how many people that have had twins have a parent that is a twin?

the reason i ask is because DP and I are TTC and BOTH our fathers were twins! i dont know if i can handle twins the first time around- i wont mind them the second time round as i want 3 and DP only wants 2

Both DH's mum and my mum are twins and they are both fraternal twins yet I've only had 1 child at a time.

I always find it odd that people would rather twins second, wouldn't it be easier to have them first time , as you don't have anything to compare it to ?
(sorry , twin mummies, im NOT saying you have it easy , believe me, im not THAT stupid )

Fraternal twins are hereditary. They are caused by the mother releasing two eggs instead of one and both being fertilised. So whether you have twins or not depends on whether you have inherited the twinning gene from your father, and on whether you express that gene at the ovulation that results in conception. The fact that your DP may also have twinning genes is irrelevant - you have no more chance of twins with him than with any other guy, seeing as it depends on your ovulation.

If your dad was an identical twin, there is very thin evidence that that is hereditary (and if so, it is very weakly heritable), so I wouldn't worry about it.

Ultimately, if you want a baby, twins are a risk you'll have to take

Twins aren't that hard =op Infact if you talk to the other twin Mummies here you would find that we would all have another set of twins! The first few weeks are hard but you forget about that pretty quickly.

All the best things comes in pairs!

My Gran had frat twins and by coincidence my partners Dad was a frat twin. Fraternal runs in families and often misses a generation.

This is true for pretty much anyone - we were statistically unlikely to have twins (no family history, no fertility treatment, young mum etc.) and yet surprise - a completely random set of identical twins .

I sooo agree with this. I am a twin so knew there was a high chance of me having twins.
I always said I would prefer to have 1 first for a practice run but in reality having them first time round was great.
"Ignorance is bliss" is our motto

Oh and I would have a second set of twins happily

My sister (not my twin) just had twins recently. 2 sisters down and 2 to go

Also you can inherit the 'multiple egg' gene from both your parents.

I would have twins again too

I have identical twins in each generation of both sides of my family, plus some fraternal thrown in for good measure. Both my parents had siblings who were twins, but are not twins themselves.

There's absolutely no history of twins on my father or mothers side and yet my sister had fraternal twin boys and I had identical twin girls a year later neither one of us had any fertility treatments it was just luck of the draw really lol.

Twins are fab! Much easier than I ever expected. I don't think I would know what to do with a singleton and I would be thrilled if I ended up with a second set! They entertain each other so well, soothe each other and go through almost every stage at the same time. Which I imagine is much easier than two at different ages. Oh my gosh all the awesome firsts! First time they hold hands, kiss each other, Hug each other, highfive each other. The way they giggle away in their bedroom at night and you desperately want to see whats so funny but when you open the door they stop lol. They way they never leave each others side. It's amazing how strong their bond is from day one.

Oh and I agree with the others better to have them first ignorance is bliss lol.

Heres my two grommits holding hands at one day old in hospital.

And now

Love love love the twin pics!! I would love twins (DH thinks I'm mad). Lisa, your girls are beautiful, are they looking a little less identical now (although you probably don't really think they look the same anyway), I think Hazel is in the yellow and Esme in the pink?

Yep Hazel in yellow Esme in pink I think they are quite different for ID twins. Hazel is about a kg heavier and a cm taller so you can definitely see a size different and Esme' eyes are a closer together.

My Grandma is an identical twin, so sweet as she still lives with her sister and they've spent more years living together than apart (not saying I want my boys to follow suit )

Yeh, identical twins can be genetic but my understanding is it goes through your mums side not dads - may be wrong.

I'm so happy that I got twins first as I don't know any different (apart from friends with 1). from other twin mum friendswho have gone on to have more say the next one is just such a breeze and those who had twins second said how much harder it was so I'd opt for twins first!

At first I was 'hell no' but now I would love twins again because they are just so special.

good luck with TTC and cross fingers you get what you want.

Oooh, I'd love twins. Of course, I'm sure it wouldn't be a walk in the park, but I figure other people cope so I could too, and when you struggle like I do to have kids, I reckon two's better than one

You never know, the amount of holes they drilled in my ovaries when they did my ovarian drilling, if I was UTD this month there must surely be some hope!

Having said that, I'd be 124% thrilled with just one, too!!!!!
