Subject: no capitals. bothering anyone?
Date Posted: 23 January 2010 at 8:52am
i was lying in bed last thinking (as i do) and i realised that pretty much everyone on here types very properly with capitals and everything whereas i usually just can't be bothered making the extra effort to hit the shift button.
so what i was wondering is......is it bothering anyone? would people like me to start using capitals? i can you know, i'm a clever girl

Sorry, but I do find bad grammar annoying. Just one of my pet peeves. Although, no initial capitals is not as annoying as really bad spelling.

I am sure there will be people that will get upset but dont let it bother you too much. Half of the time I type with one hand and busy with a child or feeding Andrew so bit difficult to type capital letters ect.

no capitals doesnt really bother me. Bad spelling does, but typos dont. At least you use full stops and commas.....that would REALLY piss me off because it makes it hard to understand.

It doesn't bother me online at all, it bothers me in person or in print though.

The only reason I use capitals etc is because I type quite quickly and I'm used to pushing the shift button as a force of habit. It would take a long time for me to re-learn no punctuation!

Bad spelling annoys me so much as does no punctuation, but I'm not about the get pippy over it on here - I'll have enough kids to teach proper grammar too at school that I can take it out on them

No caps doesn't bother me, because most of us are probably typing while holding baby, bad spelling I can handle, some people just can't spell.

This however does...

when peeplz type liiik dis lol really gets undr miii skinzz lol, they no how 2 spell lol, just chooz not 2 lol

I don't see that on here, but on fb

I don't mind as long as there is some puncutation or spacing - it's bloody hard to comprehend if those natural breaks aren't there.

I have to agree on that one .

ALL CAPS BOTHERS ME as that's shouting in internet land and really don't think its necessary, I like to use proper spelling 20 years of being a typist its hard to change the habit, I do try to restrain myself from correcting people though.

Yeah, it doesnt bother me... I normally use caps so you can tell if I am holding baby as its all lowercase and sometimes with out punctuation... I also use 3 full stops ALL the time, which I imagine is annoying, but that is how I talk with long dramatic pauses LOL.

I use CAPS to emphasize things, because I don't know how to italicize on here Hope people don't think I'm shouting at them!

I'm another one that always uses the 3 full stops all the time, Melnel... what is that even called?

As for writing without capitals, I figure people are probably holding babies, on this forum. Besides, it's summer... laziness is respectable in summer

You can italicize by clicking on the I in the pink box on the top of the reply box :) After you click on it just enter in what you want in italics

Doesn't bother me!! I only write in "a proper way" or whatever because got used to doing it for assignments. Like capitals, punctuation and spelling...

I usually notice a lot of spelling mistakes, but like everyone else figure they're doing something else (holding a baby, eating, whatever!) and I can usually work out what they're saying anyway.

Typing all in capitals lol reminds me off a facebook group "When I see WRITING LIKE THIS the voice in my head speaks louder" or whatever it was called...

Until I read this I would have thought it would bother me. Like caliandjack it's habit for me to type with initial caps so I just do it without thinking.

So it doesn't bother me on here but I HATE it in an email! I used to have people at work that typed with no capitals or with no punctuation or in text speak and it drove me insane! Particularly because it was a professional environment so there's an expectation that you do things the 'correct' way.

I don't really notice if someone hasn't used capitals in a sentence, or for "I", but I do if it's the first letter of a sentence etc.

Txt language drives me mad. I don't even use txt language when I'm txting!! Mind you, I also dislike no commas, or full stops. Makes it hard to figure out a sentence/paragraph...

I write whole words and use punctuation even in text messages, I want my 20c worth!

I don't mind no capitals and will write without them myself if I have a child helping me catch up on here. I touch type normally so the capitals just happen without me thinking about it. I prefer people to use correct spelling and grammar but it doesn't annoy me on here and I like people using extra full stops and so forth as it allows you to read it the way they were thinking it when they typed it. It really annoys me most other places though, like trademe ads, or worst still job ads. So not going to work for someone who can't even spell the job they are advertising. Instillation electrician....yeah ok!

It doesnt bother me in the slightest ..

Sometimes I get "annoyed" when someone types a huge post referring to lots of other peoples comments, but they dont put who they are referring to, or quote, so its extremely hard to comprehend what on earth they are talking about.

Oh and a paragraph full of spelling mistakes does my head in too, the odd one I dont find so bad, but when its every second word it makes reading it an exercise in itself, its even worse when the person is complaining about not being able to get a certain job, or get into a certain course both of which would require some degree of articulation.

I know I am probably guilty of a lot of things. I occasionally look back on things I have written ages ago and I am appalled at the amount of spelling mistakes, words missing, things just not making sense. I think I need to get in the habit of reading things through at least once before I post
My problem is I rely on the spell checker to much and if it doesn't pick it up then I don't notice.

I do notice myself going overboard with !!!!! and too

I am not too bothered by other peoples typos although I do notice when people use the wrong spelling/meaning of a word. Oh an people who just use conjunctions instead of full stops and commas, like but also and also...

No capitalisation doesn't bother me at all. Especially now I've got a baby and have experienced how hard it is to add the extra capitals in 1 finger typing.

Bad spelling I notice but don't mind too much. Text language annoys me a lot. I do notice and get annoyed when bad spelling's used in a professional setting, such as a newsletter from a retailer.

i don't mind spelling mistakes because, lets face it, we pretty much all make them every now and again. i can't stand no punctuation though, i got really frustrated when i read 'once were warriors' because there are no speech marks.

No caps = fine online. I reckon

I'm chronic with the '...' too. And always use full words and punctuation in my texts. (Nana)

One thing that really irritates me is the massive overuse and misuse of apostrophes (apostrophe's).

But then, I am a rampant grammar freak.

No caps doesn't bother me as long as your posts are still readable! I NEVER used caps until last year, so I'm not allowed to be bothered lol.

Lol is my filler word. I use it way too often, and very rarely am I actually laughing (see above :P). If I'm laughing I'll say something more, like rofflecopter. (Isn't the word "rofflecopter" awesome?)

Txt speak DOES bother me though. It takes me ages to read! I use predictive text, so now I struggle to read half of what my friends say most of the time.

Wow, hot topic!!

I don't mind lack of capitals, and if I am holding a bubba I don't bother either. But most of the time I touch type so capitals are all part of the habit.

I am a grammar and spelling nazi, but am fairly tolerant online, and also appreciate that some people find it hard. I guess it's laziness and poor punctuation that bugs me the most. I hate the you're/your, its/it's, too/to/two, their/there/they're mistakes - that's the nazi part of me.

I also use "dot dot dot" excessively, which is probably poor grammar in itself!

And I despise text speak. Eurgh.

Misuse of "you're" and "your" do my head in. Plus when people put captions on FB photos and say things like "This is baby and I at the park". It's "baby and ME"!!

My grandmother taught me a good way to remember that rule (whether it is I or Me)

simply take the person's name out , say the sentence again and see if it makes sense
eg "Sarah and I went to the park "
"Sarah and me went to the park "

Take out Sarah , and " I " makes more sense
(this is when I was a kid )

While we are kind of on the topic. Another thing that peeves me....and I'll probably offend people here, is topic headings that dont tell you what the topic is about
eg. "have you ever..." Grrrrr. I then have to open it to see if its something that I should read or not. I generally dont open them till much later on. Is it so hard to make the topic heading informative????

Thats my moan for the day
