I'm pretty sure I have this. My nipple hurts terribly, and DD has white spots on the inside of her bottom lip. Neither of us are enjoying feeding much atm.

I've only just figured out the problem now. What do I do about it? Do I need to see a doctor? Is there something I can do to limit the pain overnight?

I had this recently. Midwife prescribed thrush drops for baby and thrush cream for my nipples. Both you can get without a prescription from a chemist though. Only thing I can think of to help with the pain until these start to work is nipple shields. I used them for about 24 hours until my nipples felt up to coping again

I'd say go to Dr. Make the appointment for your baby. Baby perscriptions are free, and buying over the counter isn't. Also, there are different strengh treatments, some have to be washed off before BF, others don't. Dr could go through this with you.

I've had this a few times. I went to the doctors and she gave me two creams, one for me and one for bubs, although she didn't display signs of it in her mouth. I didn't feel so comfortable putting more medication in her mouth. So

I made sure I changed and washed my bras and tops every day. I then got some natural cream from the wholefood store and researched alternative methods on the net. I found that washing my nipples with apple cider vinegar worked wonders. You must wash it off before feeding. I got great relief from this. Also when i got it another time, i was away from home and only had tea tree oil which also worked, but also had to be washed well off before feeding. I think basically yeast can't live in the same environment.

also cutting sugar out of your diet as it fuels yeast - found this bit the hardest:)

Well, I hopefully will have it sorted soon

She started to fuss at the breast last night, I presume from a sore lip, so I was concerned she'd stop feeding if it got worse overnight.

So, I rang my mum - no answer.
Rang plunketline, who said I'd best go to the afterhours chemist and get something.
Rang the after hours chemist to ask what they could give me before I drove 45 minutes to get there. They said there was only one thing she could give me without seeing a doctor and she didn't think it would work anyway.
She said there'd be a massive wait at the AH doctors... so I was looking at a 4-hour round trip, if I was lucky
So I rang my mum again (she's an ex LLL counsellor), and this time she answered. She said to make a mixture of 1t baking soda, 1 c water, and dab it on the nipples and in bub's mouth and that would soothe it. So we did that and it worked a treat and I was able to just take DD to the local doctor this morning.

So, we now have some medication for it, and hopefully we'll both be better soon.

Hopefully the baking soda trick might help someone else too

I was going to add, watch out for nappy thrush. Some babies get this when they have mouth thrush and looks just like nappy rash, but doesn't respond to nappy rash cream or fresh-air treatment.

Thanks Issacs mum - I think she actually got it in reverse order (which is kinda gross ). She had nappy thrush, and as well as putting thrush cream on it, I was leaving her with lots of nappy-off time. I'm guessing that allowed her to put her hands in it and then suck on them

Baby's are so delightful!!
