Hopefully I can get an answer for this question. As a pregnant woman I have the right to choose my LMC don't I???

I have got my midwife, but she told me that if I am carrying 2 then I have to go under specialist care at the hospital and therefore don't get to choose who I see. Does this then mean that my right to choose my LMC is taken away from me as I have to have a hospital specialist??

Thanks to anyone who can answer my query.

Excuse my ignorance but what is LMC???
And WOW is there a possibility of twins?? Twins run in my DH family but he is a twin and am told it usually skips a generation. I am hoping this is the case for me, especially for my 1st. When will you find out if it is twins??

Lead Maternity Carer (LMC). Yes, this is your choice, howeverin some regions the choice may be limited. If you are put under specialist care in the public health system (eg hospital) you will have a specialist assigned to you. However, not withstanding resignation etc. chances are that you will have this same specialist and their team the whole way through. You can chose to go to another private specialist, though may end up having to pay for the priviledge. I'm not sure where in the country you are (because my preggy brain can't recollect from 5 mins ago when I read the 'where is everyone from' thread) however in Auckland, a lot of the maternity/midwife collectives have specialists that they work with. Try having a phone around in your region to get other opinions...or phone a specialist or the hospital to find out.
Good luck

Thanks Maree. I'm in Palmy. I am also hoping that because I was under specialist care alongside my midwife last time, hat if I do have 2 then I can be under him. I have seen him for gyne reasons privately before so fingers crossed if I do have 2 then I'm be seeing him.

I'm in Palmy too - my midwife told me the same.  It's a Palmy problem, as there apparently aren't any GP's who also specialise in pregnancy/birth, so she warned me that the system is a little sucky here for choices when it comes to multiple births or complications.  I was quite relieved to have it checked that we've just got the one baby on the way, as I can keep my lovely midwife!  If we lived in a town there there are still GP's willing to specialise in that, we'd be sweet as for choices.

Funnily enough, out of all the towns in NZ, Dannevirke has the most GP Obstetricians!! Theres some ridiculously low number of GPs left who do this, and we have 3! Oh 4 now I think.

My midwife (that delivered Maya) doesn't look after twins, but we have created a share-care arrangement with a private obstetrician. It's costing me $2000 all up, including a c-sect delivery if needed for the obstetric cover, and the midwife is covered by the maternity benefits scheme.

If I hadn't wanted to pay (I have Southern Cross which covers it) then I could have been under the hospital team which is free, but I would have had to use their midwives and not my own as she is independent.
