Well, friends are kindly organising a babyshower for me... eeek how exciting!!! Now here's where I fess that I've never even been to a babyshower, (and actually used to find the whole idea pretty ick). But suddenly I care about them... funny that! So who here had one? How many weeks were you when you had it? (is 8 months pregnant too late - yesterday I felt like a whale and wondered how I'd ever be sociable by then). How'd it go? Did you end up doubled-up on things? (I figure most people give clothes or toys, and doubling-up on them wouldn't be a problem).

I had one thrown for me by some friends and I was 34 weeks pregnant. It was great!! Yes I had some double. but it was not a problem because most of it was cloths and you do use them. There was loads of food and games to play and it was just a generally fun day.
I had loads of double ups after bub was born I still kept 4 gift packs aside as there was way too much cloths of the same size.
I am sure you will enjoy it!

Hi Andie,
My sister is organising a baby shower for me and I will be around 30-31 weeks at that stage (she is not able to do it later as she is going overseas for 4 weeks just after baby shower and when she gets back I will be due 2 weeks later so have decided to hold one earlier).
I have been to a couple of baby showers before and with the last one we had for a friend (it was a surprise for her) we all collected money and went out and brought clothes/socks/hats etc from Pumpkin Patch and Just Kids and put exchange vouchers with them in case my friend already had a lot of the stuff we brought. She was pretty chuffed with what we had brought for her. We also brought a gift for mum to be as sometimes people forget about that.
Yay exciting that you have baby shower coming up!!!

I'm having one at 36 weeks....a little late but we were juggling orgainising a house to hold it at etc etc...one my friends is organising all that for me.
I love baby showers...I went to my friends one the other month and it was really neat, she didn't get any double ups or anything and she had a great time even though she was a little dubious about the whole baby shower idea at first!

I am sure you would enjoy it, if you had it...and come on, to sit and eat and be ""oooohhhh"" and "aaahhh" over cant be that bad.
I was not allowed to do any thing on my shower and I even got pressies for me, some cloths voucher and bath salts and nice body lotion type of things....NICE!!!

I had one with Kiya... the only person I knew by more than sight was the friend who threw it for me! I met half the ladies there on the night, and by the time Kiya was born a month later I knew most of them only a little better. Oh, I moved to Hamilton 6 weeks before Kiya was born, so a couple of weeks before the baby shower.
I never had one with Josiah... just never got around to it! but I want one this time, and will be organising it soon.

I had mine exactly one month before Ella was born. We had food (which I mostly made), games and presents. I only got one double up but everything I got came in useful. No one offered to throw it for me, so I organised it myself

I had one at 35 weeks I think. My friend organised it for me and arranged for ladies to come and do manicures and pedicures which was great as I couldn't reach my toes to do my toe nails by then! I got given clothes and toys for Zac and no double ups.

My girlfriend organised one for me. I must have been about six months. She had games - eating babyfood, which almost made me gag, food, and pin the nappy on the bub. She's canadian so she was REALLY into it...a little too much if you ask me, but we had fun. Only thing was it was a surprise and she had ony invited a few of my friends, rather than a lot of my other girlfriends I would've liked. I love Kim's idea aboutthe pedicure and manicure though. Less of a babyshower and more of a mummy pamperiong session sounds good. Stuff being preggers, might just organise one of those now....so who wants to come to my house and watch me get a manicure- and pay for it??? Sounds like fun!

Where are you deb? I deffinately reckon you could have one for the second. The first and only baby shower i have ever been to, i was only 5 months or so and it was for a lady having her 2nd. She got given heaps of stuff! LOts of toys and things too.
Liz - Wouldn't it be lovely if someone did organise a mummy to be pampering session/ I'm kind of secretly hoping that someone might give me some bath salts or something. I think it woul dbe great to get given something for me aswell, after all, we have to carry this child for 9 months (give or take) and then push the jolly thing out! LOL.

I had one 8 weeks before having Paris - we got heaps of neat stuff and family bought the big things like a playgym and my classmates bought us a huge nappy bag - which we can't use much day to day but if we are going out for the day or travelling it's is wonderful, I found it quite tiring having it at that late stage.
With Ayja i had one at 20 weeks, and found that was great because then i could just top up what was given (helps that we already had everything from Paris)
There is a good site that has heaps of neat ideas on it including games - here's the link

Im going to have to organise one for my friend who is due in december, any ideas on when the best time would be (she is about 20 weeks now) and also should I do games and if so what sort of games? Im thinking most of the women wont know each other cos she has a number of different friend circles but Im her oldest friend so its probably up to me to arrange it. Also shoudl I invite her mum and sister? What makes a good baby shower?

I think snacks are essential for one!! And yep, it's the sort of thing I'd invite my mum, sister, mother-in-law and sis-in-law to. Mine looks like it'll be 5 weeks out from my due date, which feels a bit late to me (I say sitting here at nearly 30 weeks and feeling not-so-mobile and pretty blimmin tired) - and because the 'nesting' has fully kicked in, I'm anxious to have things ready for our baby's arrival, but don't know what I'll be given at the babyshower. I'm assuming it'll be lots of clothes! So I'm holding off on going overboard on them for now.

Andie, at least you know what you are having though aye. I'm having my baby shower in a couple of days and i will be 36 weeks. Don't know what we are having so even getting cot sheets etc and blankets etc has been hard. It's a bummer having a shower so late i reckon, although it helps build the excitement to baby's arrival, it's real late, and if you like me and havn't gone shopping r just waiting for after the shower, it then means what we dont get, we have to go get. if you know what i mean

seriously - even though most people get neat stuff from the shower - GO AND SHOP!!! does not matter how many people and pressies are from the shower, it will not be enough - go to places like tnt - they have huge sale on right now and stock up on basics - cos that's what people usually forget - they get the cute little outfits but what about the bodysuits, singlets and plastic backed bibs? if baby has a bad day full of explosions from either end - or even just little spills that weren't caught in time - you could easily go through a dozen or more.
shower pressies are like the cherries on the top... anything you really have a surplus of can always be saved for #2, be put in a nappy bag that maybe stays at granny's house for those "just in case" times, or in the car.. and you won't miss them cos you already have enough at home.

unless you have a grandmother like mine. I mentioned that I wanted to get Jake a few sweatshirts as he had run out of nice fitting one - she turns up with EIGHT!!!!
When taine was born, she had two large bags filled with stuff - basic and cutie pie stuff.

Babyshowers are pretty cool because everyone looks out for you and you hardly have to do anything except talk and open presents And they're mostly always at someone else's home so you don't even need to make sure the house is clean first
One of the games I had at my babyshower and my sister-in-law's too, was the photo game: where everyone brings a baby photo of themselves and they are all put together and everyone has to match them up. A bit tricky if you have a lot of visitors.
The common game around at the moment seems to be identifying baby food. A lot of people really don't like this game but if you stick mostly with fruit ones it's not so bad It's much easier if there is a list of names to choose from, not all of the guests have bought baby food (let alone the first time mum! lol).
My all time favourite babyshower game is the chocolate one: the host/game organiser gets a pack of disposable nappies and about 8 chocolate bars. The chocolate bars are gently melted and smeared on - yep it looks like that! - and uses a vivid marker to number them. During the party they are handed around with pen and paper and the guests have to work out from the smell, what the flavour of the chocolate bar was. I hope that makes sense. It's such a funny game, no one really wants to smell it at first because it looks so bad! but it gets a lot of laughs and is a great ice-breaker
All the best everyone!

Oh and as for timing, 4-6 weeks before would be my preference, although in the last 4 weeks can help to break the mundane waiting. I had a friend who was expecting to go a week late and the baby shower was also arranged late... yup you guessed it, her contractions started during the baby shower and her baby was born just after midnight that night!!

I'm having my baby shower 4 weeks out mainly because that's just how it's worked out with co-ordinating with the person whose house it will be at. That's all good...it will also feel like a celebration of the end of work!!! (3 weeks 1 day and counting!)

I'm so excited about mine!! I've got the 'boring' stuff as far as clothes go, so as a couple of you have said, any double-ups will be extras that are bound to get enough use anyway! I still don't know the details of it, but I'm loving that because I think it's just great that these friends are taking care of organising it. Now I wanna plan them for others - I'll have a newborn by the time any more are rolling 'round, so I might just have to see how that goes first!!

I had my baby shower around the 30 or so week mark and it was awesome! I got sooo much stuff for bubs but not for myself- which I didn't mind at all. Ohh well actually they made me a necklace with one of them baby on board signs and they found a jumbo dummy at a toystore and made a necklace with that as well.
We had games like- my water broke, where we froze tiny babies in ice cubes and one was stuck in each ladies drink and the first one to have melt in their cup- they had to yell out 'my water broke' and they got a prize.
Then we had the poopy diaper game where we folded and pinned however many face washers and in one of them stuck peanut butter and whoever chose that one got a prize. Then at the end- I got to keep all the face washers.
Also we have the pop the balloon game- where we stuck a prize in each balloon but only one balloon had something special in it.
Umm- we also had to pin the nappy onto a balloon game. We did that one in teams of 4 and you had to pass it on once you were done and if you popped the balloon you had to blow another one up. And the winning team got a prize.
Then we handed around a teddy bear for everyone to sign and also we handed around a guests book where they could sign that and write in handy hints for when the baby comes and alot of them took a guess at what he'd look like, how heavy he'd be and his length.
For the food we had a variety of chips, lollies and cupcakes with the ABC on them, we had sushi and different dips and crackers, we had different sandwiches, party pies and sausages rolls, umm then just a big platter of meats, cheese, onions, gherkins etc. And for drinks we had, red wine, white wine, juice, tea and coffee and water.
There was a bit to much food but everyone liked the idea of taking a plate home with them.
Oh and for thank you gifts at the end we handed out chocolates that were wrapped in tule- which was really nice.
Honestly- if you're having a babyshower, wait until afterwards before you go out and buy alot of things! And enjoy yourself.

Not long at all! I rekon you should have one, Deb! Why not, eh? You deserve it. With so little time to go you might have to just ask a friend if you can use their house, make the nibbles a 'bring a plate' deal, and e-mail people a quick invite - a nice evening or avo with some friends couldn't hurt, especially when they're bringing you prezzies (eeek!).
