I don't want to hijack Jax post about her lovely bouncer, so I thought I'd start a new one...

How much time will your partner/hubby get off when your new baby arrives? How much are they entitled to, and how much extra are they taking?

Nathaniel is entitled to one day to attend the birth... and nothing extra. He has come to a private arrangement with the school so that he can have two or three days more without cutting into his sickleave.

Hi Becca,

My hubby will take around 1 to 2 weeks off. Would like him to take more time off but unfortunately he won't have enough annual leave. My mum is going to help out when she can.

Holy macaroni batman ! One day !?

I think Roland is entitled to two weeks "paternity leave" (unpaid), and then if he wants to take paid leave after that, it's up to him to decide.

I think we are quite lucky again in that his employer is so good with things like this (time off), especially considering how long he has been there (9 years now I think...).

I'd love for him to have four weeks, but will settle for three

Bruce is entitled to 2 days paid leave, which I think is quite pathetic. He has just started a new job so we're not sure if he would be able to take any unpaid leave. In his last job he got 2 weeks paid leave which was brilliant.

i think dean is going to have 2wks of his annual leave when bubs is born. it may turn out to be more yet. he gets 4wks holiday each year and this year is his turn to work over xmas so it makes sense to use these weeks up when bubs comes otherwise he'll just loose them.

Well as mentioned my hubby is taking 4 weeks - all paid. He gets 1 week paid and 1 week unpaid paternity...he's only taking the paid week. The other 3 weeks are annual leave.

Take a look at paternity leave entilement on the ird website, I cant remeber the exact page I say it,..but it said that your partner is legally entitled to 2 weeks unpaid leave.

my hubby gets 2 weeks unpaid leave, but as baby is due over xmas, and his firm shut down over that time, he wont need to take any. he might take an extra week annual leave, and go back a week later in january, but we really haven't discussed it too much. We are just happy that he (and we lol) will be able to have annual leave and get paid this time round :)

Atish had 2 days (Monday 31st and Tuesday 1st) after Zaara was born. I was in hospital since Sat. Since I had to stay in the hospital till Friday, Atish went back to work, but use to finish early every day and come spend time with his daughter and wife!

MIL came to stay with us for a week after I came home and he was at work....she left and he took the week off (paid). He could have taken 4-5 weeks if he wanted (his boss is a gem)...but nah.....he went to work!!!

Mind you he used to come home around 2.30pm every day...so I guess it was ok!

The timing was great for us! Arna was born June 2nd which is in the "dry" season for the farm that we were working on so David just had to do about 3 hours of work a day and was home for the rest! but when arna was about a month old calving started and I was lucky to see David before 11pm!! (5am - 11pm on the farm with brekkie, lunch and dinner break) - usually they are home around 6pm but the boss we had made david help out with his contracting business...
Anyway... If #2 (wen it is in my tummy) is due in August well it will be me and bub (and Arna) on our own all day for abou 4 months!! YIPEE (not)

As hubby is part owner of a business he can only afford to take 2 weeks away (and I think he'll be paying himself his annual leave?!?!?)

WHOA!!@!@!!@ Roland has survived NINE YEARS at that place....I have a whole new respect for him.

My hubby's employer is amazingly great about paternity leave/time off. Nick had two and a half weeks off when Andrew was born that just happened followed by them setting up a workstation for him at home so that he could work from home once or twice a week if he wanted to. This time he is going to take annual leave of two weeks - because he has excess leave and needs to use it or lose it...and has been able to work from home through the yukky challenging days of the pregnancy.

Oh - and to brag a little more...because he works mainly with an American team in Detroit (ikk - think 8 Mile) they organised an AMAZINGLY huge baby bath hamper full of the complete Pumpkin Patch newborn and boy range when Andrew was born and with lots of really nice Body Shop lotions and oils for me. It would have been about US$500 worth. Very cool.

My partner gets a whopping 4 days off. Apparently it's something to do with me not working, and how his paternity leave provision doesn't kick in without me in employment. His HR department is all heart.

We're going to work around it with his annual leave and see how it goes. Hopefully they'll change their minds and let him stay at home a little longer. We'll see.

My DH gets 2 weeks paid leave and then is taking another 3 weeks in october

I think my DH will take a week off, he gets 2 days paid 'special leave' and the other 3 can be taken as 'sick leave'. With bubs due close to Xmas he will take further time off over then as annual leave as work shuts down then anyway and he always has leave. If bubs is 2 weeks late it will be getting close to Xmas and the 5 days will run into the Xmas leave.

My DH only got one week annuel leave and he was lucky to get that cause he had only been in hte job a month, but they knew we were expecting when he got the job so they were really good. Not sure about this job prob be the same although his newq boss is very family first person so if we need a little longer he will peob get it.
All DH are intittled to 2 week's unpaid leave well that is what we have been told unfortunalty we can't afford to take uupaid leave.
Becca I think that is pretty crappy to be honest you would think that school's would be better then that.

Similar situation here - I'm trying to talk hubby into taking a week off.  He's self-employed, so no leave of any kind!  I'll keep working on it...

Yeah, it is pretty crap that male teachers only get one day off to attend the birth of their child... they can take leave without pay, but that means organising work (usually book stuff) for the relief teacher to do, and we can't really afford for Nat to take much unpaid time off.

First and second year teachers are supposed to have a certain amount of non-contact time over and above what other teachers get. Nat is actually teaching 30 minutes a week more than he should (to help the school out, and it's only 30 minutes! ) so he's asked the DP (deputy principal) if he can take the accumulated extra time when Bubs comes as leave with pay. It should add up to two or three days, so that will be good.

Hmmm Mark may have a couple of days off but his work take complusory leave for three weeks at Christmas and if he uses all his leave when baby is here we will have no pay for over Christmas.

I dont mind tho. I remember from Paige it was pretty much me sleeping and feeding and me doing house stuff while she was little til 3 months anyway. Nothing much for Dad to do during the day that he cant do at night and on the weekends!!!
