I'm having one in about oh.. 3 hours from now.
Has anyone had one of these before? Does it hurt? It's like a balloon that is blown up inside you causing your cervix to dilate rather than using the gel (which I'm not allowed due to previous c-section)
They said it could take up to 24 hours to work!
Better go and buy some magazines and crossword puzzle books to do while I'm there!
I feel sick!!! Hopefully it will go away once I'm there, but all this waiting is making me nervous and nauseous. And I'm having serious cramps now!

Not sure about this kind of induction, but just wanted to wish you good luck for today.
Fingers crossed you might be like me - when I went in they found I was actually a few cm's dilated already so were able to skip the first step and just break my waters to get things going

Ooo thanks Sterryn, I am hoping that the same thing happens to me and I get to skip some of it. Surely all these niggly pains have been doing something for the last nearly four weeks!!
Will be texting my text buddy as soon as he's here, and I think I have your number as well so will send one to you too.

Fingers crossed it all goes well. I had the OB talk to me about it and then when I asked my mw she had never heard of it so that was reassuring! However I didn't need it in the end as he made his own entrance, it did sound interesting though

Gosh I just had a google about it and it sounds rather time consuming! I guess it might be a bit sore seeing as they have to pull on it to help the cervix to dilate? Take those books etc for sure! Fingers crossed you're already a bit dilated and they wont have to do it!!

must say it sounds yuck! i only ever had the gel... and that doesnt sound as invasive as the foley thing. if you are already dilated they may just go the gel or possibly the synto ( i think they can do that too to get things going if you have dilated by yourself.)
i dont think renee had either in the end.

yeah I would think if you are already dilating they should be able to pop your waters without needing to do the catheter first.

I ended up ringing and chatting to my midwife
she said any dilation after 1cm she doesn't think you can get it as it has a higher chance of falling out? she wasn't too sure though.

last check - monday was I sitting at 3cm but stretchable to 5cm. my midwife said they probably won;t even consider the foley catheter at this dilation but then she thinks they probably won't even give me the gel. they will just break my waters if needed

Hey Trish,
I didn't end up having one after all and I wasn't induced as while examining me for induction, they did a stretch and sweep which put me into labour about two hours later.
I was already 4CM by the time they checked me so it wasn't needed, but the specialist who was doing it said that it could have only worked to dilate me to 3-4CM, and between 0 and 2CM they could use it.
I was told the only discomfort was that the end of it was taped to your thigh and you could feel a bit of pulling.
Apparently it's really good as it's safe to use for everyone and carries no risk of infection, and also prevents your uterus from being overstimulated as the gel or drip can do sometimes.
Once it falls out, they will break your waters.
I hope that baby comes very very soon for you Trish! Can't wait to see pictures of her! I bet she is just gorgeous like both your boys.
ETA I posted at the same time as you. Great that you won't need the foley cathetar! When I was at 4CM, all I needed was a stretch and sweep to get me going!

I had a date of the 9th for the Gel or foley to be placed, then I have to be back on the 10th for them to break my waters
but the midwife who did my s+s on monday said at fridays appointment she has to 'assess' me again and talk to the OB's as if Im still at 3cm or more I will just go in on the Wednesday for my waters to be broken
the OB said either way bubs will be here for her DD

Oh exciting..FX she comes sooner though!!! Gosh how nice they let you go home I think my labour would have progressed much quicker if I had been able to go home after the gel...

its the new protocol apparently, go in to labour ward for gel or balloon placement then they send you away and are told to be back by 7.30am the next morning
guess its to save beds lol
thanks, I hope she comes sooner rather then later! thought it was happening yesterday nope woke up today with nothing :/
