Hi all,

Dr thinks I have a peptic ulcer (after 3 trips to emergency hospital) and am now booked in for a Gastroscopy in Feb at Auck Hospital.

It looks like I can choose to be sedated (which sounds good to me). Anyone been through this?

1) Did you choose sedation (did you get a choice)?
2) How was your throat afterwards & how were you?

Thanks guys

I had one about 5 years ago. I was sedated, I don't think they gave me a choice, they just did it sedated.

My throat was fine, I had a bit of discomfort, kind of like when you have a sore throat with a cold, but it went away fairly quickly. I was home the same day and just quite tired, from the anaesthetic I guess. No major dramas though

I was meant to have one then found out I was pregnant and did not have it done, but I knew quite a few people who had had them and they all recommended being sedated. One of them had to have 2 the first was done without been sedated and he said NEVER again, and so when he needed another of course he was sedated!

I wasn't sedated, just had my throat numbed. I will add mostly cause NSH was running 4 hours laate !!!Its not that bad. Quite uncomfortable but not painful.
Plus side being you can leave the hospital straight away.

If I had a choice would go without sedation again .

My throat was a like I had been yelling a lot iykwim?
was fine later that day

I've had 3 done in the last few years. I went privately so don't know how it works in the public system. No choice on sedation - just took whatever was going! Throat was a bit scratchy for the rest of the day. Its not a fun procedure but its not painful.
I know people that have done theirs without sedation and its even less fun but its not like it lasts long. I don't think they could get me in there without the drugs though.

When I had mine done 5 years ago sedation was routine. I don't remember thinking my throat was too scratchy afterwards either. DH had one done in December, and again there was no choice on sedation (it was the 'default'). He said that his throat was fine later on that day (in fact he was ravenous, his proceedure wasn't until 4pm and he'd had to fast all that day so all he could think about when he got home was food, and he certainly wasn't complaining about eating being painful! ).

Thanks guys,

Sedation it is then, I don't mind hospitals and a break away from the boys is always welcome .
Ceres: unfortunately mine is a late afternoon apointment too which means fasting for the day.
