I used my credit card for purchase on a VERY reputable american photo site to purchase photos my aunty wanted and got them sent to her (in USA) 2 weeks ago...took a week but thats ok. At end of order something poppd up and I clicked ok...thought it was something to do with the site...but turns out I signed up to some other american thing maybe as today I get tickets sent online to me for some festival in texas that I never ordered - charged to my credit card!!!

argh!!!!!!! am so mad - Ive emailed my bank manager to try and get it sorted as no way of checking if really did or not today ....ugh...am so mad I clicked OK so easily and so mad my card is being used! this happened after I left the states too...someone had dinner on my visa for once a month for 6 months!!!

beware online with your credit card....

I have one specific credit card that I use only for online purchases that has an insanely low ($600) limit on it. I figure that way even if someone does use the card for bad purposes they ain't going to get too far on it.

I use loaded card and top up as I need it... the good (and sometimes bad point) is that I usually can't make spur of the moment purchases as my bank takes a day or two to transfer payments (not good when I was trying to book flights on that grab-a-seat deal!!)

Yeah, I worry about this sort of thing, too. That's why I only ever use Paypal if I'm buying stuff from an international site. Not sure if that makes it any safer, but I do have to approve each payment so I guess so?

Will be interested to hear how your bank handle it - we bank with ASB and noticed that we had a strange purchase on our visa statement, we rang the bank straight away and they cancelled the card and re-imbursed us. They are also really good at calling us out of the blue if there are transactions on the card that they think are strange. We often get called on our mobiles when we are using our card overseas to check that we are really using it!  Fantastic service in my opnion!!

I fell for some internet scam Though I was only paying $3 nz for some info and when I got my credit card statement that month I found that all these other American companies had been charging me for things I didn't sign up for. And that took my card over the limit just when I had got it under . I just reported my card missing and got a new one. But will be very careful from now on and only use it to pay for things in NZ.

Depending on your bank, you should be able to go in/ call them and tell them its a fraudulent transaction!!

You'll be covered and it will get reimbursed. The cardholder is protected against almost all types of fraudulent activity (unless they use your PIN, then you have to pay up). Complete PITA though!

Yeah I thought you were safeguarded unless they used your pin or had your signature.

Grrrrr! I have a beef with credit cards at the moment too. I cancelled my amex at the beginning of the year and they phoned me last week to tell me I owe $140!!! 2 direct debits came our after I had cancelled my card. 1 for AA and 1 for something online that I am not sure about....they are apparently automatic ones. I knew about AA and was waiting to get an invoice from them as I assumed their direct debit would have been rejected....I forgot that was how it was paid.

So I asked Amex, how can they take money from an account that doesnt exist? Well, it still does, even though I have cancelled it. I need to cancel the direct debits too. Grrrrrrrrr! Wish I had known that!
