Well... I found out on Christmas day why DD's father is 4 month in arrears with child support. Hes in prison. Do prisoners get some sort of income? Are they required to pay child support?

I actually have no idea but I feel like they do not get an income or if they do its like $9 a week. So I assume they wouldn't pay child support. However I not actually know. Have you looked at the IRD website? It probably says something.
What a sucky time of year to be down on money

From what I understand is that the only time you don't have to pay child support is if you are in prison or long term hospital.

Hmm it says on the IRD website that if hes in prison for longer than 13 weeks he can APPLY for an exemption from paying child support. Well this sucks. Its not like its DD's fault that hes in prison and shes the one whos going to miss out.

You would think the least they could do is let you know. I mean how are you supposed to budget?

I think if the person is not earning a wage then they only have to pay $10 approx a week.
So really unless the person paying CS is in a good paying job you can not bank on receiving a good steady amount, & your ex does not sound reliable. Unfortunately.

The minimum C/S is about $58 per month but there is a clause where the person pays nothing if they are in prision and I think long term hospitalisation.
If he has paid some money this year and no longer has an income he may have overpaid the amount he would have had to pay for a full year based on his new income, so have nothing left to pay this tax year.
The IRD website will have all the information though.
