Hi ya everyone
I am looking purchasing a breast pump and wondered what brand other people have or are considering purchasing. There are a few brands and types out there and I wouldn't know which was the best one AT ALL!! Any advice much appreciated

I used an Avent Isis manual pump. It was really easy to use and very gentle on my sore, raw nipples. I fully expressed all of Ella's feeds with it until she was about 9 months old and it worked great for me.

Hi there,
I would also be interested to know what brands people recommend as I need to start thinking of that myself. A couple of people have suggested the electric breast pumps - I have no idea on this so yes I would appreciate any advice too

i used the hospitals electric one on hire for the first 5 weeks of my oldest early days..... then stopped feeding, with my second girl i used my sisters avent isis for the odd bottle feed and bit of relief! (breast feed my second) and it was great. really easy to use.

We "invested" in an Isis IQ Uno (just over $200 I think). It is manual and electric and also remembers your pumping speed. This may sound weird but I had to try out the pump-just to see what it felt like and found it was really comfortable and not too strong with the pumping (hopefully it will be the same once my milk comes in).
I'm only taking 14 weeks off work and want to continue feeding bubs breast milk, so I needed something that was ok for "frequent use" and for long term expressing.

A lot of people recommend the Medela but I have found that the accessories (bottles etc) aren't as easy to come by and have been told the electric ones can be noisy and a bit too powerful. We had a demo in the shop and the Medela is certainly louder than the Isis IQ (not great if you're exppressing at work).

I've used both the Avent Manual Pump and a Medela Mini Electric one....if you can afford it, go for the electric model. You feel somewhat like a dairy cow but it is so much easier to use. It was really gentle and effective at getting the milk out. In terms of bottles - I used the one with the pump when using the pump and transferred the milk into the Avent bottles for storage. A picture of the pump is at this site.... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Baby-gear/Feeding/Breast-pumps/auction-61371965.htm

I have Avant ISIS Manual pump and tho I havent used it much, when ever I did use it, it was great. Really easy and comfy. the pack comes with two small bottles and bits and pieces to go with it so....its value for money.

What I liked about it was that you pump it straight into the bottle and then close it and put away......cant get better than that!!

I also got the Avent manual one as well and Toni you're not the only one who tried the pump to see what it feels like! I was VERY curious!! Hopefully it feels just as comfy when I have to use it properly.

Thanks everyone The Avent Isis one is the one that I have been the most impressed with (just from looking around) so it is great to get all your feedback.
The hubby was looking at a Avent booklet last night and he was absolutely FASCINATED with expressing!! He asked me "ooohhh can I watch when you do it - it looks soooo cool"!!

Hehe, boys! My hubby was around most of the time when I began expressing and even took over a couple of times when my hands got tired! His friend was really fascinated too, but I certainly wasn't about to let him watch

I've got the avent isis iq uno. I find it really good. It's really comfy to use once you get used to it. Got mine off winkalotts.co.nz which was heaps cheaper than buying it in the shops. It came with a couple of cool packs & a carry bag thing so you can use it while you're out/at work etc.

Hope this doesn't constitute thread-jacking, but I have a question about breast pumps... does everyone need one?  If you're planning to breastfeed, and baby won't be away at daycare or anything, are they necessary?  I suppose if baby is left with the grandparents then I'd need some expressed milk (hmmmm... *begins to answer own question*!).  Well, excuse my ignorance on the matter!  Should I be putting a pump on my giant list of things to buy?

I didn't buy one until Josiah was about 6 months old. I only had one point when I may have needed one with Kiya (she refused to feed off one breast for 2 days), and at the Parent's Centre they hooked me up to an industrially appearing electric one and that was fine... I bought a Pur Manual breast pump when Josiah started refusing to feed off the same side. It's been great for me, and all I needed for the few times I wanted to express.

I'm going to slightly change the way I feed this time, and hopefully I won't have the same problems.

I've bought one in the hope that Madeleine may take a bottle from her dad so he can feed her sometimes, have some bonding time. It may or may not be a success as some babies aren't keen to interchange between breast and bottle but I have also heard success stories so we'll see how it goes.

And there is always the possibility that breast-feeding may not work out (I'm keeping positive thoughts going though but I like to prepared)

If it doesn't work out I figure it's no great loss to be honest.

Ok as I mentioned before, I never did use mine much, reason being, Miss Zaara refuses to take the bottle, dummy....even when I tried feeding her with a nipple shield on.

I bought mine because I was coming back to work after 15 weeks and thought I would express and keep and my aunt can feed her...but NAH!! So I ended up coming home at my morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea to feed her.....man was I tired. After she started solids I only go home at lunch time.

However my little missy has decided that having juice and water from the bottle NOW is fine! Arrgggg

At how many weeks did you begin expressing. I would like to breast feed mostly (if all goes well) but express so my husband can do some feeds etc. I read one book that said to begin expressing right away - does anyone else have any experience with that?
Is the Avent Isis pump that lots of you talked about only manual? Did you all find that a manual one was fast enough to use?
Thanks heaps for everyones advice on this - great question.   I was also wondering about this.

I have just purchased the Avent Isis manual pump, a microwave steriliser and some extra bottles all from www.nappies.co.nz. They have really good specials at the moment and I got some freebies thrown in too. I haven't used any of it yet obviously but bought it on recommendations from another chat forum I visit!
Like others I am hoping to b.feed the majority of the time but would also like baby to be able to take a bottle from dad or gran etc for the times I may not be around etc.

Katie, I first expressed at the hospital on day 2 as my boobs were totally engorged and too full for Ella to feed from. I did both breastfeeding and expressed bottle feeding from day 4 at home and after a month switched to fully expressing.
The Avent Isis is only a manual pump. It works a bit like a spray and wipe with the sucking action when you squeeze the trigger. I actually found it was faster to express with that than the electric, which I found very slow. Just my experience anyway.

Andie, you don't need a breast pump, you can just hand express - which is ok providing you have a good milk flow, can get a bit sore when you are trying to get the milk coming and there isn't much there!

The Avent Isis IQ one is electronic but comes with the thing to convert it to a manual one. I haven't used mine heaps - mainly if I want to go out somewhere & someone else looks after Matt, but I'm planning on using it more once I start back at work. It's definitely handy but I wouldn't say it was essential if you were breastfeeding.

Medula mini electric is great and any old bottle seems to fit on it.
I don't think you are supposed to start expessing until your milk supply has settled so you don't end up with a hungry baby or full boobs. I honestly found expressing such a hassle and it took me ages to get 20mls i have only ever really needed the milk once when i went out and i drank.
