Originally I put this in the 'Planning Pregnancy' section cause that's where most of my OB friends hang out, but I feel like I am keeping all my toys in one basket by doing so, and you all have a right to know this - forewarned is forearmed after all!

About a month ago I went to Woolworths and bought a small amount of groceries, totalling $45.72 on the itemised screen. When I went to use my Eftpos card, the amount showing up on the Eftpos screen was $95.72 - a difference of $50. I questioned it, and made the checkout lady start the payment process again and all was fine. Today I went to Countdown and spent $115.31, which showed up as such on the itemised screen, but the Eftpos screen showed $125.31, a difference of $10. Again, I made the checkout lady start the payment process again and all was fine... so it pays to check your Eftpos screen ladies!

Each checkout lady swears they saw the same amount on their own screens as what I see on the itemised screen, and both were shocked to see the different amount on the Eftpos screen.

I spoke to the supervisors in both supermarkets at the time (at first I was convinced the first time was a scam!!!) and they think that the operators are hitting a button accidentally that says 'cash out' or something - well surely they would have type in an amount?

Hmmmm interesting, thanks for that MB will have to keep an eye out. Food is expensive enough without dodgy things like that happening!

This sounds really suss to me. I used to be a supervisor in a supermarket and unless anything has changed the only way a different price would come up on the eftpos machine is if the customer was getting cash out. It sounds to me like the operators might be trying it on... you can't really do that by accident because as you say they have to enter in the amount... I will be checking my receipts a bit better.

This reminds me though once my dad went to Burger King and spent $9.90 and they charged him $99!

Ah-ha well don't get me started on that one! I tried it once, and had to return ALL my produce as it was over-ripe/rotten/squishy. Total waste of the time I was meant to have saved by doing online shopping.

A friend did an experiment with on-line shopping (Woolworths) - she marked about 20 items on her shopping list online and before hitting 'checkout' she printed it off and went shopping with it, and bought exactly those goods (same brands, no deviations or extras). Came in at about $18 less. She didn't count a freight charge cause she didn't 'checkout' online.

Disclaimer - I am in the South Island so results may vary, don't try this at home.

Hmmm interesting, I went to countdown yesterday and their eftpos machines weren't able to give out cash I haven't checked my statement to see if the transaction went through twice.

Thankfully ive never had a problem with their service .. I shop online for both my home and work place and so far so good.

I love the way that you order 1 kg of something and always end up with more because they cant get it exact.

i went back to farmers last week and complained - wasnt the $4.99 that i needed but the point of it -

I bought a doll for $15 - on special (not red dot!) from $30 and was down from like $49!

anyways check my receipt later (no idea why!) and see that she has charged me $15 PLUS 33 point something %!!! so charged me $19!!!

I had a teller and a supervisor stumped - the receipt had overcharged me, they say there is no way she could have overrriden to over charge me (she was a young girl) and no idea how she did it to make sure it stops....they refunded me no worries but I was most concerned at how apparently easy it is for them to overcharge for items....weird!!!!

I loved online shopping in chch we always got better quality stuff than i normally pick and ended up with more for our dollar cos they would pick more meat than i asked or would give me a better brand at the special price if they were out. The free samples we use to get we brilliant as well. I hate that they dont do online shopping for produce down here

Things have changed somewhat WRX! It's absolutely crap quality now and I am not the only one in ChCh who thinks so - even the manager of the Rangiora store that I took the produce back to said he was absolutely appalled and rung head office while I waited!

I had an interesting experience with pumpkin patch online recently. I was putting things in my cart and then I went to check out and noticed that at the checkout stage a couple of items were no longer available...fair enough. I carried on and did my payment. When I got my confirmation email 2 items were $4 more than originally...but I have no proof as to what they were. I just remember as I was looking at prices thinking "yeah, thats ok". I emailed them and they said there is nothing they can do and that the price can change up to the final purchase...but it had changed once I clicked to the payment screen (so wasnt seeing it itemised).

Then when my order did arrive 7 working days later   the main thing I wanted wasnt there as they had sold out......but its in the shops.

Grrrrr!

I went shopping at Countdown on a Friday paid for $200 odd in groceries by eftpos.

Then my card declined when I went elsewhere!

I had been charged twice and it took all my money! But the worst part was....it was a long weekend and NOONE at Countdown could help me!   I had to dispute it with the bank to get the money back the following week.   Grrr.

Jeepers, this has me a bit worried! All our supermarket shopping (inlcuding the shopping I do by myself) goes on DH's credit card, and I don't regularly check it...and he wouldn't know how much I spent at any one time. May have to do some re-checking!

Sounds like they added some cash out and were going to take the money themselves at cash up time to me. Happens very reguarlarly in bars...

WRX when I rung head office and asked who supplied it to me they said it came from Church Corner and FERRYMEAD - I am in berluddy Rangiora!!! So I blame Ferrymead cause I have shopped at CC and always found them as good as Rangiora!

Summerlamb that's what everyone I have told thinks!

I've never heard of this happening. I've heard of alot of things but not this. This sort of thing sh*ts me because of the fact that staff who are above board get blamed for things they have nothing to do with. DP has been blamed for money going missing out of a float when he wasn't even on the premises for two days, took money out of his pay which is great when you have a newborn and are trying to make things meet!

I don't know about supermarkets but I know that at stores/restaurants that you are able to reverse transactions if it is the last transaction done. And also that they have a merchant card and can do a refund through the eftpos machine (having done many myself) like I said don't know about supermarkets. But in the case of a double charge you would be required to show bank statements and then the accountant would have to go through all transactions.

I remember you posting about your DP and it was terrible how his work treated him. But I can assure you that it does happen. There are plenty of dishonest people out there who rip off the general public and make life difficult for honest people like your DP.

Well I am still soooosuper peed off about this, and that no one has rung me back from Progressive (I rang Head Office and complained and asked for an explanation two days ago!), that I have now written to our local newspaper telling of my experience. I haven't mentioned supermarket names, just mentioned that they are 2 different supermarkets in North Canterbury owned by the same company. The locals will figure it out!
