At the moment I'm only taking FA, but pre-pregnancy I was taking a general womans multi-vitamin..

I don't eat a very balanced diet (I don't eat a lot of red meat or fish) but I eat fruit/vege/chicken a lot..

Should I be taking a multi vitamin?

I've only really seen Elevit which seems quite pricey..

What one do you take? Cost? Do you like it? If no, why not?

Not eating red meat and fish isn't that bad for you. I'm a vego so no meat whatsoever.

Blackmores preggo multi is good. But if its just the meat thing then really you only need B12 and maybe iron depending on what veges you eat.

I take none - I'm just on 2 iron tablets daily ($3 ones prescribed by doc, mw's can prescribe them too) and I feel sooooooooooo much better than I did last pregnancy, when I took vitamins!

Both my naturopath and my herbalist/acupuncture told me that Elevit's just a glorified FA and have advised me to switch to Blackmores Pregnancy multi. I buy it from Pak n' Save where it's $19.99 or $17.59 on special.

That link shows that elevit has more iron in it then you should have in a single day, that cant be right can it? Why would a pregnancy supplement have more iron than is recommended?

I take Elevit because it seems to make my MS much better Don't ask why but it does, if I come off it for a few days the MS goes wild and after going back on it for a few days it settles down again. It would probably work with any preg multi vit for me but I ain't giving up a good thing when its working for me - even if it costs a bomb!

I have taken Elevit the entire pregancy and swear by it. It is a lot more expensive than the others but I have found it fantastic!

I usually have a very low immune system and get sore throats very easily. I usually take a multi vitamin called System well but had to stop because it had too much Vitamin A.

When I was taking System well I would notice if I forgot to take it for a couple of days, I used to get a sore throat and just not feel 100%

I was stoked when I discovered that the same thing happened with Elevit so it obviously had enough "good stuff" in it to keep on top of my immune system.

Just depends what you want out of a multi-vitamin...

That's a good point Mindy - I wonder if its because something else in the Elevit tabs cancels out some of the Iron?? I know Calcuim has this effect on Iron if taken together so maybe it is due to the Calcium levels in the tabs. They wouldn't sell something on the NZ market if it weren't suitable for purpose.

Yeah, as long as you eat a balanced diet, they're not essential. I feel absolutely not different whatsoever whether I'm taking a multi or not. I eat a very healthy diet and yet in my 2nd trimester, I still get sick, feel so exhausted I can sleep all day, and suffer from extreme eczema. I taking a lot of supplements and none of them are making a lick of difference.

Sorry, rant ends.

I take Blackmores pregnancy multi, and took a generic FA earlier in pregnancy. Started the multi in second trimester.

I only took FA in the first 3 months am not even taking that now. I eat a huge variety of food so am pretty sure I get all of my vitamins and minerals that way.

If you are eating chicken and have some dairy products - cheese, eggs, then you will be getting enough protein. Your only concern will really be your iron levels. You could always get these checked in your bloods and get some iron tablets if you need.

I took the Blackmores one too with extra FA tabs (generic ones). After I passed 3 months I wasn't so good at taking it and I found that I got cramps in my legs. When I started taking the multi again the cramps stopped!

My obstetrician said I only needed the FA too. If you eat plenty of fruit & veg and some chicken it sounds like you have a more balanced diet than plenty of others

I'm taking generic FA, Blackmores Preg & BF and Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA.

At a guess prenatal vits may have extra iron as by the end of preg you end up with 50% more blood in your body than before. You'll probably need a wee bit extra iron to make it all.

Hunnybunny, you can add things like beans and lentils to your diet to get the protein you'd miss from meat and lots of dark green veggies like spinach and kale to get the iron.
