I've got a 10 week old that goes down for naps ok (I currently rock to sleep) but then wakes up 30 mins later. I'm thinking of trying the pick-up-put-down method. Anyone used this successfully? Or even unsuccessfully?
From what I understand when they cry you pick them up, as soon as they're quiet you put them down again. If they cry you pick up again and repeat. Any other things I should be doing to get this to work?

I did it with Jake but not very successfully... my kid is stubborn and does what he wants and has done from the minute he realised he was being evicted.
We did it for a week with every nap and there were no signs of improvement so we stopped . 2 weeks later he just stArted doing it on his own (up until about 5 weeks ago )
I do know people who have used it successfully!

Sounds like you might be a guinea pig on the topic Chelle.........i have a baby hammock and anyone would think i get commission cos i RAVE about it......if he starts stirring i just bounce it and he drifts back off.......hes only in it during the day too (sleeps in a bassinett at night) but he will wake after 10mins at times and 30mins other times but i can bounce him back to bliss.........i dont have any idea what i would do without it
Wonder if these can be hired anywhere?

I did the vacuum cleaner technique...do not be fooled, you dont have to actually clean anything. Just turn it on and they go back to sleep!

From what I know the PUPD method is for babies over 4 months. Can't remember why though.
Babies under age that can be patted and shushed to sleep.
That said my alert 6 month old didn't respond well to PUPD, I still shush pat and works a treat. (twice this morninng, once when overtired and then when woke up after 45 mins. lol)

I thought it was pick up for younger babies and pat for older ones lol, I tried it once and each time I put her back down she cried harder and quicker!
I also have a hammock, I am dreading her out growing it cause she sleeps in it at night too.. I can reach out and bounce her from my bed heh

I think it is pat for littlies and PUPD for older ones. That is a Baby Whisperer thing and they have a website with extensive forums there.
I tried it with Alex at some point but it just had the opposite effect tbh. Some babies don't like that extra stimulation of being picked up and put down.
Personally i used to try and comfort in the cot/bassinet first, singing, patting, shhhing. If that didn't work i'd pick up and sing and rock him till drowsy then put him down again.

Of course, I forgot about the vacuum cleaner... worked a treat.... lived by Jakes cots LOL
You can hire hammocks from baby on the move.

Hmm maybe I should wait another couple of months then. I did briefly try a couple of weeks ago but by the third attempt at putting him down he got a little hysterical so I stopped. Maybe it was too early.
I've got a hammock but it doesn't really work that much better only sometimes. Like yesterday I caught him as he was about to wake and got another 1 1/2 hours but today no luck, even though I caught him then too - and I'm currently trying the shushing/rocking/patting for the next hour or so once he wakes up and then usually give in.
One question, when they're on their backs you can't really pat their bottom, or do you roll them on to their side? Or do you pat their chest? I've been going for the chest, but not really finding it works.
I use womb music so I guess it's the same as the vacuum?
It's weird, he doesn't take long at all to go down initally for his nap, it's just when he wakes after a sleep cycle. I've tried just getting him up too but after a couple of minutes he gets grizzly and his arms and legs are flying around everywhere so he's obviously still tired!

What age did he start doing it on his own melnel? I was wondering if he'd fix it himself at some stage. Like maybe when he goes to two naps? Is that around 4 months?
