Hi All

I am a SAHM to DS, who is nearly 2 And I need to get a bit more active!!

I reckon I probably achieve my 10,000 steps a day but most of them are done at toddler pace I used to take DS out for loads of walks in the buggy but now he wants to do the walking! The only time I have available for just me to exercise is before DS gets up (bearing in mind he is up at 6am) or after he is in bed. As tired and lazy I feel at these times I think they are my only option. I would probably just go for a brisk walk. We don't have money in the budget for the gym and although I would love a Wii Fit that will have to wait until next Christmas probably.

So what do you guys do? I am keen to get a bit more active before this next bubba arrives because if I don't, then it will be another 2 years before I address it again

I started exercising at stupid oclock when we first had kids as that was the only time there was someone in the house other than myself.

So before I started back at work .. I would get up at 5 and go out for a walk and be back before the kids woke up. This usually coincided with when Elias woke and needed a feed anyway, so it worked out really well.

Now that I'm back at work (and in training) .. I get up at 4.30 am and Im at the gym to do cardio by 5am so that I can get to work on time (my husband is at home with the kidlets)

We also invested in a treadmill for home, so I can usually fit in a cardio session at night when the kidlets are asleep (because my husband is usually having his gym session at that time).

Thanks Lilfatty - I think the morning is the best time to start it. I know it will really suck initially but you get used to it It would help that hubby gets up at 4am to study so he would say that 5am is a positive lie-in

4:30am.....shudder.

there are some kiddy-friendly activities you can do that get the heart rate up. I jog around the house. it looks dumb, but oh well. Kite flying is great and getting a bubble machine and running around to catch all of those burns calories too.

Does your DS still have a nap in the day? Maybe you could grab an exercise dvd frome the library...or look up some exercise clips on youtube and try get some cardio in that way.

That's what I would suggest too...or if he would sleep in the buggy you could go for walks while he sleeps.

The Youtube suggestion was what I was gonig to suggest too... Ive started doing it with preggy exercises. Much better than trying to go to the gym, and if you have 3 lots of 10 mins you can fit in a 30 min session. And its easy to find videos that are at your level/pace/difficulity and ones with trainers you like....

Thanks for the ideas DS does still nap but I quite like being at home for that otherwise I can't get any jobs done at home He probably would sleep in the buggy though so would be an option once or twice a week. The exercise video from the library would be a good idea though. I'll see if I can find anything that is low impact

Theres loads of workout dvds on trademe which work out really cheap. I've picked up a few for between $10-20 ea so I've got a few to choose from depending on what I feel like doing that day. I've seen plenty of preggy ones.

Yeah I always did DVDs the kids think its hilarious and would climb all over me but it did the trick. Swimming is also a good one with a toddler, I found just playing in the water and doing gentle laps in the playing pool with them on your back uses up quite a bit of energy.

Put on a wiggles DVD and dance along with EVERY track.....its actually quite hard. i think they have an untapped market for exercise DVDs
