I wasn't really sure where to post this but hopefully someone might be able to help. Without going into all the details, we have found out that Floyd has an immune problem, because of this we have had to pull him out of daycare which of course means I cant work. Does anyone know if there is a benefit or anything we can apply for while I cant work? When we were at Starship today they implied it will be at least 2 months if not longer before we can even attempt to re-introduce him to daycare. TIA

Hugs  . My gremlins have a non-specified, non-syndromic immune deficiency and it's made life pretty interesting.
We qualify for a Child Disability Allowance for them, it's only $80ish a fortnight for each, so not much in comparison with potential earnings, but every little bit helps. Floyd should definitely qualify for it. Hope this helps. I don't know what the scope of Floyd's problems are, obviously, but if it helps, the gremlins are getting healthier and healthier as they get older - their first two years were a nightmare with hospital visits, ear surgeries etc., but last winter they made it thru relatively unscathed. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Oh and I'm not sure if it's a viable option for you, but having a nanny has been brilliant for us as she comes even when the girls are sick, which means I don't have to take time off work. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

| Are you curently getting WFF ? If oyuare you just call them with the change of income. If not you should apply. Also try WINZ give them call see what they can do. And try asking if you qualify for the accomadation supplement. |

You could probally get one of the Domestic purposes benefits, I think there is one for if you are caring for a sick child.

Thanks heaps guys. I'm thinking DP may earn to much for us to get much as our WFF isnt much (we opted for the end of year payment as we didnt know what I would be doing work wise and didnt want to have to pay $$ back), but I'll look into things tomorrow just in case!

ask your social worker - they are available at starship- to hook you up with respite care when they do your child disability allowence
Have you looked into in home care - like porse - might be anb option for you - maybe with just 2 or 3 other kids he would cope ok - worth a try take care of you too hun  ------------- http://lilypie.com]

Sorry I have no idea, but we were never told we would possibly qualify for one (I took 2 months off when my DS had a bone infection, then only worked half hours for the next few months as he was neutropaenic (low white cell count).
Definitely go to WINZ though, a child disability allowance is usually granted, but it depends on how long they think the condition will last. It generally has to last over 12 months for the child to qualify (it's about $40 a week). Don't know of any other payments, but I would definitely look into in-home care for the meantime if you need to work. |

Other than WFF and the child disability allowance there is little else available unless you have no money at all - then there is all the WINZ benefits. If you have to travel to hospital/doctor etc appointments frequently and/or live a certain distance from there, you may qualify for travel assistance (social worker will know).
I have been off work for most of the last 10 months with a sick child and have recently resigned as no end in sight yet, and we get very little. ------------- Aimee Hannah 22/10/05 Greer 11/02/08 |

I would look at applying for the Accommodation Supplement especially since you are paying a mortgage I was told on Friday when I was at Winz that the "threshold" for the AS is quite high so I think any little bit that you can get - I'd take it. Neutropaenia is so hard isn't it - there could be a large number of causes. We stopped all testing after 6 months as they ruled out cancer, auto-immune disorders and cyclical neutropaenia through weekly bloods and a bone marrow biopsy. Turns out he could just be someone with a low white cell count naturally so we just have to watch his exposure in his 'low' times. We are lucky in that when he is on the downwards part of his cycle if there are too many bugs at DC I can leave him with my MIL. FX you get some answers soon. A lady at work is neutropaenic and she is now managing it really well, after only being diagnosed recently. |
