So i've read some conflicting information, how about that?!! Some sources say that hummus is okay to eat (and to do so within two days of opening), and other sources are saying that it's not safe to eat.
What is the general consensus here?

I ate it. Only when freshly opened though.
Like any food stuff when you're pregnant, it really comes down to personal choice and what you feel comfortable with.

I ate hummus, and also just made sure that I threw it out after a couple of days max.
I think the listeria risk lies with the tahini that is in most brands of hummus, as it is a long life product.
You could always have a go at making your own, which would probably be just as yummy! (And you don't have to add any tahini.)

Thanks ladies, I will continue to eat it!
Also struggling to remember that I must heat up left overs. I'm such a grazer but now I can't just grab a few mouthfuls of something from fridge without effort lol.

NZFSA say http://www.nzfsa.govt.nz/consumers/low-immunity-child-pregnancy/pregnancy-food-safety/ - don't eat it , so I'm not. Like many things, though, it's a personal decision.
ETA - just 'ctr'+'F' and search for hummus to find it quickly on the link.

I tend to take them as the authority on things food-safety related. It's their job, and they are NZ-based (rather than some overseas sources), which is of course a good thing.
At the same time, they very much tend to err on the side of caution. Which suits me fine, but I know some people prefer a more relaxed approach.

I read in a few places not to eat it so I haven't. Anything that 'might' be unsafe, I have stayed away from. I figure it's only 9 months out of my life so I'd rather be safe than sorry. Each to their own tho If I was to eat it, I would eat it as soon as it was opened. Wouldn't eat it the next day for example.

Yeah I haven't eaten it either - even though I love it :( :(
Figure it's better to be safe than sorry! I'm making felafal for tea tomorrow night so that should help with my chickpea cravings :)

I'll eat it but only freshly opened & within expiry date.
You have to do what you are comfortable with though-no point eating it & then worrying about it for days afterwards.

i've got a list of food i can and can't eat, prior to getting pregnant we brought a xmas ham. Because it was so big for the two of us we cut it up into quarters and froze it. I know i can't eat ham from the deli but can i eat xmas ham or do i have to heat it up first??
I'm guess any left over cold meats are treated in the same way, such as cornbeef?

Mina, I would cook it thoroughly first and then probably not eat anymore of it as left overs.

That was my approach too. 9 months isn't that long really. And then once baby is born, you get to really enjoy eating all the things you haven't been able to

NZFSA say (I'm sounding like a parrot here!) that store-bought mayo should be stored in the fridge once opened, but seem to think it's fine. Since they don't specify, I'd imagine off the shelf is fine (it's heat-treated, I'm confident it would be).
It's odd, though, I have SO gone off mayo. I was sceptical about the bottle in the fridge (wasn't sure how long it had been open) so bought myself a new one - one try and I was gagging, it was dreadful. I hope I get my mayo-liking taste buds back post preggy!

Mayo and chips....really?
My MW from last pregnancy said store bought mayo (refering to Eta's condensed milk one) would be fine as the egg is treated,...or what not. As in stuff is added and it makes the egg fine.
It's fresh made mayo that you need to beware of.,

For mayo its basically only unsafe if the egg in it is unheat treated, so homemade stuff or maybe overseas mayo, as far as i know NZ law says the stuff in a store has to have the egg heat treated so they are safe.

Mum makes a great cooked mayo - it sounds gross, but it's actually brilliant, and fine to eat. It doesn't taste like raw eggs stuff, but it's so yummy, I like it more.

Best foods in a canadian mayo I think but also aussie and nz. Thats what I thought about mayo being on the shelf... I thought it must have been heat treated, thanks guys

Hi Ladies
My friends and i are getting together tomorrow night for a movie and dessert evening. I was hoping to make either creme brulee or creme caramel (very similar). I've looking on the net but can't find a solid answer as to if i can eat these desserts.
I'm aware i can't eat raw egg and both these desserts are baked so the egg is set, but they both have to be cooled prior to eating. The guide of food i can eat mentions that homemade custard has to be eaten hot and never cold.
Can anyone confirm please?

Hmm... my guess would be that in theory, they're probably a no-go. I mean, the basic concept is the same as chilled custard.
At the same time, I think if you made them yourself and took good care, the actual risk would be pretty slim. I wouldn't myself, but I know I'm overly-cautious. I think the odds of there actually being a problem would be really low.

Think i might be safe and make an upside down cake instead. The dessert wouldn't taste as sweet if i was worried the whole time about the risk.
