For you experts out there How much fabric would you need to make one and are the "rings" easy to find?

I'd say at least 3m, if not 4m - though I have seen a lot of variation with sling 'tails' in terms of length.
Here is the Slingbabies page on ring slings which has a good overview:

I'm not sure whether the rings are 'easy' to find, I did a quick google and there weren't heaps available directly in NZ, and I'd personally rather source metal rings over nylon ones. You could try and overseas vendor though.

You can buy the rings off trade me a lady sells the nylon ones with instructions on how to make them. Not sure if she has any listed at the moment (I counldn't find one)
Advantage of nylon over metal is that they don't heat up in the drier/sun. Nylon rings are increadibly strong.
Hippy Mama why do you have the preference?

For a few reasons I guess, metal rings are easier to slide fabric through and don't catch on the fabric as often (as nylon can degrade / damage more easily), nylon rings tend to be chunkier - and I personally wouldn't put any of my slings in the drier if I could help it - except maybe a pouch sling.
Also each ring is weight tested to 250lb so they're super strong, I'm not sure about the nylon ones.
