My 3 year old is not enjoying afternoon kindy- he is finding the transition from his quiet centre to the hustle of 45 children hard going and tells me there are too many kids here. We've had lots of tears, tantrums when I leave and it's a mission just to get him there- although he is fine after I leave, I hate that it's such a drama each afternoon. Any advice on how to calm his fears about the frenzy?

You could try the big boy things, and that now he is a big boy he needs to go with the other big children. Find out who his primary carer/teacher is and make sure he goes to them when he gets there and they should make him more at ease with there being more children there.
------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Harry has been at creche since he was 3 mts so you'd think he'd find it easy to go but when he was about 2.5 years he use to scream and cry when we would leave. I hated it so much so I was ready to give up work so I didn't have to go through it every day. One thing the teachers suggested was to bring one of his favourite toys in each day and that helped a little. He is now fine which is fantastic.

I lik the primary care-giver Idea. Maybe encourage him to go up to that person and say hi every morning (maybe check out who else would look after him too, because if he got too attached to that person, guarenteed they'll get sick or want to go on holiday and you've got the same problem again)
Could he have a special "older" friend? Maybe they could assign one of the kids there to be his playmate - to check on him and take him to play with them.
My son also had problems when he went from a one-day-a week daycare boy, to a every-day datcare boy. I talked to the workers about it and they tried to take his hand every morning and distrct him.
how about a watch? Show him what the clock hands look like when it's time to go home - he can check on it. tell him on big boys who go to afternoon kindy can wear one.
