Hi all- I am due to have my second EC on the 15th ish. My first one was very painful and I have asked for a GA for the next one- has anyone had this? As it gets closer I wonder if I should be bothering (its $500 more) but then remember the pain and that whatever they give me did nothing to dull it.
My friend in Oz says her clinic always does it under GA.
Would love to hear from people her who have and what it was like.
Thanks

I have a low pain threshhold and get very anxious, so it was decided by every doctor I saw that the sedation option was good for me (after they'd said wait and see at first but then actually had to deal with me). I'd asked for it from the very beginning as I have a long history of needing sedation for medical procedures.
Anyway, I had sedation, not a GA, which doesn't knock you around so much, and is cheaper. I have absolutely no memory of the event whatsoever, and the recovery from sedation is very quick. The anaethestist cost just under $400 and both DH and I consider it to be the best money we spent during the whole process and would do it again in a flash. DH held my hand during EC when I was sedated, and apparently I was moaning and moving with the pain, so I'm so grateful I don't have any memory of it.
I have to add that it won't make any difference to the recovery after (I had referred pain later), but as far as the actual procedure goes, definitely well worth it. I think sedation is a much better option than GA. It's the same (or similar) to the one they use during dental procedures i.e. the patient is responsive, but has no memory after.

Hi Hope
I know what you mean. i am about to embark in ivf number 3 eeeek.
Both times i had sedation (i think) but did not cost me anything under public cycle. When i got their they gave me a small tablet to swallow, then they put a needle into my arm so they could administer more drugs. I remember feeling when they injected some drugs whilst i was in theatre i quickly became woosy but i did feel the pain which i hate to say was quite painful.
Itchy Feet - did you have what i had? or did you have something stronger?? I am with FA in hamilton so if their other options i would really like to know..
I have opted not for GA as i have been told takes a lot longer to get over.
The funny thing is you seem to quickly forget the pain afterwards.. weird huh, must be bit like childbirth aye???

Hi ladies
All the very best of luck for your up and coming cycles! I had heavy sedation at FAH for my second IVF cycle, and honestly swear by it!! I was so much more relaxed and did not fight the procedure - like I did the first time when I was in sooo much pain! Recovery is very quick, and you do have a little referred pain afterwards.
My hubby held my hand, I didn't feel a thing! However, my body did naturally move/twitch when in pain.
Fortunatly the time what I had heavy sedation my eggs were better quality, no blood collected and I had embryos of much better quality resulting in a BFP! Now 18weeks.
All the very best, think the heavy sedation cost around $350.00.

Hi huys- thanks so much for your advise- I called FA Hamilton this morning and am going to have heavy sedation- they said some days they cant get a anaesthetist though which freaked me out!!
DH is having TESA on Friday- poor thing, but VP reckons might get better sperm this time- he has also been taking menevit for 6 month. We had 7 eggs and only 2 embys last time so they reckon that this might help!!
Fingers crossed- thanks heaps!

Mtjt- I think that you just had the normal sedation they give you- not heavy sedation, I had normal the first time and it didnt do a thing- hurt alot, maybe you should request it this time. I'll let you know how I get on!
