We had a Nanny who's now quit. I was going to wait until the boys turn 2 before putting them into Childcare but I'm thinking I'll just start now at 16months old so at least we have reliable childcare. So, for those who have their children in Childcare centres...
What age did they start and did they get sick all the time and have you had to take heaps of time off work? My boys have had 3 colds in their life and I've heard nightmare stories about children being sick all winter when they enter childcare. ------------- 3yr old gorgeous ID twin boys. |

Thomas started daycare when he was 9 months old, hes now 1.5. He goes to a BIG kindy - theres on average 10 babies/toddlers in the nursery at one time, and god knows what else in the over 2's. Theres been all sorts of weird and wonderful bugs and diseases etc going round since he started, but because the kindy is really onto it with sending a child home when they get the slightest bit of the runs/temp etc he's not really been sick too much! He's had a couple of colds in winter, but nothing so bad that hes been off kindy for too long.
I luckly dont work, so it's not put me out at all by having to pick him up etc - but thats just part of normal kindy life really. firstly from a teachers point of view .....about 50% of the kids get sick for the first few months and sometimes up to 6 months really.. doesnt seem to be any reason why why not secondly from a parents point of view E started at 1 year and has had hardly any issues at all.. i dont work but have had him at home like 5 times in that time? ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

My son started daycare around 11 months (he is now 20 months) He has hardly been sick at all so have hardly had to take time off. I have had to pick him up twice for high temp and it was around when he was teething and his last daycare (changed recently) wouldn't give pamol.
At his new daycare he got a runny nose in the first week (not enough to stay home) but it cleared up quick and has been fine ever since. He loves going. On the other hand, my friends son has been sick heaps with lots of ear infections and tummy bugs and first few months had so much time off but now ok. So it may be luck of the draw, but I think my son has a good immune system and I also think that if the daycare clean their toys regularly that also helps. I forewarned my work that he may get sick in the first 3 mths a she gets use to the new environment etc (just so they would be more understanding) but didnt have a problem luckily. | I think starting in summer weather would be easier than winter. Daniel got hand foot and mouth and 2 colds since hes started. He only had to come homr when he had hf&m not the colds. But our daycare is also a fairly new one and very clean |

Bummer that the nanny quit 
We've definitely been off a bit. Daycare is fine about clear runny noses but the hint of hand foot mouth or conjunctivitisis and he's out. He's had a number of colds that he's been off with. I figure he has to develop him immunity sometime and it's either now or in three years or five when he starts school so it's just the way it goes. Luckily work is very flexible but it's still a pain! ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

Thanks guys, I'm so much happier for reading the positive posts but will be prepared for the worst. Since I have 2 bubs they'll most likely catch everything because if one doesn't the other will and then the other one follows latter. I've already visited the daycare and LOVED it, clean and modern with excellent carers. They allow clear runny noses but temps etc are a no no.
Good point about starting in summer, I didn't think about that so hopefully it helps build up their immunity a bit. Starting my own business so can only ask myself for time off  but will make sure there are measures to cover work when required.------------- 3yr old gorgeous ID twin boys. |

Thats a big shame about the nanny, don't you just hate that!
Harry started daycare when he was 3 months old and got sick in the first week. Alex started at 5 months and I would say over the time they were in day care they had the odd sick day here or there. We immunised them against Chicken Pox so didn't have to worry about that. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I definitely recommend starting in summer, when there's less bugs around. My DD didn't pick up any bugs until the winter (started in Feb), but I don't think she got any more colds than her non-DC buddies. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

Caleb started when he was 2 1/4 and spring time. He's got quite a few snotty noses but not got really sick. It is probably best to start them in summer when there are not too many bugs going around so they have a resistence when winter comes. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Ethan has only got sick twice since starting day care and both times (chicken pox and slap cheek) came from other places and not DC. No colds yet, and he's been there for coming up 6 months. ------------- Captain Chaos (5) & the Trouble Monsters (2!)

Cian switched from homebased care to daycare at about 10 months (i think!) and hasn't been any more sick than he was before... It's so interesting to hear these, I suppose it's like with anything you always hear the worst stories. Had a natter with DH and he's not convinced on doing daycare and still wants to get another Nanny but that's another story altogether. ------------- 3yr old gorgeous ID twin boys. |

Jackson started in winter and has had a fairly constant stream of runny noses and mild coughs, but hasn't had much serious stuff. He got conjunctivitis once and a temperature once.
I have stayed home from work one day in the last 4 months (excluding my 3 week stint at starship of course!), DH has had one day off and we've called on the MIL for two days. Bit of a pain, but I've been told on the positive side, he should never get sick by the time he makes it to school!! Hopefully you've got an understanding employer. I can see how having two would make it hard. On the positives for us, Jackson has thrived since going to day care, loves it and gets heaps of attention. He is experimenting with food there, does lots of messy and wet play, has had no nappy rash or any major injuries. I am happy! |

| My two started this time last year at 19 months and 3 years old. They have been sick a wee bit but no more than any other years. I have these chewable immunity boosting tablets from the health food shop, not sure if they do anything but they aren't doing any harm either. |

Poor Jake was sick constantly at first - he started at just over 10 months at the start of winter - spent 4.5months sick off and on the whole time (3xs in hosp - he had pneumonia twice, bronchiolitis twice, 3 ear infections, 2 chest infections, slapped cheek, constant coughs and colds, tummy bug where he lost 15% of his body weight etc etc) .... so at that point a pead told us to take him out for at least a month .... we moved daycare and hes barely been sick since (chickenpox and a couple of colds but not one temperature or hospital visit!).

My ones have been sick constantly all winter, it's sort of like one week on, one week off - but Dunedin is really bad for winter illnesses, especially when all the students come back from holidays and bring bugs back from the whole country. But I've heard that 3 years things start getting much better - that seems to be the trend down here. ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

Luke and Zavier both go to daycare, they started in September. And boy do they LOVE it. I find it's better than one on one, because they are around other kids of the same age, who may be more advanced, and they want to do that too. They learn so much more off each other. I found this with Joel too. He really wanted to be doing what the other kids did and he was/is so advanced now for his age. They have had a nasty tummy bug but apparently that was going round, and maybe one day off since for cold but otherwise it's great for them. -------------

You know as a teacher and mum every daycare is different.
My little girl started at my work/daycare at 3 and a half months and we have had about 2 days off for her two for me (I got a throat infection and tummy bug, but kept her at home with me). Our centre states if you have conjunctivitis you can attend if you have drops or cream for the eye. If vommitting or diarrhoea you must be at home for 48 hours. Colds and sickness it is a good idea to keep them off. Our centre offers reduced fees for 20 days in the year if your child is there 5 days, this is for holidays, if they are sick etc. They charge a holding fee of $2. If you want I can pm you more information. I know its hard being off work, but if they are going to be sick it is usually the first year, and some kids who don't attend daycare and head off to school they get really sick at school while the daycare kids are tough cause they have been through it. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Andrew started at 5 months and didn't get sick for quite a while. Josh was 16 months when he started and didn't get sick for months and he started DC in the middle of Winter in Waiouru. I have seen something that says when you start something new for the first time you usually get sick often. Be that children starting DC, starting a new full time job. It happened with me when I started working full time for the first time I was sick quite often in the first 6 months I was there. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |
