won't touch potato mashed so mummy outwitted her last night and roasted up some potato and kumara - and she ate it - they are so cute! |
