It doesn't have a defrost button, and is getting hot cos it's obviously trying to freeze when I have the door open trying to get rid of the ice

Stupid SIL, obviously NEVER defrosted it as theres stuff frozen into the sides etc!!!

I've got a knife, and pretty much taking chunks off, but the frozen foods defrosting way too quick in this heat

We use boiling water. And soak up the water with old towels if we wanna do it quick.

Boiling water. Don't just pour it onto the ice though as that can cause damage. instead put the water in a container / bucket and shut the door for a bit. The heat will melt the ice.

My BIL used to just tape the knob down on the kettle, fill it up and put it on an extension cord, and pop it in the freezer to boil away for a few mins. Worked a treat, but not 100% sure how safe that would be!

be careful with the knife and chipping it off, if you put a hole in the casing the freezer is stuffed. We used to do the bowl of boiling water and shut the door, works but you've still got to carefully chip it away.

Empty and turn off the freezer
Boil the jug
Fill a large plastic bowl with boiling water
Place it in the freezer
Shut the door and leave it about 10 mins
Go back and gently prise the ice off with a plastic egg flip or similar, big chunks will come off and fall on the bottom of the freezer
Empty bowl of hot water and use it to scoop out ice.
Wipe it down, return the food
REMEMBER TO TURN THE FREEZER BACK ON.

I've forgotton the last one quite a few times.

we use the vacuum cleaner, and reverse the tube, so it blows air into the freezer, similar to the hair dryer trick!
Be careful using a knife... we use a plastic spatcula/fry pan utensil thingy.
Also I take the food out the freezer and put it all in a chiller bag (or wrap it in the newspaper) and put it somewhere in the shade.

I should have done this, the food was defrosting in the bins in the kitchen

Managed to get the 4inch layers of ice off. Couldn't believe how much was frozen into the roof/walls etc!!!! Ridiculous.
