Does anyone know if it is cheaper to renew your passport before it expires as opposed to apply for a new one after it has expired? I just realised that my passport expires next month and according to the passport website it is $150!! Something we can't really afford at the moment especially as we aren;t planning on going anywhere anytime soon

The cost of getting a passport is criminal, I agree.

But my understanding is that it doesn't matter when you do it, it costs the same

It costs the same amount so long as it has been less than 2 years since it lapsed.

It cost's the same it only takes a month to get it renewed, wait till your going some where and then do it.

They're only valid for 5 years, depending on how much you travel you might not get much use out of it if you renew it before you old one expires.

As long as your old one has 6 months before it expires you should still be able to travel on it.

Only reason is we are relocating to Europe this year and when I'm travelling with DD I don't want any hassles at different airports. I know of several women who have encountered problems due to have different names to their children. And I've slowly transitioning to my married name and would like some ID with that name Otherwise I definetly wouldn't have bothered - the cost is horrendous!

I would love to renew mine so it is under my maiden name but I have better things to spend the money on. I hate buying tickets under a different name to DH and DS.

Five years isn't very long life for a passport if you don't use it very often, so I would probably hold off if you really don't need it. I personally would feel uneasy about not having a valid one as you never know when you may need it in a hurry.

My passport is $320 and I have to go to Wellington to present myself to get it. $150 and being able to send it away I would be so lucky. And I can never get a passport in my married name due to me not registering my marriage in my home land.

Passports are $150 for an adult, and $80 for a child. As long as there is nothing they need to contact you for and the form is filled out correctly, it takes up to a maximum of 10 working days to be completed, and then is sent by signature courier so ensure you leave time for that.
I would ALWAYS leave longer time if you need to though, as you never know if they need you to send in more information.

If you need an 'urgent' passport, it is an extra $150. (so $300 for an adult and $230 for a child). These are done within 3-working days. Although if you do ever need one quicker, ring them, as they can usually help you out.

Then there is another service called 'Call-out' which is $600, and this is where they can do them pretty quickly - they have staff on-call who come in on evenings/weekends to do this for you.

Any questions, ring them on 0800 22 50 50 - and the trick is not to press any buttons, then it will transfer you to someone at the end who you can talk to directly.

Living overseas myself, I'd also recommend it JIC you're planning a #2. When we had Callum I still had my old passport (maiden name) and so on his birth certificate my name is different to DH and Callum

The different surname to your kids thing won't be a problem if your DH (assuming he has the same surname as them) is travelling with you. If it's just you and the kids, it pays to take their birth certificates with you that list you as the mother, especially if you're travelling somewhere like the USA where they're super paranoid about child abduction...

My passport is still in my maiden name and DH and I have been married 4yrs. So when DD and I went to Melbourne last year our passports had different last names. I took my marriage certificate just in case anyone queried it, but no one did.

Question though: Is it true that children under 5 need a new passport everytime they travel? My mum tells me they get it for free but need a new one to update the pic, but there is no option for this on the form!

Another question: We are possibly moving overseas next month (finding out later this week) and my passport expires in November this year, and DH's in Feb next year. Do we need to get new passports before we go (if we go)?

Sorry for thread jack

My passport is still in my maiden name and we've been married 7 years. One of these days I might change it,but I like my maiden name and hubby doesn't mind one way or the other.
I've often travelled overseas on my passsport(Australian) with my son who has my husbands name and bubs normally travels on his Irish passport and never had any problems.

But,yes it is expensive to renew passports. My son has 3 passports which costs us a fortune!.

Erm I've never heard of kids needing a new pp every time they travel. C's passport is valid for 5 years, he's travelled loads already. It's fun filling it up

I travelled with C on my old pp last year, no probs at all. Never even thought to take our marriage cert but then it's fairly common for women not to change their name over here so kids don't always have the same surname as Mum anyway.

New passports before you move - unless there's some requirement to enter Aussie with 6 months or more validity I wouldn't bother. We renewed DH's pp here (in Singapore) just before it expired and it was really fast, I wouldn't bother getting one sooner than you need to just coz you're moving.

The different name thing - we've never had a problem with it (with DS or convincing peopl I am married to DH) .. it's just me I hate the fact DS's birth cert has a different name when I really wanted to change my name to DH's when we got married!

I certainly hope not as we're travelling next month (eek!) with the same passports we got for the girls since they were 8 weeks old.

I've only just renewed my passport to my married name (married 6 years).
When travelling on my maiden name I just made sure to have the ticket booked under that name or if that wasn't done I took my marriage cert with me.
Legally you're still known as both.

me too! That's probably the only reason I didn't keep my maiden name.

Also if you are travelling through the US they require your passport to be valid for 6 months at the date of travel.
This is even if you are transiting in the US.

We got C's pp done when he was 2 weeks old - 6 weeks before his EDD The photo requirements were SO hard!!! But thank god they accepted the one we sent them. Also we guessed his hair and eye colour (brown eyes, blond hair) and got the eye colour completely wrong. oops!

Anywho re travelling with kids with teeny baby pics in their pp - sometimes the immigration dude letting you through will say C's name to see if he reacts ... generally they all just say "hello baby" and off we go

You definitely don't need a new passport everytime your child travels.

Also as others have said about how much expiration you need on your passport, it is usually 6months, but it depends on the country you are going to. If you're not sure, always contact the Embassy / High Commission here to find out how long expiration you need.

I wonder where Mum got that from then! We also got Chelsea's passport photos done at 2weeks, lol what a mission! She didn't even look like that anymore at 6wks when we went to Aussie!
The country we *may* be moving to is Japan, hmm yes I will contact the embassy to see what the requirements are. Would rather have my married name on there to make it easier with the visa etc etc. Wish the company would hurry up and tell us if we're going or not

Just a note: they no longer do this. If you want a new name in your passport, you do need to get a whole new passport.

I would get a new passport. We lived in Japan before we lived here (and before we were married) and it's much like here in that the name on your gaijin card is the name you will be "officially" known by ... and that comes from your pp.

Yay! Japan! So exciting. Where abouts would you be going?

I still have mine in my madien name too its due to expire in December this year so i will proberly change it to my married name then. Mind you i still have my bank accounts in my maiden name must get around to chnaging that one day.

Have no idea about the passport thing i would think they would need to be valid for the time you are there but it would pay to check that. My brother and his partner are supposed to be heading off to USA to live for a 3-4 years :( middle of next month they still haven't got their permits.

I don't take birth certs when I travel just because we are travelling to oz and back, If I was to go through USA I probably would but the rest of my ID is in my married nameso have that to show.

Andrew travelled on his first passport 3 times and I got him a new one last year as it has expired, immigration just laughed at the photo and said "are you sure this is you Andrew?" he laughed with them and said I was that baby.

I still travel on my maiden name. I didnt see the point in having it changed until it expires. Can be a pain when booking flights but you get used to it.

Jackson's PP is in our surname and we never had any problems going through customs or security etc with 2 different names. Although his PP pic was taken when he was 6 weeks old and he doesnt really look like that now let alone when he will be 3 or 4 years old

but its the same fee, and to renew it easily you fill the form out and send it along with the cheque for payment and your old passport and all done in 10days you get a new one

Just had a thought about moving countries and needing a new pp within a few months (even a year really).... you need someone to witness your application and photo that has known you for 12 months or more and they can't be related. When I applied for my new pp here in Singapore we had only JUST been here a year and wasn't working so needed a kiwi who I'd known 12 months to sign everything .... and I didn't know anyone

We ended up waiting a few more months and got our ONE kiwi friend here to do it for us when she'd been living in Singapore more than a year. It was a real PITA and there wasn't really a way around it apparently (after lots of calls to the High Commission here who told me they couldn't give me a definitive answer so I needed to talk to DIA in NZ who wouldn't budge on the requirements!!!)

Ohhh good point kiwisj!! Will definitely have to get new passports before we go then as we won't know anyone there! We will (if I get the job, that is) be going to Hokkaido!! Last time (2006) we were in Ibaraki-ken and got to explore the rest of Japan, except for Hokkaido so thought we'd go there this time! Am getting slightly impatient waiting to be told if I got the job or not... the guy did say by the end of this week, but still...
