Is anyone eating store brought mayo?

Might sound terrible but I do know I can eat McDonalds mayo as its heat treated but does anyone know about supermarket mayo?

I believe it's the homemade mayo that you need to be wary of, storebought stuff like best foods should be fine

Yes you can eat it as it almost 100% fat. That means that the bacteria (which need oxygen to grow) can't breathe and so aren't very active, making it low risk. Thank goodness because i love that best foods one.

A guy said on good morning the other day about how unborn baby's need to be exposed to germs and stuff so they can build up their immune system. I'd say eat what ever you like, except if its really dodgy. Pregnancy has turned into a medical science thing now!

I ate it and its yummy!!! Hmmm

Berg19 reason being you have to be so careful is that babies dont have or have very little of an immune system so they cant fight the germs themselves. Hense babies being born too early or stillborn. To be honest I wouldnt go around recommending to eat whatever you like sorry!

Each to their own I say Inlove28!

If you want to follow current medical advice and avoid the suggested foods then do, if you want to go old school like our mums did then thats personal choice. Pregnancy is an individual and very personal time.

I ate store brought Mayo as crafty1 said, its all fat anyway. hehe.

Lol I think I felt better eating it before you pointed that out (though I probably knew that in the back of my mind anyway)

NZFSA says that store bought mayo is ok to eat, this is cut from their website:

Sauces and dressings
salad dressings (oil and vinegar), bought mayonnaise, tomato sauce etc

Store in fridge once opened, check maximum storage time

I eat best foods and homemade mayo but then I don't avoid any of the food on the naughty list either I just eat what appeals and avoid what doesn't lol lucky for me my pregnant cravings involve alot of pumpkin, steak and avocado

If i didn't eat anything on the "naughty" list i wouldn't be able to eat anything!! But yes, each to their own. Your pregnancy is your own, so you decide what you want to do and what you don't want to do. I wasn't recommending to eat whatever you like, i was just stating my opinion inlove28.

The eating thing is such a controversial thing...........

I personally think that just like smoking and drinking and drugs have been proven to harm unborn babies, so have certain foods and well im not prepared to take the risk of playing russian roulette with my babies life for the sake of my own selfish taste buds for a mere 9months!!!! but each to their own, i just know that I have done everything to keep my baby safe from harm by making informed choices..........im glad the information is out there so i know how to keep my baby safe from any nasties that might lurk

Best foods lite has slightly (yes very slightly) less fat in it and tastes just as great!!! My DS 5 loves it and requests on his sandwiches every day, just mayo nothing else.......lol

I wasnt taking a stab at you Berg19 , just that times have changed and there are sooo many new super foods out there, unless u make it yourself who really knows what u r eating???

The concern with mayo is that home-made is made with raw eggs, shop bought isn't. It will have been heat treated also. If you can buy something that isn't refrigerated to start wtih, then it won't be home made mayo, so it will be fine

I ate the Best Foods lite mayo all the way through my pregnancy (mmmmm potato salad.....)

Re. the food thing, each to their own. I made friends with a woman in the NNU (who was also in my antenatal and aquanatal class) whose little boy arrived at 33w because he had contracted listeria in the womb, which then went on to develop into meningitis. He had a pretty bad prognosis (they didn't expect him to live). He made a fantastic recovery, but I will always remember what they had to go through. In saying that - I just used common sense with what food I ate (so no raw meats etc) and will do so next time as well - but what A went through after having her son, I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

it's just egg mayonaise - homemade you need to be weary off.

That sucks kate.
I normally eat what I want, but i don't like things like fancy cheeses etc anyway so it's ok, and always making sure your food is hot.

things like ham and chicken rolls from say the bakery are no good, as the bacteria lives on that food, and other deli meats that you would normally get.

Bloody steak? hmmm not sure i love mine well done!!

Babe, cold meats are high risk for listeria (well, relatively, anyway), and pregnant women are extra susceptible to listeria. If you ate ham that happened to be contaminated with listeria it is likely to affect you (although you may not always notice the symptoms) and it can transfer to the baby and cause brain damage, premature labour and even death of the baby.

The risk of getting it is pretty low (hence why many people get away with eating *risky* foods), but the consequences of getting it are devastating, and it does affect several babies every year.

For me, I just can't place my own *greediness* ahead of my baby's safety. Its only 9 months of being careful what I eat, so its very worth it for me. That said, I have a list of tasty treats for when I've had the baby.

Haha - thats funny cos i think we all start out with that very same intention!! but there are only so many avo and tomato sandwiches you can eat in 40 weeks.........and of course when my MS came in at 6 weeks it was every man for themselves on what makes you feel less seedy.
I ate a lot of egg sandwiches also. I also bought a toaster for work so i could have avo and tom on toast and cheese and tom on toast as a change.........

But hey, I hope you do better than others with the good intentions..........I definetly havent used this time for a total pig out but i havent really watched closely either.....plenty of time for that after ive had baby......lol

I love ham and it kills me not to eat it BUT i have found ways around it by cooking it - so ham and cheese toasties, ham and blue cheese quiche, ham and blue cheese stuffed in a chicken breast wrapped in bacon and baked. etc etc.

And last pregnancy i cooked my own leg of ham for xmas and reckon that is fine to eat because you know it's fresh and the preparation involved. I got a quality free range ham from a good butcher.

Cold meat is about the only thing i try to avoid but must confess that salami has made it through on occasion!

We will be getting a ham for Christmas, but our leftovers will be done the same as Crafty1's - in a toasted sandwich, or cut into steaks and made into ham steaks on the BBQ.

And babe im with you! I love my steak blue! As when its about your baby, its also about yourself. You can't take away everything you like, its just about common sense really! Lucky my baby's coming out very soon! (hopefully, lazy lil sh*t! ) and the first thing im going to eat is Sushi!!

I used my pg for the exact opposite reason .. I had a huge carb fest!!!!! (and takeaways, and anything else I felt like), because I always ate really cleanly and low carb because of my sport.

(Paying for it now though)

hehehe I laughed when I read that too as I even bought this book of recipes for when you're pregnant and although I try to eat fruit and veges etc I have to say I've eaten more crap during this pregnancy than I normally would. I hope you do better than me - and some people definitely do :) Each trimester I tried to tell myself I'd eat better than the last. I probably have eaten the best in this trimester so far.

I'm so glad I'll have my baby by the time it's xmas ham time. Yum yum yum!!!
