On friday my little girl turned two... My dad came over and brought her a wand and head band thingy (a $2 shop purchase, his fave place to shop). hes not normally a pressie buying guy and it was really sweet of him..he had been over a couple of days prior and i had told him it was her birthday and he said he would get her something but i didnt really expect it....

anyway the disappointing thing is that my MIL didnt ring up or anything... i know she is only 2 but a call or even a FB message might have been nice. When we were pregnant with her she was stoked to be having a grand daughter, the first girl grandchild born to her kids - her step sons have girls though but she doesnt see them much as they dont live in auckland. She raved about how spoilt this girl would be, along with SIL, and how she would be doted on. Yet when we went to SIL's last night she was surprised that eden had even turned two!

i dont know why i am bothered... well actually i do. This is edens first birthday without my mum around and i just know she would have rung up and i guess i am missing her and am sad that eden is not going to know her nana!

ooops, turning into a woe is me post now! Not sure wether to push Post New Topic or not now! LOL oh well, here goes!

Id be bothered too Deb, thats not on, like you said, even a phone call or FB message would have been nice, but to not acknowledge it at all is not fair on Eden.

And hugs to you *hugs*

First off I can't believe your wee thing is two! - Happy belated birthday Eden

Secondly I think it's pretty poor for her not to even call and acknowledge it.

and thirdly It must be so hard not having your mum there for events like these.

I would be disappointed too, just because it may not mean a lot to a 2 year old if their Nana rings on their birthday, it means something to you, especially after losing your own Mum!

I would be really upset about that. Especially considering your circumstances. It is really not that hard to make a call, and birthdays only come once a year.

I'd feel 'wronged' too - not for my sake, but for my child's sake.

Sorry haven't got much to offer.  Maybe next time give them a rather pointed hint that there's a birthday coming up and hopefully they will get the message.

That is sad and disappointing, some women think the world revolves around them, and have no interest in anyone but themselves.

Happy Birthday Eden I'm sure you're spoiling her Bizzy.

I also think its a generation thing........for some reason our parents are extremely selfish ......... its like they reach a certain age and go ...."you know what its all about ME now" I know we have to put ourselves first eventually at some point in our lives but i wouldnt do it to the point where it hurts other people.............man i so hope i dont become one of those people!!!!

My whole family is like that and i often wonder if i didnt make contact with them they would have no idea if i was alive or not............i still have not recieved even a card from any one of my family after the birth of my son in December........very sad

ETA - Happy Bday to your daughter for Friday anyway hun

I have a similar MIL, and what makes me feel better is knowing how doted the boys are, by my mum. So can definitely understand how you are feeling.

Hugs Deb

Happy belated 2nd birthday Eden!

I'm with you, my inlaws didn't ring or send a card for Daniels 2nd birthday (Jan) and it pissed me off then they sent me a sms for my bday(Feb 15) and to piss me off even more didn't ring or send a card for Ahslee's 1st bday on 21st Feb!!!! GAH!

How sweet of your dad :) even with a prompt.

Did she remember the boys birthdays? Its a bit sucky if she rang the others and forgot Edens. I have to ring Dad a few days beforehand to let him know the birthdays are coming up because it wouldn't occur to him to phone. Grandma's are meant to remember though.

I can't believe that a grandparent wouldn't acknowledge a grandchil's birthday! No wonder you are upset Bizzy! My parents don't celebrate birthdays, and yet they have always acknowledged ours and our childrens' by a phone call or whatever.

My mother wouldn't have a clue about birthdays coming up unless I remind her. I'm her birthday book.

In saying that, I think it's a bit rude of your MIL especially because I know you have had other trouble with her (I remember your thread at Christmas). Unfortunately at the end of the day, it's not just her that misses out, it's Eden as well This isn't much help, but I just want to give you big and then you can pass them on to Eden as well And happy belated birthday to her!!

I'd be pissed, and say so.
Politely though, nearly suckyuppy as such.

"I know you are an incredibly busy woman, and have other grandchildren, but now that Mum has passed away it's important to me that my kids get to have a really special relationship with you, as you are their surviving grandmother and I want them to cherish that".

Or something to that effect.

I agree that it sucks of your MIL to not acknowledge her granddaughters b'day . I would be tempted to mention it to her (in a 'nice' way of course).

We never hear from DH's father for any of our birthdays or Christmas but I try not to let it bother me anymore because it is really him who is missing out. The fact is my parents who live a plane ride away (& then a 2 hour car ride!) have seen my boys many more times that FIL has & he lives 3 hours drive away . Liam wouldn't know him from a bar of soap...

(didn't mean for this to turn into a rant!)

Happy birthday Eden

Yeah some grandmothers are like that, what has happened in our case is that our kids just don't see them. They even forget my birthday & the fact that I'm alive. IMO they are selfish & don't think of others let alone their poor grandies.

How sweet of your Dad

big hugs Deb!!! i totally know how you feel!! it was Bays birthday 2 weeks ago and the inlaws REALLY let him down.......and then of course it made myself AND Bay miss my mum because whenever that happened in the past it would be my mum/grandma to the rescue (you may have gathered that from my FB post!).

Bizzy that really sucks I don't blame you for feeling disappointed for Eden. And even more sucky that your MIL isn't stepping up as a grandparent now that your Mum isn't around

for you and Eden and belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes too
