We have 2 dogs that CONSTANTLY rip through the rubbish!! DH just this minute found them tearing up everything out of the wheely bin!!!
they are both over a year old and are overweight according to the vet!! Why are they doing this!!??? How do i stop them!!?? DH wants to get rid of them tommorow because hes had enough!1

Can you keep the rubbish somewhere they cannot get to it, the garage or shed maybe? I have seen people with padlocks on their wheelie bins and wondered why but maybe thats the reason.
Our dig does not get into our rubbish but its in a wheelie bin and theres just no way he could get in there. But if we were to leave it where he could get to it then I know he would get straight on in there. To them it smells irresistibly delicious

There are some dog repellant sprays avaiable. Which you could spray around the bins. Just ask at a pet shop.
I guess the only other thing to do would be to train them to stay away. Do a stake out and when they even think about getting into the rubbish tell them "no" in a stern voice, block the bin off and tell them to go. When they do leave it alone praise them, but if they go for it again move them away from it. We did this with our dog and see doesn't go near the rubbish now. We got a bin that snaps closed so that she couldn't get into it, if there are plastic bags she just thinks its far too tempting! Some dogs just can't seem to help themselves. In the end it was the only option - they generally aren't trying to be naughty, they just can't help themselves. The padlock on the wheely bin sounds like a good idea in this case! ------------- ~Cassie~

yeah I would just padlock it or put it out the way, or buy one with a lid. We have a snap down lidded one with our dog food in, so that we could store it in an area where the dogs are. Mine would both tear into bags given the opportunity, it's just normal behaviour for them, yes you could train them but that is likely to take some time and it's easier to just make it so that they can't physically get to or get into the rubbish. -------------

| I know it sounds crazy, but if you catch them in the rubbish, pick it up and chase them with a xena like yell and the rubbish bag shaking! And don't stop chasing and yelling until they hide from you. Do it everytime you catch them. Within a week they'll be too scared of the evil twin to go near it. |

You could sprinkle pepper on the big....like cover it. We do that with our rubbish bags and it seems to deter cats. -------------

Because they are dogs and they are bored! Treat them like toddlers, keep anything out of their reach that you don't want them to have. We have two dogs and there is no way that we would leave them alone with our wheelie bin, that is just asking for trouble!

Our dogs can't get anywhere near the rubbish but we have loads of dogs in the neighbourhood and so we have a private bin collection (our local rubbish is collected bags $2 a pop and a PITA every time a dog tears through them) and have a lidded wheelie bin. If you have the same sort of thing I know the dogs can push them over so maybe try a big concrete brick on the lid or securing it somehow.
I think if the rubbish is well away from where they can get to it then that will help, but also they may be a bit bored. I get the dogs those big beef marrow bones and one of those will keep them busy for hours. Also dog toys etc are fairly cheap at novelty, 123 stores. If they are too busy doing other things they will leave the rubbish alone :) Also a good walk every day will leave them less energy for mischief

Of course they might do it not matter how many toys, exercise or training you give. My dog is a pig in a dog costume I swear, she will eat anything and the more rotten and gross the better, we had to raise the compost heap to stop her getting on that and when DH dug out the old stuff and buried it whilst building the new one she dug it up and ate the rotting grass clippings Then came to me for cuddles smelling so so gross. And on walks if she sees horse poo or a dead possum/rabbit etc she can't help but have a little roll in it unless I see it first and tell her to leave it.
She has heaps of toys, bones to chew, walks and is an obedience dog so she gets lots of training to work her mind as well, she is just gross though. Yesterday she ate cat sick in the time it had taken me to go get something to clean it up -------------

cuppatea that is EXACTLY what our dogs are like!!!! they even dug up our poor puppy that passed away and was burried WAYYYYY under!!!
We always make sure the lid is down on the wheely bin for the stray cats that keep getting in . Our bin is in the front and the dogs are in the back but 1 of the dogs in particular will bust through the fence and do what ever he can to reek havoc!!
