Josiah has started taking mouthfulls of drink, and then deliberately spitting it out. He has a non-spill cup, so he's not tipping his drinks out. He's tried once or twice, but seems to have figured out it doesn't work. We tell him "no" and take the cup away if he keeps doing it, but the problem is both Nat and I like to have his cup with water in it available for him to get whenever he wants it... and if I'm constantly having to take it off him it kind of defeats the purpose!

Any ideas to get him to stop? He seems to have figured this out on his own... I know none of us have taught him this rather annoying new habit.

What a clever boy to figure things out by himself. No help really, but Jake did the same thing and grew out of it pretty quickly

yeah sorry, Kobe was exactly the same around that age but grew out of it. I think cos they get a reaction they keep doing it so maybe try ignoring him (the spitting not him, you know what I mean) I know it looks gross and can get messy but the novelty will wear off if he isnt gettin any attention for it. Kobe does it with food at the moment then gives it to the dog, very gross

becca, jack did the same thing not too long ago and got over it quickly like kobe and jake. it is annoying though isn't it, especially in this cold weather when you have to try so hard to keep them dry and warm

Alan is doing the same and like you I like him having water anytime he want's it so it is a pain. I have notied he seem's to do it when he has really had enough to drink so I take it off him as soon as he does that then give it back about half hour later till he does it again but it is a pain to remember to give it back;. Sory not much help here either.

Sounds like a fun toddler game...I'd ignore it (put a plastic sheet under wherever he is or make him drink on the lino) and over the top praise him when he does drink properly. He'll figure it out eventually and work out something else to get attention (or work out that good attention is really cool and go for that)...toddlers are attention pirhannas.
