Pink for girls, blue for boys.
Always has been, and across cultures right? Actually no. Pink was once a color associated with masculinity, considered to be a watered down red and held the power associated with that color. Blue was considered delicate therefore something for girls. Since then, however, the change has been resoundingly reinforced by a powerful consumer feedback loop; nowadays girls want pink things because pink things are for girls and girls are marked as girls by their pink things. LOL Joscia...I hated pink, and swore black and blue the girls wouldn't be dressed in pink.....
BUT it's really hard to find cute baby girls clothes that AREN'T pink!! We have some orange and green which we use for Amber (who doesn't suit pink anyway) and Jade wears pink (also means we can look at their clothes to see who is who). |

Actually minik8te that's another rant of mine.
DP won't take me toy shopping anymore because I have a habit of going on angry diatribes about how you can't actually buy anything girl-related unless it is in Pink or even Purple. Hell they even have pink monoploy these days because girls can't handle the real thing. But the 'boys' stuff isn't much better. All army tones of brown and green but at least you get more of a variety than fairy princess or sex kitten. |

Haha I love boys clothes but not a huge amount of style choice where-as girls have more even if it is in one predominant colour. We don't buy many toys or clothes for Jake so I hadn't really noticed how extreme it was but those pictures really show it up ae?! -------------

UGh I hate pink. if I have a girl this time it WILL be dressed in blue. All Ryan's clothes will be used again. Hehe I hate pink too! But unfortunately, at my baby shower everyone knew we were having a girl so we got MILLIONS of pink clothes  so poor Chelsea was always dressed in pink at first as that's all we had (and people would say "wow you obviously love pink" haha)
Now I put her in blue (have a few cute blue things) and people assume she's a boy, but I'm not going to dress her in pink just so strangers know she's a girl  ------------- DD 4yrs DS 2yrs http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

I love PINK...so wanted a little pink thing, but I also love blue, well it my fav color so lucky as I have 3 boys.
I always buy my niece pink stuff, she is 6 & a girly girl, my SIL knows I buy pink to make up for no pink things of my own, so its a bit of a joke. When my last DS was born my SIL gave me a pink teddy you put on the car window...never used it....yet

I'm not anti-pink, but I really like putting different colours on my girl. I do find though, that when she wears yellow etc, unless it's a dress people think she's a boy . I do put her in a lot of dresses, and I've got into making them so they can be any colour I want!
Her bedroom is also almost totally devoid of pink - only the cot sheets are pink (got them 75% off, wasn't going to argue with the colour!). The rest is green and white with animals everywhere. I wanted her room to be 'gender-neutral' (how I hate that term!) cos our kids will be sharing a room, and we don't know what the next one will be. Too much pink would drive me nuts though. |

I used to hate pink, but there are so many pink girls clothes... and Chloe looks cute in them But she has a purple and green themed room, and a green pooh-bear duvet and stuff... there is definitely not an excess of pink in this house. Just a slightly more-pink-than-I-would-like wardrobe. I guess it will be up to her whether she decides she loves/hates or is neutral about pink in the future. But I try not to buy pink/blue girl/boy stuff because I like LOTS of colours!! ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

My aunty used to buy white clothes and dye them outrageous colours- Bright orange, green and yellow! They were fantastic -------------

I think I am slowly getting sick of pink In our house there is definately no shortage. I dont mind pink so much when mixed with other colours (like green) and then you can get different shades of pink.
The only pink Maddi ever wears are Keira's hand me downs, shes always been into the more peachy/reddy colours. Even when I do dress her in pink people still think shes a boy. -------------

I read a very fascinating study once. Males were exposed to a pink/girly environment and females were exposed to a masculine one.
This was done from birth. Any way the study concluded that gender stereotypes are not defined at infancy. Even after 1 year the boys living in a girls environment instantly headed for the trucks and cars. Interesting isn't it |

I don't mind pink but prefer other colours over it. I must say when it comes to DD I tend to go for clothes that are not pink or purple and I like to buy what I consider unisex toys, so we have a combination of trucks, dolls, dinosaurs and animals etc. and if you were to look at our toy box you would have no idea if we had a girl or a boy. I think I would go a little mad if we had that much pink in our house, DD's room is painted the same colour as the rest of the house. I also like to think that what we have toys wise could be used again if we have a boy or a girl next.......maybe I am just cheap!

Oh thank goodness I'm not the only one!! I hate the selection of colours for girls. I'm a huge fan of colour, E wears greens, blues, burgundy, red, purples, pinks, yellow, brown, orange...
We didn't know what we were having so E wore lots of blue until about 11 months (I nested clothing since I had to move over the ditch at the end of my pregnancy). I didn't have a baby shower, and I'm glad we didn't know - as she's a wee redhead there are very few shades of pink that look nice on her. Its even harder to find newborn stuff that isn't blue or pink, I want stuff that's going to suit either so it can last for more than one baby. After watching Juno a realise that boys don't do yellow. I thought pink iphones and imacs was getting out of hand. Blue is my favourite colour and used to always be a girls colour as its associated with Mary.
