I was watching a story on the news the other night about the poor families who've been stuck without power for 2 weeks down south. One of the women they interviewed made a comment that stuck in my head a bit, and I was wondering what you all think?
She said 'You know if this happened in Auckland they would have had it sorted out by now" As an Aucklander for the last 14 years, I was initially defensive about that, but then I thought 'Well maybe that's true' How wrong do you think that is, if it is true? ------------- Mel, Mummy to E: 6, B: 4 and:

| being a south islander sorry I would have to agree with her. It would be treated as the end of the world if auckland was without power for weeks but little old farmers living in the south are expected to harden up and deal with it. Just my opinion though |

I personally feel if it had happened in Auckland the majority would be sorted (as in the South Island), but rural Auckland would still be struggling to regain power, bearing in mind the Auckland bondries are from bombay to welsford
Also you need to remember the power failure Auckland had some 6 years ago where the CBD was without power, that was not sorted in a matter of hours and many business were without power for at least a week while Vector tried to solve the problem ------------- ">

to be honest, when she said that i just about pissed myself. i would tend to agree with her, i'm a southlander too. i really feel for the mothers with kids, trying to get there clothes washed, can you imagine!

I'm from the north island and I'd have to say I'd agree. The amount of complaining that went on when auckland was without power for a few hours was so funny and here are these people down south who have been without it for ages and they aren't complaining anything like the aucklanders did for a few hours. If they did I think they probably have got it back on faster just to shut them up

As an ex-Londoner AND a JAFA - would it not have more to do with accessability to the areas without power? rather than getting it fixed quicker just because it is Auckland?
I would imagine that the reason some areas are STILL without power is because they are still isolated from the people who can help them, rather than just leaving them to tough it out... you'd hope so anyways 
Anyways, just my opinion but I think the media hyped up the Auckland CBD power cut and blew it out of proportion, it was only for a few hours after all! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I totally agree and I'm an Aucklander....good grief, we were without power for 5 hours and you'd think the world had ended!!! That really dominated thew news and there was a big investigation and it seemed like the south being without power was tacked on as an after thought!!! I couldn't believe the media!
When you compare the two situations there is nothing in it...sure sorry to the business owners who lost income but come on...it just seems a bit precious to me that there was such an uproar over that compared to the Southerners. I think the media made it sound worse than it actually was. I don't know anyone that really complained about the power outages, other than me as ours didn't go out and therefore I wasn't sent home 
Not all Aucklanders are stuck up and only into their own business. I personally take a lot of objection to being put into that category (not that anyone here has), and to be fair, I don't live in Auckland, I live in North Shore City ------------- ">

im an aucklander and i was soooo pissed about the power shortage the other day!!! i ALWAYS pray for powercuts/ building burning down/tsunami/volcanic eruption just so we can cancel patients...and the one time we actually get a decent powercut-i pulled a sicky!!!!!
but i do agree that auckland would have been helped earlier, but it could also as someone else said(n im too lazy to check) be a lot to do with accessibility as well. Would suck tho-being with out power that long, and with it being so cold.....

I agree - It's the accesability or lack thereof that has kept those areas without power, nothing to do with them being seen as less important than it would if it was Auckland. I'm a JAFA and we were without power for 10 hours. Was a pain as I was unable to give Joshua a bath and we were without heating on what was a pretty cold day but we weren't complaining too much. A friend of a friend was stuck in her townhouse complex as it has a keycoded gate which shorted due to the powercut. Now that would have sucked! And one of my antenatal group was totally up the you-know-what as she bottle feeds her little one and was unable to make formula up. She ended up having to go to a camping store and buy a camping stove to heat them up! But given that most of the rest of New Zealand think Aucklanders are stuck up whingers who freak out if their flat whites aren't perfect, perhaps we should just complain a bit louder and earn that reputation for real.... ------------- Joshua Hadynn - Born 3 May 2006 |

I can't say the power went out for us (at home on the North Shore), and I don't know if it went out at my work in the city, but personally I'm not too fussed if the power goes out. Partly because we have gas mains, but even if we didn't, I realise it could be a lot worse ! Well as a rural-er and having a week of off / on power cuts (a few hours here, 8 hours there etc) we are equipped to a point to cope with it, most rural houses have woodburners that can be cooked on etc - However we can't milk without power or have power on our fences.
Aucklanders (just as people are saying Auckland but my point is surburbia) have power out for a working day and are packing a sad cause they have lost "money and customers" - The southerners (dairy) who have no power will have their stock who are bursting with milk (if they are winter milking) stock without food and also for this length of time probably no food themselves. I know Auckland had the 50 day power cut but food was accessible etc. I don't want to cause a "backlash" but the poor southerners have no power, are isolated, no phones and this has been going on for about 2 weeks I think... And I know I would be packing a stink for not being able to go on OhBaby for a weekend!!! Ramble over!! ------------- http://www.snugglepie.com">

Not to mention all the issues there are if the cows aren't milked at their usual times, or if there's no power to the shed to chill the milk - YUK ! Long term health problems to the cows, the "Jaffas" not getting the milk in the fridge, (even tho most farms are export but that is a minor issue!! LOL)

< language=> hehehe well now im gonna stand on the soapbox *steps up* I am in the area called Auckland but consider myself a country girl as i live in Wellsford (which is an hour & a half north of aucks saves getting out the map book I understand coming from a dairy background myself how important it is to have the cows milked HOWEVER this is not the first time a power cut has happened (maybe the time fame is though) but is there not a way to prepare IE generators etc. remember our ancestors coped for many years before power was invented............ Haha Sylv you just reminded me - My Pop farmed down in Greymouth back in the day and had a 12 a side WALK THROUGH shed!! (that means milk by hand!) Him and David have many a talk about farming!

Hey all! The husband was telling me that some of the guys he works with who live out Hunua way were saying the other night that it's actually not that unusual to lose their power out there for a week or so, and that happens every winter apparently! They all have generators because it's so normal!!

Frankly I think the media focussed a lot on the Auckland power cut more than the Sth Island because so many more viewers are in Auckland...

I used to live at Muriwai and we would always have power cuts - so much so that we were really prepared with candles, gas cookers etc. And if it was a really windy day I would cook tea early just in case!
