hi ladies

I saw a very small article in the paper earlier in the week about a possible link between asthma and folic acid. i have done a wee search on the net and found this article thinking about it it could explain why there is more asthma around today then when we were growing up.

Have a wee read if you are interested. Its worth mentioning that its not pre conception and early pregancncy that there is an issue but later on in pregnancy.

DF read this out if the Southland Times also (I missed it)

For me, it came down to, would you rather your baby had asthma or something worse like spina bifida?

I still need to do more research but at this stage I'll keep taking it (I'm very early on in pregnancy, about 4-8weeks)

It said it was only for asthma if you keep taking it beyond 16 weeks. You only need it take it for the first 14 weeks for neural tube defects, so at this stage it seems pretty clear cut. Take it until 14 weeks - then stop

Yeah that was in the Herald too. Apparently the real issue is 30 weeks plus. They did stress that you should still take Folic acid 3 months prior to and 3 months into the pregnancy.

Luckily my DD is ok and I took Elevit right through. Same with this one but too late now. Probably next time I'll switch to a gen pregnancy multivitamin after the first trimester. Cheaper too

Oh what a crock.....is there proven studies in families with out prior incidence of Asthma?????

I hardly took folic acid...made me to the core for this pregnancy, and it really looks like my son is going to be an asthmatic. Took folic acid with my daughter...she is completely free of wheeze.

I felt so bad that I wasn't taking folic acid as I was scared about the mid line defects that can arise. I'd rather take folic acid than not.
