Hi,

I was just wondering. I have heard and read that if you sleep on your back it slows down the oxygen and blood supply to the placenta.

Also if you sleep on your right side.

Ive tried sleeping on my left but always wake in the night on my back again. I just cant be comfortable in one position being my left side.

What are your thoughts on this??

I also heard that sleeping on the back was a no no for the reason you mentioned. I could not sleep on my back, as it was way to uncomfy!

I always slept from side to side. Have you tried pillows under your tummy and at the back? Try putting a pillow between your legs and see how you go.

Sorry hun, but its just one of those things with pregnancy...unfortunately it only gets worse. But just try the pillow thing see how you go!

I sometimes wake on my back but I think that why I wake up cos I can hardly breathe. As you get heavier its really hard to be on your back for long becuase you cant breathe and also Addy starts kicking if Im on my back to long. I sleep from side to side, its not comfy and often hurts to roll over but as Roskana said its just one of the joys of pregnancy. I think its from about 17 weeks they say not to sleep on your back.

Hi there,
I tend to sleep mostly on my left side (always have) and have just recently started putting a pillow underneath my leg for support which has been helping. On occassion I sleep for a short time on my back but usually switch sides.

I sleep mostly on my left and if I wake up in another position then I just roll back. I have heard sleeping on the right side can be a problem but I think it's to do with where the placenta is. I could be totally wrong on that though!

I had this concern ages ago. So asked the midwife and the Doc when I took Paige in for a check up.

My midwife said it was only of concern when you were about 34 weeks on and by that time you probably wont feel like lying on your back anyway because of the weight.

yeah my midwife said the same - she said that by teh time it may cause any damage you will naturally be too uncomfortable too lie that way anyway - she said that my body will tell me when I shoudlnt be lying on my back - makes sense?!!?!

Fully makes sense - it gets uncomfy enough to make it unappealing.  I miss sleeping on my back SO MUCH!  I've started feeling nauseous if I do, and that wakes me (thinking I need to throw up).  So yep, the bod's letting me know that it's just not cool with me sleeping on my back anymore.  Trouble is, I get sore shoulders from sleeping on my side, so always used to go for the back or tummy... alas!

Strategically placed pillows really do help.

I have never liked sleeping on my back,so thats not a prob. I was trying to sleep on my left side cos i too thought u were not meant to sleep on your right side, which was mostly ok, but now I am getting bigger I am much more comfortable on my right side, and I manage to get a pretty decent nights sleep that way. So thats how I stay!

OH Man...I was a tummy sleeper.....thats the only way I was ever comfy and then I became pregnant and after a while I became paranoid that it would hurt the baby.....and then I couldnt sleep on tummy any way. Sucks bigtime!! But its all worth it at the end!

I have tried and tried to sleep on my left side but it just wont happen. End up tossing and turning.
So lie on my right anyways?!!

Must just be a new thing about lying on the left side only as was never a problem when I was pregnant with Paige. Probably isnt really now either!

Interesting... I agree, Kelly, this must be a fairly new thing - I didn't hear anything about this while pregnant with Josiah.

Still, at the moment I sleep best on my left side! At least, until I get cold, then I have to roll over to cuddle Nat and warm up.

Oh yeah jacks mum I'm exactly the same. It's the joint pain that determines how long I sleep on each side for so i don't have a chance to worry about being on the right side too long or anything

Yea i think the left side thing is just getting baby into a good position. I always sleep on my right and then move to my left because i get sore hips and ribs.
