Oh the glamour..... I'm just trying to remember from last time what the difference, if any, is between maternity pads, and the super size with wings 'normal' pads? I think maternity pads might be longer in length than super pads, but I'm not sure as I'm not usually a pad user.
After the first pack or two, do you think you can get away with using usual 'super' pads? The maternity ones are more expensive than the super ones, and rarely go on special....

Yeah I swapped to the super pads quite early, the maternity ones are so friggin uncomfy to wear, like having a rolled up towel shoved in your knickers and the super ones seem just as absorbent to me.

I prefer the overnight super pads to maternity ones after the worst of it. To begin with, the thickest maternity pads you can find are best (normally the cheap ones - you do not want those thin things when it's all achey.

I used the nighttime super pads after the first week too. And same, I'd never used pads until I gave birth!! I also took heaps of the hospital ones home with me becuase those are heavy duty and free!!!

I personally found the hospital ones far more comfortable and still have all a full unopened packet and half a packet left of the ones I bought.
I had pretty ligth pp bleeding and switched to the stayfree ultras when I got home for the hospital. I will be buying the cheap surfboard supermarket brand next time...

I switched to budget brand super ones & they were fine, I just had a real aversion to spending lots of money on them for a weird reason.

Yeah I second the hospital ones too, but I was only allowed to have 2 of them then they made me use mine. I used the Libra Goodnights/Maternity pads which I found good for absorbency but sucky for comfort. I also had a packet of Stayfree ones (the cheap ones) and they were great. I reckon budget all the way cos they dont last long and end up in the bin

please excuse my ignorace and the fact that I'm slightly off topic, but not having been though this before I'm a little lost, I was wondering if someone would hopefully enlighten me to the approximate number of packets pads a person would likely need after they give birth?
I'm sorry if this seems like a stupid question but I'm new at this game and honestly have no idea, of the number I should get.

I think I bought about 4 packs of the maternity ones and they was about 7 in a pack and then I moved onto the super ones once they had run out. I would buy less and then you can always get your partner to bring more in if you think you still need the jumbo surfboard maternity ones.

I'd say 4 packets, then just buy more, or move to super pads as necessary.
I had 6 weeks, then period at 8 (joy -so used pads as too early IMO for tampons with stitches) first time round, at 2 weeks, with period at 4-5 weeks second time round. So you'll definitely use the pads if you bleed a lot!
I really liked those stayfree mat pads (7 in a pack). They're nice and cushy which is just what you want after you've squeezed a pumpkin from your fufu (oh and double layer them for the first day or two - much better).

I was asking my friend the same thing the other day and she recommended getting some depends for the first day or two of bleeding since they are so big and cushiony and also extra absorbent so you dont have to get up and down to loo too often and then move onto the budget ones.......
Not too keen on being the one to go into shop to buy the depends......lol......but i suppose if i do it soon no one will blink since im so obviously about to have a baby soon.........will just make sure i dont chose the isle that has a young pimply faced teenage boy serving me.......hehehe

I had really light PPB first time it was 5 weeks though. FX its not too bad this time either.
As for pads, I used the hospital ones and nicked off with a whole pile when I was discharged then discovered they were the budget brand ones which was great. I had the pink maternity ones that I'd brought before he was born but only 2 packets which was good coz I didn't go through them particularly quickly and didn't get AF back for a year so wouldn't have needed extra.
LOL I remember somebody recommending the adult nappies with a pad stuffed in that but thought it was abit OTT for my tastes

Em - You can bleed for up to 6 weeks, but it shouldnt be really heavy for that whole time. so i would go for more substantial ones to start with and then just go with what you might ordinarily use pre pregnancy......
With my first i was unlucky enough to bleed for 8weeks, and had to get tablets to help with stopping it, but the stupid doctor gave me something that not only stopped that it also helped dry up milk and made me horribly ill, so i had to continue feeding so my milk didnt stop at the same time vomitting........wasnt too good
With second i think i only bled for 3 weeks and not too heavy.
I dont think i will get depends, i think i will just get some budget homebrand ones and then some slimmer ones for after the first couple of days.......two packets should be ample to cover until you get to the shops around a week later.......

I was lucky and only bled for 1.5weeks. I second the super budget pads and wearing two at a time side by side, to stop side leakage. That way your not going to the loo every five seconds. Also got told to change them everytime you fed, so thats something worth thinking about. I found I had too many and still have them and only bought two packs of the budget and one of the maternity ones then had to move onto the ultra thins as I was hardly bleeding and it was hurting me to have them in there, sounds stupid I know lol. Then I moved onto panty liners by 1week.
Also on the libra and carefree packs it has a comparison chart to show you how much they absorb etc

Yeah coz when you feed it helps contract the uterus which can cause abit more bleeding ae??

Yeah it does Babe and it can be a bit painful also. Kinda like mild contractions, but i didnt mind them cos i knew it was things going back into place

for the 1st 24hrs i used the libra goodnight/maternity as they are somewhat thicker
and after the 24hr heavy bleed i used the libra ultra thin maternity pads which i liked better coz i didnt feel like a was walking about with this huge thing betwwen my legs.
with my last baby i decided the pads just werent enough and people had suggested using newborn nappies instead but i thought thats too expensive so i went to the cheap nappy store and got adult nappies which are like a pk of 25 i cant remember how much but i deff felt alot less worry about leaking especially in those 1st few hrs when u have to walk back to ur ward. and blood is still flowing fast. and they arnt visable as a nighty or hospital gown hides them well. i used them for the 1st few hrs and at night. will be getting some more this time.

Poor you rorylex, thats sounds like alot of bleeding.
I bought about 2 packs of the stayfree thick things, and 2 packs of libra ones. The maternity unit gave me like a pack of 5 cotton swab things that were tiny and useless, but straight after my shower my MW made up a nappy thing of those blue sheets of stuff that catch everything when your on the bed, etc and 2 of the crappy mat unit ones which held everything in. I felt like a bit of a dick but it worked well.
After the first few hours I went straight into the stayfree pillows the I think by the time I went home I was using libra ones. I have 1 unopened pack of stayfree and have the other pack still left. Bt I think my bleedig was veeeery light compared to most.

Rorylex - thats awful they make you walk back to your ward also!! after squeezing a baby out you would think you would qualify for a wheel chair!! bugger that for a joke i would feel like my insides are gonna fall out

why would i need a wheel chair for a 25m walk? lol
all my labours were straight forward with no intervention.
and iv been on my feet with in 2hrs of all 3.
i have my shower 1st and get dressed before walking back to ward. i just got annoyed after having my 1st 2 that by the time walked that short distance it was pretty much straight back to toilet again. just aswell i went with absortbent underwear after ds3 as i got stopped by every man and his dog on the 25m walk lol. so what should have been a 30sec walked turned into an hr, which a simple pad wasnt gonna handle.

My midwife has suggested those adult nappies to me also. She said she's had a few people use them and says they're great cause you just chuck them after use (obviously) so no need to worry about ruining your undies if the pads don't offer enough protection.
