I don't know where I've stored the actual letter but it was basically a standard resignation letter which just made mention of the fact that I was currently on Mat leave.
I gave it to them 3 months from when I was due back and so I just stated that I was giving them the 1 month's notice as per my contract so they could get someone in earlier. I don't know if I did it correctly but given that I had already verbally advised them they probably weren't too worried. Just make sure you don't give your notice while you're getting your PPL or that will stop immediately. -------------

I rang my manager and told her personally and then just sent her an email stating it in writing as she had requested. Here is the gist of what mine said:
"I will not be retuning to work after my maternity leave finishes at the end of October 2009, as I am going to continue to be at home with my daughter full time for now" Very basic as you can see but we had discussed a lot in our phone call and in all honesty what else was there to say. |

| Hrmm...ok so this is where I get confused...you have to give 21 days notice of your intention not to return to work from maternity leave...does the 4 weeks notice in your contract override that?? Gah so confusing!! I can't lose the PPL early... |

I think your contract overrides it but def give DOL a call to check.
How long did you arrange to take off initially? If it was say, 6 months then I'd just hold off a bit longer before giving them notice. -------------

Ok, thanks ladies. I rang DOL and it is the contract period  It works out ok with PPL also, as I have 3 weeks of PPL left, but have to give 4 weeks notice, so the "end" of my employment is after the end of my PPL entitlement. I just have to hope they don't want me to work the 3 days left in my notice period after my maternity leave ends!!

Kate, I did an email , so that I could keep a record of it.
I said something like this. It is with regret that I am informing you I will not be returning to work after my maternity leave. I have really enjoyed my time working in that position but feel I need to spend more time with my baby & the cost of childcare for this age is also a big factor. blah blah. I made it sound like I was doing them a favor, as I wanted to stay in the good books for job refs & maybe a job in the future. |

I've got to write my letter & was a bit stuck. I've already said to the boss that I was doing this and my reasons, I just have to follow it up with a formal letter. I like what you've said Jazzy, it's the cost of me going back to work which makes it all a waste of time. | They won't extend my ML. It's all good! I need to get a part-time job for 1-2 days a week (just minimum wage, no biggy) to give us a little bit more leeway, but we are far far better off with me staying at home, mainly because of the 2x daycare fees. The manager asked where I was going, and I said home - he was rather surprised, but I think a wee bit pleased (we haven't ever really got on). |
