It looks like baby will be born a little on the big side, estimates puts him around 9 pd / 4kg. Assuming they are accurate I would like to know what your experiences are with delivering big babies. Did you need pain relief or forcepts or c sections. O and does it matter if you are bigger or smaller built yourself?

my biggest baby - 9pd 12 (or 13 i can never remember) was my easiers birth! and he had a huge head - 39 cms. he came out in five pushes!
i dont think size has anything to do with how easy or hard it is, more their position and yours possibly too!

I agree with Bizzy. It is mostly about position of the baby more than size.
I ended up in a C-Section with my son who was 8pd8oz or 4.1kgs because of the way his head was presenting. He was posterior and was never coming through my pelvis as I am a small bone structure (underneath all the layers of fat ).
BTW, they are normally around 600-700grams off with the weight estimates in late pregnancy. Anthony was estimated to be 10pd5 oz over a week before he was born.

my friends mum is tiny and she delivered a 10.5lb and 11.5lb baby will no troubles at all. apparently heavier babies are slightly easier since gravity is on your side.
the scans can be pretty inaccurate. i know ppl who have been told to estimate 10 or 11lb babies to have 8lb babies, my baby looked to be about 7lb and he was 8lb4oz.

When my DD1 was born the lady I room shared with the first night had her 11lb 13oz boy by c-sec, but this year an acquaintance of mine had a 5kg baby girl with a home water birth

size isn't usually a problem, its how they present thats an issue.
I had a home waterbirth with my daughter who was 8pd15 on her due date & it only took just over 4.5hours from first pain to pushed out. No forceps, no pain relief, no grazes, tears or anything.
Oh & I'm 5 foot 1 so was a pretty big baby for my size. All my kids have been over 4kg so no doubt this next baby will be too LOL

my biggest were 10lb 4oz and 10lb they were both home water births and my 10lb 4oz baby was the easiest out of them all. I agree all about positioning, I recently had a 8lb 2oz baby that turned into an emergency c-sec because of the way his head was.
good luck

I've had a 6lber and a 9lber (and 2 7lbers) and the only real difference was the "ring of fire" with the bigger baby was a bit more stingy, altho that could also have been because she was my first baby.
I did have an epidural with her, but that was nothing to do with her size - she was posterior so I had a long labour. Didn't need forceps or anything like that.

I am small (BMI was only 14 ) and my 9lb 1 heffa came with no pain relief and came out with an arm up with her head.
Only prob was the 3rd degree tear but I think that is because of the arm thing.
It is possible to get a big baby out if you are small!

Just quickly - my boy was 9 lb 3 oz with a 39.5cm head. I had no drugs or gas, delivered him naturally . I did tear but that was cos he came out with his hand on his face, rather than his size.
I'm 174cm tall.

My DS was 9lb 8oz, he was in the wrong position and couldn't come down very well and I ended up with an emergency c section.
Its not to do with size at all, its position. My mum had 4 big babys all naturally

I'm 164cm and had a 9lb 4oz-er. He was ventouse for failure to progress in the second stage (head was not in a good position and I was k-nackered by then). Nasty episiotomy though

I delivered a 9lb2oz baby (36.5cm head) naturally. I did tear but not too badly (2nd deg) and healed really quickly. I'm 172 cm tall.

Thanks guys, I'm 157cm and a size 8 (well I used to be before I started packing on the baby pounds) It looks like the tearing is sort of a theme, ouch. Well no one said it would be a walk in the park

In case it makes you feel any better about the tearing - again, the size probably doesn't matter - I am both taller and bigger than you and delivered my tiny 4lb 2oz baby naturally but still had a wee tear (only a couple of stitches). I healed just fine too.
I know of a lady here who had a 5kg-er last year. Natural hypnobirth as well! Apparently he was one of the biggest babies to be born in Singapore last year

To be honest, I didn't even notice tearing at all. Even afterwards as it was healing, I more noticed the bruising from 1.5 hours of pushing!

this has been a very interesting thread to read ladies thanks! i have been on the big side the whole way thru... so much so that people were asking if i was sure that there was just one in there or if i was further along than i thought i was haha it has been worrying but i guess fingers crossed she is in a good position and doesnt cause mum too much grief on the day!

oh this has been a helpful thread to read. DD was prem at 31w and just under 3lb so a very small bub to push out and I found it quite hard pushing because with the epi I couldn't really "feel" anything. This bub however is looking to be full term and on the bigger side so I was starting to stress about how on earth I'm going to push her out being only 5ft tall and a petite size 8 pre-pregnancy. Reading these posts it sounds like it might not be that bad after all. Only prob is I still have the horror story my mum told me about my birth - 2 weeks overdue, only 7lb 11oz and my mum (also a petite 5ft) had trouble pushing me out, needed ventouse AND forceps and tore something bad. And I was her first! Still, it can't have been that bad because she did it again 3 times!

Just wanted to say that everyone I know who tore during labour (and I know two women who had severe 3rd deg tearing) have said that they never even knew they had until they were told afterwards (or realised they were being stitched up) So don't be too worried about that end of things

My first was 9lb 1oz but was a kneeling breech so had to have an elective c-section, but my second was 9lb 8oz and I didn't even get to the pushing stage as he wouldn't come down and I didn't progress past 6CM.
I am 5'6 and at least a size 16. My mum had no trouble delivering two babies naturally, although we were both 7lb something. I don't know what is up with my pelvis, but Jamie couldn't get out of it!

I was 160cm and 55kg before pregnancy. Bubba was 9lb 4oz. I was induced because Jody didn't engage before labour (therefore didn't make me go into labour) but the rest was all pretty standard.
I also had a tear. Didn't need forceps or anything though.
I wish now that I had really studied the Pink Kit to get different ideas on how to avoid tearing.
The BIG issue I had with carrying a big baby was my back was soooooooo sore for a long time afterwards. I couldn't even pick Jody up for the first week or two. I think it was partly due to dropping that weight and losing all the core support for my back. But I think the main thing that munted it was birthing on my back with my legs up. I *really* regret not being a bit more pushy as to what *I* wanted rather than what was easier for the midwives.
Next time I want a water birth.

I had two 9lb babies and had no issues pushing them out.
Janaya basically just slipped out I had an epi with her as I was in labour for 30 hours and needed some sleep.
Jackson was out quick smart as well, I had a semi water birth (Jumped out to push) with a bit of gas through the transition period. I got a small graze internally with both of the births and that was it.
I'm 168cm and was about a size 10 prior to having Jackson.

Gee........is anything over 8.5lbs considered 'big' these days? LOL I thought that was 'average'.
DS2 was 3.9kg(8lb 7oz) and his head was 37cm and I actually found him EASIER to get out than his brother who was 3.2kg (7lb) with a 34cm head. Both mine were fairly quick and DS2 was a home water birth........I did have a tear but it didn't need stitching though the midwife did offer. I barely did any pushing with him, in fact pushing is down as 9 minutes and I think it was about 3 active pushes before he was out; not that any of us realised until DP commented on something he saw and looked down and there was his head. PMSL
I agree with the others that positioning is EVERYTHING, no matter how 'big' or 'little' they are.

Lol, me too
Ollie was 8lb 13oz with 36cm head and I only had a graze with him from his hand (I did end up with a small tear later on from the doctor having to remove his placenta though).
Lilia was 9lb 2oz (or maybe 3oz) with 34cm head and I had no tearing or grazing with her.
Interestingly a friend of mine had 11lb 2oz and 11lb 3oz babies at home in the water with no tearing ... they were her 4th and 5th babies though.
Agree with what the other ladies have said about it being more about baby's and your position during birth.

Me, being a tiny 5ft 0, had a 8lb9 and a 9lb6 no problems, a wee graze with the first one and the second one was fine. Infact I thought the second one's birth was so easy I was really surprised when I found out how big she was.

Yes, a girl I know who is not huge (reasonably tall but thin build) had an 11lb 2oz first baby at home with no pain relief or tearing. She said it was hard work but just fine.
