Subject: The OB newborn/small hire kit

There is now a hire kit of newborn and small Modern Cloth Nappies available for hire by OB senior members. The hire kit contains a mix of prefolds and covers, fitted nappies, pockets and all in ones/twos, as well as a wetbag. Anybody who hires the kit will also be given some microfleece liners and a couple of cloth wipes to keep.

Weight ranges for the nappies in the kit vary, with the smallest being only 2.5kg+ and the largest sized nappy being up to 10kg, with most of the nappies fitting approx 3.5-7kg. There's also a small selection of OSFA nappies to try. There is a list of what is in the kit here: http://tinyurl.com/ohbabyhirekit - http://tinyurl.com/ohbabyhirekit .

The nappy kit is available for a bond of $80 and a weekly charge of $12 a week, plus $10 postage. Pretty good value for nappies and accessories that would be worth more than $800 to buy new. The kit is more than enough nappies for your baby to wear full time.

This is a non-profit kit, for the first wee while mummy_becks and I will be recouping the significant cost we have put into the kit, and once it has paid for itself we will replace stock and perhaps look into making up a medium hire kit.

There will be a maximum hire period of 8 weeks so that lots of people get the opportunity to use it.

Details of the kit and how to book it etc are now on a http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_213573625327886 - Facebook group !

Yup you get the bond back when you return it, unless there's a nappy missing or completely wrecked through anything other than normal wear and tear (hmm we're gonna have to write up a contract of sorts aren't we?).

Consider yourself booked in then Babe and I'll find out when Rovic needs it (if she wants to use if from the beginning or otherwise). We do need a minimum of a week turnaround in between though so we can check everything, wash everything and get it all packaged up nicely with the liners etc for the next person. Even if Rovic wants it from her EDD you should be able to have it for 6 weeks min.

Hmm... I'm pretty close to having enough nappies now anyway I think. But I do like the idea of being able to try a whole lot of different ones. How much is it likely to cost for postage - is it a huge package? (I'm on rural delivery). I presume I'd have to pay that both ways?

I thought you might have been building up your stash

It's a decent sized box, although I haven't researched delivery options yet. I was thinking we would pay to get it to you and you would pay to get it back again (of course if it's going to cost some crazy amount we might have to revisit that). I'm on RD too so feel your pain (might have to use my mum's place as a go between for this!). (Or since you'd be sending it back to Becks, you could always see if she's going to be in Palmy!)

Yes, definitely - I've been working on a little booklet that has general washing and care info as well as specific info relating to each nappy including any specific instructions, cost and where you can buy them from.

Ok, I've had a chat to DH and we are still keen to use this. Probably from about Dec 14th until around about the end of Jan? I could send it back a wee bit sooner if someone desperately wanted it in late Jan or if bubs comes late (I'll be induced Dec 31st) then I might keep it a bit longer if no-one else has lined up for it. I think it'll be a great way to suss out all the different styles to figure out whats going to be best for my expected chubby bubby

I'm a pretty laid back kinda girl and I'll take good care of them Weegee (promise ) so I'm probably an excellent test case for you too

Oh, and congrats on your little bolter Weegee, awesome news

I also wanted to add, the information booklet is now available on google docs if anybody would like to have a look at what's in the kit and what information is provided. Feel free to suggest any changes or correct any errors I have made.

You can view the information booklet at http://tinyurl.com/ohbabyhirekit - http://tinyurl.com/ohbabyhirekit

Let me know if you can't access the document and I can post a link to the pdf version too

ETA: also open to suggestions for nappies we don't have - for example I'm aware the fitteds selection is currently quite sparse! Looking forward to hearing the kit's first review!

Just so people in the lower half of the North Island are aware I will be doing the turn arounds for you. As I travel a lot I can probably arrange to meet you in Palmy (or somewhere close to there) to do the hand over instead of posting it.

Becs I will get in contact with you when I am back in NZ to arrange picking it up from you - it will probably be in Palmy if that is cool with you.

Sounds good Bex. DH works in Palmy so is there most week days.

The kit has so many lovely looking nappies... I'm just hoping my tiny wee girl grows a bit soon, cos so far the prefolds are the only ones that don't leak or fall down! The itti bitti's looked so cute until poo leaked all through her cot

Oh that stinks Becs! How heavy is your wee one? I think the smallest fitting ones in there (other than using prefolds) would be the honey child and the cow print button boo pockets, if that helps. I have some teeny tiny newborn nappies in my stash that might have to find their way into the kit

Thanks weegee. My wee one is just over 3.5kg now (was 3.4 when I last posted) which I see is the minimum weight for lots of the nappies. Starting to have slightly more luck now, but lots of them are still really leaky round her legs

I'll keep trying tho, cos she gets bigger every day

Wow, what a great idea! Could I book myself in from as early as possible after 9 August (that’s my due date) for six weeks? From looking at the list (if I’m reading it right), it looks like the kit won’t be available for a couple of weeks after the 9th, no worries, just put me down when you can. That would be brilliant!

-------------

Posted By: weegee
Date Posted: 10 January 2010 at 11:05pm
Congrats Hopes! The July/Aug booking is only for me, and I do have a reasonable stash of my own, I was just being selfish so I'm happy to drop a week or two off the end of my stretch. I'm guessing from Becs' experience it might be best to wait a couple of weeks anyway - most of the nappies are best tried from about 4kg onwards (JJ was 4kg when he was born so I tend to forget about tiny bubbas!). Although just having a play is educational in itself, even if they do leak I'll update the booking list tomorrow when I'm a little more awake so I don't muck it up

The kit's still available for one 6 week block from the end of May!

Hi! I'd be keen to give the kit a go at the end of May. I wouldn't need it for the full 6 weeks though so someone else is free to have it after me if they'd like? Perhaps a couple of weeks would be good - just to give me enough time to try them all out and see how they all work - I'm new to this whole cloth nappy thing

omg what a great idea! you guys rock! I've been using prefolds with wraps from day 1 (well day 4 when we came home from hospital heh), but she's starting to get too big! I've got two peapod pockets which I love, and a few other things I got on trademe.... but now I know more what I want I still need to purchase some to trial.

This selection looks fantastic, I'm thinking those snap in ones look like a great idea, DH doesn't like how we have to wash the whole thing with the peapod each time ;-0

Anyway - my main point is to say great idea, and anyone thinking about MCN should try get this kit!

Sorry Amy I did see your post but forgot to come back to it! Consider yourself pencilled in for at least a couple of weeks in May/June

ETA - are they for Jaxon? Not many of the nappies will fit him by then If it's just to have a play with the different types I'm happy to try to meet up with you to show you the nappies when they're in between people (I work on the Shore) (or I happen to know the North Shore City Council nappy hire kits aren't particularly busy at the mo, for another/sooner option)

Can I book in to hire the kit from December, DH isn't convinced we should use them and want to convert him.

Due in November thought I'd give myself a few weeks grace before I see what's what.

How long can I hire them for? I could take them after Nic if there isn't anyone in between who wants them.

Waaaay better

Cheaper, cuter, nicer to wear, better for her skin, better for the environment...

But most blokes should respond well to the cheaper!

If it helps, my mum was here for the weekend and she couldn't believe how infrequently I was changing my cloth-nappied bubba. Evidently they are way better than the cloth flats of old, so when *old* people tell you how hard cloth is, take it with a grain of salt.

He seems to think the extra washing is where the cost comes in and the time. I figure I'll be washing most days any way so its another thing to add to the load.
I think we will do a mixture of MCNs and sposies, depending on what we're up to.

One of the guys at his work used them, but he had twins which might have had something to do with it.

Hey Rachael,

Sorry, just saw your post now regarding the sizing for Jaxon! Yes, I agree, he'll probably be too big now. I had hoped that he might have been able to fit into most of them but not anymore! I didn't realise that the NSCC hired out kits - I'll go check that out as they may have larger sizes I could try.

I just saw this - but BAMN has beaten me to it!
But wanted to say - what a fantastic idea. I might be able to get a trial kit from the waitakere CC - don't live there but have a friend who does - but this is a fantastic alternative for those of us who don't live in one of the bigger/more on-to-it council areas.
If you do a second one, let me know, but BAMN and I have almost the same due date...

Bump I just wanted to thank the ladies who have had the kit so far (and Becks too) - all the nappies are still in great condition.

I wanted to ask - since the kit was put together there have been a few changes in nappies available. For example, the new style bitti boo fitteds have arrived, and we have two of the old style ones in the kit - do you think it's important that we have new style ones so people are getting an accurate idea of what they're like? There also seem to be a few new 'must try' nappies on the market, such as the Close Parent Pop In nappies or the Gro Baby snap ins, and a few newish NZ made pockets like the Baby Blush or In A Pear Tree (used to be Baby Harmony, for those that remember them).

So do people have any particular styles they think should be in the kit? (Nappy retailers like Rachael, Louise and Julia, feel free to pop your 2c worth in here - what's popular? What would you really like newbie cloth mums to be trying?)

If you need to refresh your memory about what is and isn't in the kit, go take a look at http://tinyurl.com/ohbabyhirekit - http://tinyurl.com/ohbabyhirekit

I think having at least one of all the popular brands from overseas mentioned above and a few well known NZ brands such as Nudey!Rudey!, Honey Child and Fancy Pantz and this will cover all the popular styles out there.

Agree - all the brands listed above sound good. I think it would be better to have the most up to date styles in the kit but if the changes to a style are minor then I doubt this would be an issue.

I think it's important to have a couple of brands in each style, would be good to see some Ecobubs too

There's a small Ecobubs wool pocket in there and a Honey Child - haven't got any Nudey!Rudey! or FancyPantz though. I'd be quite happy to swap out the older bitti boos for some new ones cos it means the old ones find their way into my stash and there's nothing wrong with them, they're just not as soft or stretchy.

If you are going to be away then I could drop it off earlier so CJ can get it sooner....

Yup we're not planning on going anywhere this christmas

So should we cull the nappies that aren't currently available new here then? Like the swaddlebees or kissaluvs for instance?

Yeah, I reckon cull the nappies that aren't available. I also think it would be worth adding a few of the "cheap" options - such as babyland or something off trademe, and does is have the kind you can get in supermarkets? Or the $20 option from baby factory/farmers?

Just because these nappies seems to have quite a bad rep, but I know quite a few people who say they work great. So it lets you try out the cheaper ones too

I know my baby's a midget, but has anyone had success with a closeparent pop-in on a newborn? I last tried DD in hers at 4 months and I still couldn't get it done up tight enough round her middle to stop the leaks.

Having ones that are easily available would be great.
Also a list of stockists where to buy would be fab.

Bumpy bump. I haven't had time to update the info document, but I thought I should let you ladies know the current contents of the kit. I've removed a bunch of nappies which are no longer available new in NZ - so that's the swaddlebees AIO and fitted, the GAD pocket, the old style bitti boo fitteds and the kissaluvs fitted.

They have been replaced with:
- a new style bitti boo
- a small-medium baby blush pocket
- a pop in dream dri OSFA
- a gro baby OSFA (now gro via - only difference is the gro via has laundry tabs)

(all available from Tweedle so go to Rachael's website if you want more info on those before I manage to update the info doc)

I got a small bottom bumpers snap AIO too but nobody seems to be selling them currently, but I know Tweedle are considering getting them back in, if they do then the bottom bumpers will find its way into the kit too.

ETA I forgot, there is also now a TotsBots EasyFit OSFA AIO So OSFA nappies are now much better represented in the kit

ETA2 Fleur, the info doc has stockists in it too

Awesome Hey, is there anything I'm forgetting to do re hiring the kit? I've just kinda assumed someone will get in touch to let me know who/how to pay and get my address, but if I was meant to do something and forgot, feel free to remind me

Yeah I should have contacted you by now, need to get you to pay in advance and send through your address details. I could actually send it to you now as I'm not using it, but we have one of the new itti bitto tutto OSFM nappies arriving too so will wait til that's here before getting it to you Will PM you now.

The other thing is, postage is really getting to be a significant cost on the kit, so Becks and I have decided we have to add a $10 postage charge... hope that's ok

The nappy itself only once. But they are already washed before you get them. If you are talking about your own nappies that your are buying I would washing them once before using them and depending on the inserts quite a few times before you use them to get them up to the absorbant level.

The washing and care instructions are available here:
http://tinyurl.com/ohbabyhirekit - tinyurl.com/ohbabyhirekit (although I realise it needs a couple of gaps filled in for the new nappies, and there have been a few more retailers pop up that should be mentioned in there).

So, anyone with a small bubba want the kit for the space that's opened up?

Ooh, can I book it for March/April? We went straight into the medium size range with Nat at 12 weeks, so it might be nice to have something a bit smaller (and a range of nappies too) before that 3 month mark (although by the looks of it, this baby's going to be a large one too! ) - that might also save having to post the stash around, if I have if after Fliss?

Hi weegee and becks, with DD being so small I'm not looking to move onto MCNs till she's much older probably the 9 month to 1 year mark at this stage for next summer.
So please pass my hire on to the next person.
thanks

LOL - funny how some months the kit is in hot demand then others nobody wants it!

Yup susyl you can have it after Fleur - I will need to grab it in between though to check everything's there and give it all a thorough wash just in case. At the mo she only wants it for a couple of weeks (although she has the option to go for as long as 8 weeks), and then the next person isn't due til May so heaps of time for you to have a play.

Yep whitewave is indeed booked in for the start of September - possibly both the Bex's can have it for a bit after that? Either of you likely to have a small bubba (in which case you could go later) or do you both breed them chubby like mine?
