hi, I am looking for some opinions or perhaps websites or articles on why you would or wouldn't use a portacot instead of a cot for long term use....any ideas out there?? I'm in 2 about it and don't yet know...

personally I don't think a portacot is as cormfortable for a baby/toddler as a normal cot is. I know when Ella used to sleep in a portacot she never got as good a nights sleep as did in her normal cot.

A portacot is fine short term, but it doesn't have a strong base or good mattress to support a growing spine.

And... it's so low down, picking up a baby/toddler out of one all the time would KILL your back!!!

The back thing like Squishy said.  Also cos they're so low to the ground it's a lot colder down there and usually more drafty.  And the mattresses don't tend to be as thick/comfortable.

Yep I agree with everyone else. When ever Caden has had to sleep in his one he never sleeps well at all.

Jack sleeps fine as has slept in one at least 1 night a week (at mums for half his sleep). I don't think its a good long term solution though.

Having said that, Ava is currently sleeping in a portacot (with bassinet attachment so she's higher) as her cot is in the room she will share with Jack, but neither child is ready for that transition yet.

Aidan slept in his portacot for a few months, we just brought an extra mattress for it and placed a couple of woolen blankets dwon on the floor
he never seemed bother by it

our portacot has a bassinet level so never had the too low down problem and we did eventually get a second mattress for it as the mattress thing with it seemed quite hard. Josh spent heaps of time in it as we traveled to CHCH a lot for a week or 2 at a time and it never seemed to worry him.
