I am sure there are a few of us who have GD and I thought it would be good to start a thread on tip, recipes, things to stay away from that you probably didn't think about etc...
This is my second time having it which I am finding alot easier this time around to get my head around no sugar etc.... One thing I learnt was carbs break down into Glucose which is sugar of cause so puts your levels high - never thought a white bread bun would of sent me sky high in my readings... Fat keeps your levels up longer. If you're having something remotely sweet then fat isn't a good idea too. Fibre brings your levels down quicker (so Burgen bread instead of potatos or white bread). If you want juice I have VitaQuench, it's next to the Raro in the drink area. Dietitian said it was all good for pregnancy and diabetes. I'm living on toast at the moment. I eat anything with less than 10g/100g fat, less than 10g/100g sugar and more than 4g/100g fibre. Drinks are about 2g/100g carbohydrates or less. I'm not the best with my diet though -------------

shadowfeet as long as your levels are where they are suppose to be have the odd naughty treat won;t harm. i had a trumpet m&m as people in the Due in Jan thread were going on about them - thought I will live with the high level afterwards - but i wasn't hgh at all... not that I would suggest making a habit of it. I have not been referred to a dietian this time around (2nd time) last time she said 'Everything in moderation' . if you deprive yourself too much you end up pigging out on it. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

That's my theory Chickaboo. The insulin makes the results normal and nothing much seems to affect them anymore. I was getting crazy results eating healthily, and better results eating normally. -------------

yeah i understand if your body is not producing enough insulin no matter what you do you will still be high- did you end up on insulin ChirsW? I have avoided it last time and looks like i will again - my dad and both his siters have type 2 diabete's and on insulin so I am hoping i don't end up the same - although i know I am very high risk. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I did end up on insulin - the fast acting one - had to take it before every meal, and the amount of insulin I needed increased by the week until I stopped work - 10 days before I was induced. I had it last time so Midwife will prob test me for it again this time. I was just very strict with myself....had pretty much nothing sweet/carbs at all....plate pretty much consisted of small portion of rice/potato, slightly larger portion of fish/meat and then a huge pile of veggies; interspersed with snacks of ryvita or wholegrain toast with marmite, and drank pretty much nothing but water. V boring but they stopped me taking metformin as levels were quite low with good (boring!) diet. Was diagnosed at 28 weeks so got referred to Diabetic midwife at 30, had Toby naturally at 38w3d. He was 2.8kg and diabetes went afterwards. I managed to live with boring food for baby's sake (was what I kept telling myself!) but became quite creative with poached eggs, salads, sardines and a bit of ground pepper and the odd bit of this and that.... ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I was supposed to have been referred to a dietician but instead got referred by accident to a totally different hospital that I didn't want to go to, never ever saw a dietician so just followed my own sensible eating plan and had "normal" readings for 8-9 weeks. Splashed out on a Big Bikkie ice cream DH bought me during week 38 and went into labour next day...! must've shocked Toby into wanting to come out! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

My mum and Grandma both have Type 2 Diabetes so I am always on the watch out.
A good rule as Shadowfeet said is to stick to food with less than 10g sugar per 100g. And as long as you have a basic idea of the Glycemic Index you will do okay - sticking to low GI food like wholegrain bread, basmati rice. |

yeah finding Multi grain bread still makes levels high - although forgot once I was eating honey grain which wouldn't help LOL
Finding when i am sick my levels are on the higher side (sick with sinus infection at present weird but I guess it cause I am not exercising because of it running me down. I see the OB tomorrow to see what birth plan they have for me - Rhyley was a ceasar (my last birth) and because of that they won;t be keen to let me go over (big baby) nor want to induce me so I dont know if I will get my Vbac like I wanted. oh and growth scan next week... can't wait to see our little girl again and see what size she is. Midwife thinks shes on the little side - which by trend I don't do little babies! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Question for those on insulin: I put on no weight in this pregnancy until I was put on insulin. Is it common to gain heaps of weight on insulin? I'm averaging a kg a week since being on it -------------

Yip you do tend to put on weight with insilin unfortunatly, that has been the case for me anyway.

I asked the Ob about being sick and levels being higher when i didn't eat hardly anything and he said cause my body when normal isn't producing enough insulin so when sick it has an even harder time to produce insulin - makes sense.
Sorry can't help on the insulin and weight gain though as not on insulin. ------------- http://lilypie.com">
