* What were you side affects?
* How long did you take it for? and have you been able to keep the weight off?

I don't take it myself and haven't considered it for myself but I know someone who has. The weight dropped off but came straight back once she stopped. I think that if you dont remedy the reasons behind why you have excess weight then its not going to be effective for you long term. JMO

* Can i take it while BFding?

I don't think so - it really kills off the appetite and prevents your body absorbing fat (even the good ones).

* How much did you/or the person taking it loose??

My best friend started on reductil a little while ago, he lost 9.5 kg in 6 weeks so far,

* what else did you do in combination with the reductil??

Exercise - he's going to the gym a few times a week and walking (and he gave up coke)

* What were you side affects?

He forgets to eat, just no appetite at all. He hasn't mentioned any other side effects, but if you consume to much fat it gives the worst tummy ache/ diarrhoea

* How long did you take it for? and have you been able to keep the weight off?

I tried it & know a few who had good results on it.

I found it gave me a racy heart, so stopped it.

I am trying the healthy eating & exercising plan, sick of wasting money on weight loss stuff only to find that when I stop using it I put it back on.

A good friend of mine went on it last year. She was a little crazy on it and would run to work, and didn't feel hungry at all. She said it felt like she was on drugs!
She did get quite slim but has since put it all back on again.

Yeah unless you actually stay on them forever or change the way that you eat and exercise it will go back on (and probably more than you lost while on the drugs as your metabolism will be out of whack).

Unfortunately there is no "quick fix"

What about regular lipo??

I was on Duromine (similar to Reductil) for a couple of weeks before I found out I was pregnant and my doctor talked about ALL of this stuff before he prescribed it. Did your doctor not tell you about this? I know you can't take Duromine when breast feeding, so would assume it's the same with reductil.

My doctor was really good and talked about the importance of making changes (diet and exercise)and that they need to continue after I stopped taking it. His view was that it was to help give me some assistance or will power to make the changes in my life. He suggested I only take it for a couple of months and then start to wean myself off it by only taking it every other day. I was only on it for about 3 weeks and lost 4kgs and have kept it off as my eating habits have changed (I eat healthier and not as much). I've been slack on the exercise side of it though.

I'd suggest going back and talking to your doctor about it more

Oh and the only side effect I had was that I was thirsty all the time, which was great as it meant I was drinking 3-4 litres of water a day

I've heard that some people's hearts race and others find it difficult to sleep.

this is exactly how i see it im in dyer need of a kickstart and loosing a few to begin with will be the motivation to keep going.

Im certainly going to carry on the eating healthy and exercising afterwards also, Iv already started it over the past week and have just started reductil.

The doc i saw was such a w**ker!!!!! he suggested i just read a book on dieting and he said the tablets "effectiveness" is all in the head he reckons!! ...i said to him "thanks for your opinion but i just want the reductil thanks"....

He didnt tell me about the Bfding but my wee poppit is weaning herself anyway

ask your pharmacist if your not sure. Does your doctor know you are breastfeeding? Its a stimulant so can cause increased heart rate and sleepless ness, but Im sure of enough of it will pass through breastmilk to affect your babe. I could have a look for you tomorrow if you like, Im in pharmacy.

It definatly works though, lady came in the other day and had lost 27 kgs!!

PM me if you want me to get a fact sheet on it

I had to giggle at this even though he sounds like a w*nker and didn't mean it this way he was right, as both Duromine & Reductil actually work on the brain to signal that you are full

Here is the http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/Consumers/cmi/r/reductil.htm - link to the medsafe consumer info sheet

Hey BaAsKa, the link that mummydee has put on here is very similar to what I would get at work, and I just looked in a book I have and I wouldnt be taking these while breastfeeding as the medsafe leaflet indicates.

And yes some tummy issues can occur from taking this drug, especially if your diet is high in fat

But it does work, so once you have stopped feeding your bub - then all good and good luck!!

lmao Daphne! ..from the other stuff that my doc said - he was implying that they are useless lolly tablets that make you "think" they are making you loose weight

I took reductil a couple of years ago and it was great. I honestly didn't feel hungry! My only side effect was a dry mouth but that just made me drink more water which helped my dieting.

I lost 10kg in 3 months and when I stopped taking it I definitely found it harder to maintain my weight loss. I managed to only gain 2kg back in the 9 months off it leading up to my wedding but have sadly gained the full 10kg all back in the 2 years since our wedding.

I would love to take it again as it definitely did help me stay on track with healthy eating and reduced portions but no Dr will give it to me as they say Im not overweight enough.

I personally would not take it while breastfeeding though. My only other concern is that as it is a newish drug there is no info on long term use on the body. It can be a help to a quick fix but once you stop taking it you get your full hunger back again and its harder to maintain your weight loss so you'd really need to stay on it long term to maintain weightloss.

I think it is a good kickstart and really does assist in dieting. Plus when you know you're spending that much money on the pills you want to make sure you're not wasting $ by eating badly at the same time!!

Good luck with your decision and your weight loss.

Have never taken it or known anyone, but just thought I would add it is definitely not safe for breastfeeding. Partly because it is such a new drug and they do not do any studies on how these pills affect nursing babies and pregnant mothers.

no worries on the BFdng front as Karma has now weaned herself!

I took Reductil a few months ago and it didn't work for me. I found that myself racing around and doing more. Then I decided to take Xencial. At $150 a pop for 3 months that didn't work either. So now, back to doing the best thing = Weight Watchers!

how do you find WW lisha? hard? any good? whats the cost? is it easy to maintain?

Posted By: Snappy
Date Posted: 23 November 2009 at 9:24am
I did WW a few years ago and lost 35kgs. Well, I started WW, then bought the books, and did it on my own from there. The best thing about WW is you learn about food. Even now I still know point values for a lot of foods. I liked being able to "Save" up my points for a night out. It wasn't hard at all.

WW is good because it teaches you about changing your eating habits rather than just suppressing your hunger like the drugs do. You learn what foods are good and what aren't and about portion sizes and when you should be eating.

wow! kaiz231 35kgs!!! what a legend!!! can i ask how long it took?

Posted By: Snappy
Date Posted: 23 November 2009 at 12:27pm
About 8-9 months I think. I went from a size 18 to an 8-10.
Losing 2.5kgs in the first week was a real motivator for me. If there was something that I really craved I would eat it, then make up for it with a walk or having lots of point free veges with dinner.
